Oaks As seen by painters
Oaks are often present in paintings. Dutch, English, French and Russian painters are the main contributors. Some remarkable trees have been painted, in particular in the Fontainebleau forest. Mediterranean and North American species also appear. Abiotic damages due to wind and thunder are depicted and occasionally wood decay too. Many activities are associated with oak stands such as wood gathering, religion, mythology, hunting, pastoralism, etc. Famous historical celebrities are recognizable like Saint Louis and Napoleon I. Other species sometimes associated with oak are beech, birch and chestnut. Most of the paintings are exhibited in British, Dutch, French, German and Russian museums while others belong to private collections
Interest of targeted genome modification techniques in terrestrial livestock species
Nowadays, new endonucleases make it possible to target precisely defined alterations in the genomic DNA of many species. With regard to livestock, the envisaged applications can be divided into three broad perspectives: (i) the projects with a basic research objective, when the mouse species cannot be used (horns development, seasonality, as examples) ; (ii) biomedical projects to create animal models of human pathologies when the mouse model is not adequate ; and (iii) agronomic projects aimed at providing an interesting character already described in another species or race, into a race or species not possessing such a character. These techniques represent a very effective alternative to introgression, while abolishing the species barrier. They may also be considered in support of genomic selection to eliminate advers
Plasmacytoma (Solitary bone plasmacytoma, extramedullary plasmacytoma)
Plasmacytoma is a rare hematological malignancy characterized by a discrete, solitary mass of neoplastic monoclonal plasma cells that occurs either (1) inside (solitary bone plasmacytoma - SBP) or outside (extramedullary plasmacytoma - EMP) the bone. Plasmacytoma mainly affects people in the 5th to 6th decade of their lives, and the incidence of the disease is higher in men than in women. It also affects African Americans more often than Caucasians, with the lowest incidence being reported in Asian populations. Unlike MM, plasmacytoma is not a systemic disease and lacks the characteristic CRAB abnormalities such as hypercalcemia, renal failure, anemia, and bone disease, excluding the plasmacytoma itself. The median time to progression of plasmacytoma to MM is 2-3 years, with progression more likely to occur in SBP than EMP. SBP commonly presents in the axial skeleton and mostly manifests as local pain, pathological fractures nerve compression, while EMP is usually seen in the head and neck and typically manifests as space-occupying lesions. Therapeutically, local therapy such as radiotherapy (RT) is the gold standard and is able to achieve long-term disease-free survival in approximately 30% and 65% of patients with SBP and EMP respectively. Surgery (and adjuvant RT), on the other hand, is mostly reserved for easily resectable plasmacytomas
Issues related to highly impacting endemic diseases in the south
The persistence of major transboundary and endemic animal diseases in southern countries (foot-andmouth
disease, peste des petits ruminants, rabies, etc.) underscores the National Veterinary Services’
failure to provide effective control methods and maintain a presence at local level where they are
most needed: among poor people and remote communities who depend mainly on livestock for subsistence.
Investing sustainably in the capacity of the Veterinary Services would help maintain global
health and food security, develop economies and improve the lives of some 1.3 billion people whose
livelihoods depend on animal health. The OIE works to promote the quality of Veterinary Services and
Aquatic Animal Health Services as a global public good, and deploys with its international and regional
partners a wide range of capacity-building activities for its member countries - especially those of the
South - for the control and eradication of major enzootic diseases in terrestrial and aquatic animals
Forest Dynamics and Big Game in a Hunting Estate, the National Estate of Chambord
This article uses the example of the National Estate of Chambord to explore the link between big-game ani- mals (wild ungulates) that are hunted and forest development. The dynamics of land uses that the estate has undergone throughout its history since the 16th century are retraced from spatialized sources. The exten- sion of the forest in this hunting estate is perceptible, indicating there is a positive link between big animals and forests. But the foresters consulted, including the estate warden, contradict this theory – hunting and forest management are incompatible. Nonetheless, since the estate became a national hunting preserve (1947), a genuine commitment to finding a balance between hunting and forest management has emerged. Indeed this even appears in the decree establishing the statute that sets out the missions of the estate (2005)
