Stress from Urban Sprawl on the Fauna and Flora of the Beirut Metropolitan Area
Lebanon is part of the hot spot of Mediterranean biodiversity and is well known for its large number of living species, particularly terrestrial ones. Uncontrolled urbanisation is the main cause of fragmentation of the habitats of these species. This research proposes GIS and landscape analysis as tools for understanding the process of fragmentation in the Metropolitan Area of Beyrouth over the last thirty years. Satellite images taken in 1985 and 2016 were processed by GIS and fragmentation indices were calculated using Fragstat4.2. Five sites were studied at a fine scale so as to identify the causes of this parcelling, which is on the increase. The results show increasing fragmentation of green spaces, considerable segregation between these patches and the breakdown of their connections. The aim of this study is to offer efficient mitigation methods for the protection of the remaining species
Integrated Management of Forest Insect Pests – Example Drawn from the Study of the Forest Cockchafer’s (Melolontha hippocastani Fabr. 1801) Ecological niche
During the last ten years, an increase in the damage attributable to the forest cockchafer (Melolontha hippo- castani) has been observed in various French forests. They consume the roots and kill seeded plants and seedlings. They are also suspected of being a supplementary factor in forest dieback. This is the context in which three studies were set up in the forests of the Northern Vosges in 2014, 2018 and 2019. This article sums up the results obtained. Sandy soils appear to be the most favourable for this species. The dense vege- tation of the low shrub stratum induces negative effects on egg-laying. In contrast, mixed stands (hardwoods- softwoods) with a predominance of oak are the most favourable in terms of frequency of egg-laying and numbers of grubs in the soil. Finally, opening up the canopy appears to play a positive role on the choice of egg-laying sites. At the end of the article, we discuss possible silvicultural rules that can be recommended
FZD5 (frizzled class receptor 5)
The Wnt signalling pathways are ways of signalling that transduce signals into cells through cell surface receptors; they are three different type of pathways and all of these are activated by binding a Wnt-protein ligand to a Frizzled family receptor. Frizzled is a family of G-protein coupled receptor proteins that works as receptor in the Wnt signalling pathway; when activated, Frizzled works activating the Dishevelled protein inside the cell, to transduce the signal. Frizzled-5 (FZD5) is part of this family and it is encoded by the FZD5 gene (located on the chr2, 2q33.3). Like all Frizzled members, FZD5 has an amino-terminal cysteine-rich domain (CRD) which allows the Wnt binding, seven-transmembrane domains and a cytoplasmic tail containing the PDZ domain binding motif at the carboxy-terminus. FZD5 shows an important role in development and it seems to be overexpressed in several types of cancer. FZD5 preferably binds WNT3A, WNT5A, WNT7A and WNT10B, activating both canonical and non-canonical pathways
i(22)(q10) in myeloid malignancies
Isochromosome i(22)(q10) is a rare but non-random karyotypic change in hematologic malignancies, often associated with complex karyotypes and with partial or complete loss of chromosomes 5 and/or 7
Observations sur quelques Actinoporelles (Chlorophyta, Polyphysaceae). Révision de la Collection Jacques Emberger. Part 1.
On the occasion of the inventory of the J. Emberger Collection, specimens from the "Lower Cretaceous" (Valanginian and Hauterivian) of Algeria, which are referable to the genus Actinoporella (Gümbel in Alth) and which were earlier identified to its type-species A. podolica (Alth) by Conrad et al., are re-examined. They correspond to two discrete species, one of which could be a junior synonym of A. podolica, a synonymy that remains pending because it would require a new sampling at the original locality in western Ukraine some 140 years after the original specimens, now lost, were collected. Regarding their age ascription, they are Tithonian and/or Berriasian in age, i.e., latest Jurassic (sensu Oppel) in age, not earliest Cretaceous. In addition to these two Actinoporellas, a third discrete species, initially described as Clypeina nigra (Conrad & Peybernès), but later referred to the genus Actinoporella, is revised. New data justify its re-ascription to the genus Bakalovaella Bucur. Finally, it is now confirmed that both the Polyphysaceae and the modern Dasycladaceae derive from the Diploporaceae either directly or indirectly through the ancestral Dasycladaceae.À l'occasion de l'inventaire de la Collectiony J. Emberger, des spécimens du "Crétacé inférieur" (Valanginien et Hauterivien) d'Algérie, qui se rapportent au genre Actinoporella (Gümbel in Alth) et qui avaient précédemment été attribués à son espèce type A. podolica (Alth) by Conrad et al., sont réexaminés.

The Hăgimaş Massif provides important data for reconstructing the geological evolution of the Transylvanian Carbonate Platform. This unit is present nowadays in the basement of the Transylvanian Depression and as large-scale olistoliths, which crop out in various locations in the Eastern Carpathians and Apuseni Mountains. They contain a large variety of microfacies as well as microfossil assemblages partly encompassing the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary. This study presents a detailed account of uppermost Jurassic-lowermost Cretaceous limestones from the Lapoş Valley (Hăghimaş Mountains) containing two distinct successions separated by a fault. The first succession contains platform margin and inner platform deposits (subtidal, intertidal) whereas the second one consists of inner platform deposits (shallow-subtidal to peritidal carbonates). The Upper Jurassic Stramberk-type facies is overlain by lower Berriasian regressive peritidal limestones. The upper Berriasian-? lower Valanginian consists mainly of inner platform deposits. They contain alternating, high and low-energy carbonates with rare calpionellids and calcispheres. The age assignment is based on a rich and diverse micropaleontological assemblage containing similar biota reported from other regions of the Tethysian Realm.
