Equipping Teachers to Adapt: A Look into Teachers’ Professional Development Programs in Times of COVID-19 Pandemic
Get PDFThis study was conducted to determine public school teachers\u27 experiences and perspectives on different professional development programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also aimed at determining teachers’ motivation and barriers in attending TPDs. A multi-faceted survey questionnaire was given to 84 teacher-respondents representing 10 public schools in Tandubas District, Tawi-Tawi, the southernmost province of the Philippines. Prior to this, the questionnaire had undergone validation and reliability testing. Afterward, follow-up interviews were also made with ten selected teacher-respondents for an in-depth appreciation of the context of the data gathered. The result shows that teachers shifted to online courses and webinars during the pandemic. There is also a high frequency of utilization of informal professional development programs such as peer tutoring, coaching, and school-based Learning Action Cell (LAC) sessions. Other professional development programs such as formal degrees, reading of professional papers, professional networking, school and classroom observations, conducting education research, and attending conferences were least attended. In terms of topics, most teachers have attended training on students\u27 assessment, module development, school readiness, and safety. The study also found a Significant difference in the professional development experiences of teachers of different educational backgrounds and schools. This means that teachers with higher education tend to avail themselves more and school culture is one factor that encourages teachers to attend professional development programs. The result also shows that most of the teachers joined various TPDs because of the desire to improve their teaching, encouragement from school heads and peers, and usefulness for a job promotion. As to the barriers, most of the teachers mentioned financial constraints, time constraints, and poor internet connectivity as the top three reasons for not attending professional development programs in the past 12 months

Teachers in The New Normal: Challenges and Coping Mechanisms in Secondary Schools
Get PDFTeachers encountered numerous challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. Herewith, this study aimed to determine the challenges encountered by Filipino teachers in the new normal and their coping mechanisms. This study employed a qualitative inquiry to determine the challenges encountered and coping mechanisms employed by teachers amid modular instruction, involving 10 teachers from five secondary schools in the Philippines who participated voluntarily. Data were gathered through a written narrative from each participant and were analyzed thematically. Themed findings showed that these teachers are greatly challenged in terms of learning quality transfer, module distribution and retrieval, students’ difficulties in following instruction, power disruption, internet connection, and health risks posed by the pandemic. Nevertheless, these teachers dealt with these difficulties by employing their own coping techniques. Teaching can be challenging and frustrating, especially in these difficult times, but as these teachers demonstrated, everything is possible. Hence, educators must be ready for any situation that may arise. This situation is unlikely to get better anytime soon; instead, teachers will need to adjust to and accept this reality
Effectiveness of Information Communication Technology Integration on Teaching and Learning in Public Secondary Schools in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Case of Misungwi District
Get PDFThe main purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of ICT integration on effective teaching and learning process in public secondary schools found in Misungwi district. The study employed mixed research approach and the convergent parallel design for data collection. The study targeted 8087 respondents which comprised 7760 students, 24 school heads, 300 secondary school teachers and 3 district education officers and used 100 respondents as a sample size. The study employed simple random, stratified and purposive sampling to select respondents and the data collection tools were questionnaires, interview and observation. The study revealed that implementation of ICT has many influences on effective teaching and learning process such as it enhances the accessibility of teaching and learning materials, improve teachers and students knowledge and skills and makes lesson more effective, makes student-centered and self-directed, makes and creative good teaching and learning environment, and improve high thinking capacity for students and teachers. The study recommended that ICT infrastructures such as computers and other ICT resources should be adequately provided, and secondary schools leaders should establish income generating projects to increase sources of funds, in-service training to teachers must be provided, as well as special programs on ICT should be provided to boost teachers experience and familiarity on the use of ICT in teaching and learning process
The Position of the Municipal Public Administration in the Context of the Pandemic: An analysis from the experience of Juiz de Fora/MG
Get PDFThe COVID-19 pandemic demanded the adoption of swift measures by public managers to control the spread of the disease, as the virus had a high rate of transmissibility. Effective, non-pharmacological actions involving social distancing and isolation were widely applied. It was noticed that they provided opportunities for the collision between the rights to free enterprise and health, by restricting the full exercise of commercial activities. These, intrinsically, promote agglomeration of people. It is therefore necessary to assess whether the restrictive measures for the promotion of the rights to health and life were proportional to the preservation of the essential core of free enterprise. The context of the city of Juiz de Fora was chosen for analysis, between the months of February 2020 and December 2021. Data regarding the number of cases and deaths in the municipality on each day of publication of the municipal decrees that conveyed trade-restrictive measures. The research was supported by the theories of fundamental rights and legal arguments, for the rational (argumentative) and proportional investigation of the implementation of fundamental rights, in the face of conflicts in the concrete case. Still, the consequentialist theory was used to assess whether the examination of economic, social and political impacts prevailed. It started from the assumption that the rights inherent to the exercise of economic activity would prevail over the adoption of sanitary control measures. Through the empirical research methodology, combined with qualitative and inference strategies, it was found that the municipal administration of Juiz de Fora, proportionally, privileged the right to health, over free enterprise
