Wild Boar and Government Policies – Hunting – Hunters – Symbolic Representations and Positioning

    No full text
The rapid expansion of wild boar populations has been highly detrimental to human activities. In the absence of predators, hunters are the only players to regulate the growing populations of this game. They are also alone in funding the statutory compensation for damage caused by wild boar to farming. At the same time, their numbers have been dwindling. The concepts and rules of hunting management, to which hunters have been subjected by the shared system of hunting administration between the state, the dedicated public body and the hunters’ federations over the last 40 years, is being called into question, and a return to approaches that are expected to optimize the effectiveness of hunting are favoured. Hunting cultures and symbolic repre- sentations both underlie and govern the hunting act. Government policies must take on board these founda- tional, essential dimensions, failing which their action is doomed to fail

Hedgehogs – A Forest Animal, But Perhaps One that Does Not or No Longer Lives There

Tradition associates the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) with trees, ever since Pliny described it as carrying apples on its prickles. Illustrations, figurines, tales, stories for children and the general public all present it as being a forest animal alongside the other inhabitants and traditional characteristics of forests. Research in ecology however shows that hedgehogs are not really forest dwellers and instead inhabit suburban gardens where they are able to feed and get shelter. French hedgehog preservationists explain this by the fact that the hedgehog’s original habitat, forests, has been destroyed and gardens have become its last place of refuge. We examine these points along with several contemporary tales and narratives that explain the hedgehog’s “exit” from forests, its propensity to live at close quarters with humans and use the changes in conditions and spaces to explore our relationship with nature and wildlife

The contribution of genetics to french shellfish farming

The most known and certainly the most important contribution of genetics to the oyster industry is the development of the triploid cupped oyster. Released for the first time in the 1980s, the triploid oyster has triplets of chromosomes instead of pairs. Currently, triploid oysters are obtained by crossing diploid and tetraploid oysters. These oysters are characterized by a near lack of milt in summer, which makes them generally popular with consumers, and by a faster growth, allowing a shorter production cycle. In parallel, the exploitation of natural resistance in the diversity of French oysters has been considered to improve the health of farmed populations which is a major challenge for the sustainability of aquaculture farms. Currently, the knowledge acquired and the tools developed make it possible to propose the first transfer of selection methods to the shellfish sector

    EBV positive DLBCL, NOS

Epstein-Barr virus positive DLBCL, NOS (EBV + DLBCL, NOS) occurs in apparently immunocompetent patients usually older than 50 years, which can also occur in younger patients and has a worse prognosis than EBV negative tumors. EBV + DLBCL, NOS has a broader morphological spectrum. Here the clinicopathological of EBV positive DLBCL will be discussed
