Use of Modified Activated Carbon in Groundwater Remediation for Human Consumption

    No full text
This study aimed to produce activated carbon from desilicated rice husks using various carbonization and activation methods, including a tube furnace, muffle furnace, and artisanal pyrolysis. The resulting activated carbons were characterized for their adsorptive capacity through the determination of iodine number and methylene blue adsorption; these are key indicators of specific surface area and adsorbent quality. Advanced characterization techniques were employed, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed a highly porous and irregular surface structure, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), confirming the effective removal of impurities and optimization of the elemental composition. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrated favorable surface roughness for adsorption processes. Among the samples, CaDH162-CADH53 exhibited the highest performance, with an iodine number of 1094.8 mg/g and a yield of 93.5%, signifying a high adsorption capacity. The activation treatments with phosphoric acid and calcium carbonate significantly improved the porous structure, further enhancing the material’s adsorptive properties. In conclusion, the activated carbons produced in this study demonstrated optimal physicochemical properties for water purification and contaminant treatment applications. These findings highlight the potential of using agricultural waste, such as rice husk, as a sustainable and scalable alternative for industrial-scale activated carbon production

This project was supported by a 2023–2024 research fellowship from the Center for Intersectional Gender Studies & Research at Utah State University and a 2023 Creative Activity and Research Enhancement (C.A.R.E.) award from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences at Utah State University. In recent years, Spanish women writers and illustrators have produced noteworthy graphic narratives, some of which have been winners of the most prestigious cultural awards in Spain. Those volumes have focused on issues related to Spanish historical memory, narrative self-consciousness, feminism, sexual dissidence, and the politics of the female body. The present study examines the thematic and aesthetics impulses of Ilu Ros’s 2020 illustrated volume Cosas nuestras, a text that offers readers a reflection on 20th- and 21st-century Spanish history and (popular) culture through the memories and stories of the author’s grandmother. Through a non-traditional usage of illustrations and artistic sequences that question the generic boundaries of the comics medium, a self-conscious version of the author-illustrator gives a penetrating look at intergenerational cultures of resistance, the construction of identity, and the discussion of gender roles during the dictatorship and beyond. Utah State Universit

IV-Nlp: A Methodology to Understand the Behavior of DL Models and Its Application from a Causal Approach

    No full text
Integrating causal inference and estimation methods, especially in Natural Language Processsing (NLP), is essential to improve interpretability and robustness in deep learning (DL) models. The objectives are to present the IV-NLP methodology and its application. IV-NLP integrates two approaches. The first defines the process of the inference and estimation of the causal effect in original, predicted, and synthetic data. The second one includes a validation method of the results obtained by the selected Large- Language Model (LLM). IV-NLP proposes to use synthetic data in predictive tasks only if the causal effect pattern of the synthetic data is aligned with the causal effect pattern of the original data. DL models, the Instrumental Variable (IV) method, statistical methods, and GPT-3.5-turbo-0125 were used for its application, including an intervention method using a variation of the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technique. Our findings reveal notable discrepancies between the original and synthetic data, highlighting that the synthetic data do not fully capture the underlying causal effect patterns of the original data, evidencing homogeneity and low diversity in the synthetic data. Interestingly, when evaluating the causal effect in the predictions made by our three best DL models, it was verified that the model with the lowest accuracy (84.50%) was fully aligned with the overall causal effect pattern. These results demonstrate the potential of integrating DL and LLM models with causal inference methods

Doctors can sometimes override errors using their experience. However, certain factors such as scarcity of resources could lead to reliance on incorrect PCS recommendations, with consequences for patients. We conducted two experiments where participants interacted with a PCS that incorrectly classified fictitious patients as more or less sensitive to a treatment. Participants had the opportunity to administer the treatment on a series of patients, and use the feedback to learn that the PCS was wrong and all patients were equally sensitive. This was tested in contexts of abundant and scarce resources. Additionally, the treatment was effective in Experiment 1, but ineffective in Experiment 2. Results indicate that people generally trust the PCS recommendation, to some extent neglecting the information they collect during the task. This can lead to uneven resource allocation, especially in scarcity conditions, and incorrect perceptions of effectiveness, which in Experiment 2 implies believing that an ineffective treatment works. We preregistered the experiments, and all data and materials are public.

    No full text
When a person carries out instrumental activities of daily life, such as using public transport, he or she may be exposed to certain levels of stress. This stress can be caused by internal factors of the individual, such as age or previous experience in using means of transport, or by external factors such as accidents, traffic jams or due to features of the infrastructure provided by the transport consortium to its users. In order to ensure people’s health, it is essential to be aware of the causes that increase their stress level, so that it can be treated by a specialist. In the clinical field, tests are carried out to find out a person’s level of stress, while in the transport consortium, surveys are made to users without considering the stress produced by the use of their services as a section to be evaluated and leaving aside the fact that this is a problem that affects society today. For this reason, it becomes necessary to automate the process of collecting stress levels in the course of this type of instrumental activity of daily life. The aim of this final degree project is to research, analyse and develop an intercommunicated multisystem environment to monitor the stress level of a person in the course of a daily activity such as the use of public transport for commuting. The system involves a smartwatch, a smartphone and a multi-user web system, developing different applications and services. The stress assessment is achieved by obtaining, filtering and cleaning an analogue photoplethysmography (PPG) signal through a sensor located in the smartwatch, through which the characteristics for heart rate variation can be obtained and with which we can measure the stress level of a period of time. This system will be able to predict the stress level using Machine Learning techniques by having a trained model with a dataset related to a stress level experiment. The stress levels in conjunction with the labelling that the user can register on the watch during the activity help to understand the reasons why users suffer stress in the course of their daily activities. The implementation of this project involves explaining the aspects that cause stress to the user in the course of their daily life activities, giving them an explanation and being able to carry out a more reliable follow-up for the treatment of their stress. In the development of this project, several current technologies have been used for the devices and platforms that have been developed.Universidad de Granada. Recent research has highlighted the importance of the embryo secretome, the collection of molecules secreted by the embryo into the culture medium, in assessing embryo quality as a non-invasive preimplantation testing platform. The secretome plays a role in many essential processes, from gamete maturation to embryonic development. Molecules such as cell-free DNA, mitochondrial DNA and small non-coding RNA, including microRNA and PIWI-interacting RNA, together with the proteome, metabolome, microbiome and extracellular vesicles, have emerged as important players in predicting IVF outcomes. These molecules, present in the culture medium, have shown correlations with embryo viability, ploidy and implantation potential. Nevertheless, extensive validation in larger cohorts and an assessment of the applicability of the identified biomarkers in clinical settings is warranted. This article summarizes the molecular markers analysed in spent embryo culture medium and their potential for assessing embryo quality and predicting success in IVF outcomes.Slovak Research and Development Agency (APVV-22-0357)Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic (1/0747/24)MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 PID2021-12728OB-I00, ROSY CNS2022-135999FEDE

    No full text

    No full text
Franco dictatorship took a turn definitely in its agrarian policy with the adoption of the agrarian extension model and the consequent creation of the Agrarian Extension Service in 1955. In 1961 its first bulletin press saw the light, the Revista de Extensión Agraria (Agrarian Extension Journal), whose main purpose was to spread new technical and specialization procedures of this model, including Home Economics in order to train rural women. The main objective of this research is to describe how this publication portrayed women, both women who lived in countryside and professionals in rural training, from the first issue to 1970. Therefore, methodologically, we leverage the analysis of newspaper sources and a comprehensive review of normative frameworks to examine aspects such as sexual division of agrarian labour and the female archetype built and defined by the Agrarian Extension Service.
