The Net Financial Position: Doctrine Compared
ABSTRACT: The net financial position of a firm represents an information item concerning the financial situation of a firm. This value provides valuable information about the financial balance or imbalance of firms. This figure is very useful on an informational level only if the reader knows its exact composition. Regarding this issue, doctrinaire positions vary and sometimes present very significant diseases. For such a posture to be used effectively to manage the enterprise and to understand its business situation, it is necessary to understand its content and composition. Imaginaries of enmity across the Taiwan Strait: The ‘cartoon war’ between Taipei Times and Global Times
This article reconsiders the Taiwan Strait conflict by encouraging a deeper exploration of
the construction of sociopolitical imaginaries of enmity through editorial political cartoons.
It does so, moreover, by emphasizing the need to attend to the triadic China–
Taiwan–US relations, rather than just focusing on cross-Strait developments. Through
this study, we focus on editorial political cartoons as visual schematic elements that
aid in describing and explaining overarching discursive practices. We show how the political
cartoons of China’s Global Times and Taiwan’s Taipei Times analysed in this article
reflect the evolving dynamics and contemporary tensions in China–Taiwan–US relations.
Furthermore, these cartoons underscore the importance of visual media in co-constructing
conceptions of ‘friends’ and ‘foes’ that ultimately influence those very dynamics and, at
least partially, aid in explaining those tensions. We reveal the existence of several parallels
between the political imaginaries represented by the cartoons of both outlets, especially
concerning the construction of an ‘external enemy’: the United States in Global
Times and China in Taipei Times. However, notable differences also emerge, including
the contrasting representation of the US role, as well as the predominant portrayal of
‘internal enemies’ and a higher degree of dehumanization in the Taiwanese outlet
Inference for big data assisted by small area methods: an application on sustainable development goals sensitivity of enterprises in Italy
In this study, we proposed a new method for estimating the sensitivity of enterprises in Italy to the United Nation’s sustainable development goals at the provincial level using web-scraping data (a nonprobability sample) because this value is not surveyed by the Italian National Institute of Statistics. The proposed method used a probability sample to reduce the selection bias of estimates obtained from the nonprobability sample in the context of small area estimation and integrated nonprobability and probability samples using a double robust estimator that combined (i) propensity weighting to improve the representativeness of the nonprobability sample and (ii) a statistical model to predict the units that were not in the nonprobability sample. A bootstrap procedure for estimating variance was also proposed. To validate the proposed method, a Monte Carlo simulation was performed. Results showed that the proposed method allowed the correction of bias from the nonprobability sample while maintaining a good level of estimate reliability
Philology, Observation, and Medicine in Daniel Furlanus' Commentary on Theophrastus' De ventis
Daniel Furlanus’ commentary (1605) on Theophrastus’ De ventis reflects the values and practices of late sixteenth-century Paduan and Cretan intellectuals. The commentary combined Aristotelian philosophy, philological analysis, concerns about medicine, and direct observations of Crete, mirroring the forms of antiquarianism and textual inquiry supported by Gian Vincenzo Pinelli and Cretan academicians. Furlanus attempted to reconcile De ventis to Aristotle’s Meteorologica, depicting it as a book of problems, which offered only probable solutions. In his view, whereas the Meteorologica provided general theories, De ventis, as well as the Aristotelian Problemata 26, attempted to give causal explanations for the properties of individual winds. His observations of winds on Crete were employed to confirm Theophrastean and Hippocratic theories about the characteristics of winds and their relation to specific locations. Moreover, observations taken from Crete supported Theophrastus’ ideas about climate change, as Furlanus used them to build a narrative of the decline of Greek lands caused by natural catastrophes, a decline only recently reversed by Crete’s Venetian rulers
"Face-work night": Representations of Self and Other(s) in the Presidential Concession Speech
In the framework of the correspondences between pragmatics and rhetoric, this paper sets out to explore the notion of ethos beyond its rhetorical function, from a linguistic and pragmatic viewpoint, comparing it to the pragmatic concept of face (section 2). To investigate the ubiquitous presence of ethos in
discourse and its connections with pragmatic facework within actual cultural constraints, the analysis will focus on a genre typical of political communication in the US, the Concession Speech (cs), which occurs in a strongly institutionalized
context and displays evident ritual components (section 3). As a case study, the Concession Speech by John McCain will be analyzed, pointing to the processes of image-construction involving, beside the Self, both the Audience (the supporters) and the Enemy (the winning adversary and his supporters),
and comparing them with the strategies adopted in the corresponding Victory Speech (vs) by Barak Obama (section 4). In the conclusions (section 5), the recurring patterns of the genre will be summarized and discussed, with a view
to emphasizing the role of the ethotic component as the rhetoric counterpart of pragmatic facework
Topic-sensitivity and the hyperintensionality of knowledge
It is natural to assume that knowledge, like belief, creates a hyperintensional context, that is, that knowledge ascriptions do not allow for substitution of necessarily equivalent prejacents salva veritate. There exist a variety of different proposals for modelling the phenomenon. In the last years, the topic-sensitive approach to the hyperintensionality of knowledge has gained considerable traction. It promises to provide a natural account of why knowledge fails to be closed under necessary equivalence in terms of differences in subject matter. Here, we argue that the topic-sensitive approach, as recently put forward by Franz Berto, Peter Hawke, Aybüke Özgün, and others, faces formidable problems. The root of these problems lies in the approach's prediction that a mere grasp of subject matter may help to provide insights into necessary implications that it would seem to require more substantive epistemic work to gain
Efficiency of Danish Museums and State Funding Allocation
The purpose of this paper is to measure the efficiency of Danish state recognized museums and to propose an allocation model for state funding to the museums based on the results of such analysis. We draw on a quantitative model which provides a tool that measures the museums performance with a balanced approach which is able to take into consideration the efficiency of different aspects of the museum activities. We apply a two-stage DEA-BSC approach. In the first stage we set a Balanced Scorecard (BSC) scheme specifically devised for the situation of the Danish museums, then we define a DEA model for each BSC perspective and compute the DEA efficiency score for every perspective. In the second stage we define a further DEA model which combines the efficiency scores of the various BSC perspectives into an overall performance indicator. Furthermore, the two-stage model is used to propose a brand-new allocation model for state funding to the museums to guide the decision on the resources to be allocated to each of them. The dataset used for the analyses are the official data for museums collected and made available by the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces. The results a highly relevant in the actual political context in Denmark, and it has general interest in understanding the efficiency of museums
Tectonic implications of raised Quaternary relative sea‐level indicators along the NE border of the Campania Plain (southern Italy)
Tectonically raised paleoshorelines have been recently identified along the southern
fault scarps of the Mt. Fellino and Roccarainola horst blocks, which are part of the
northeastern border of the Campania Plain coastal basin (southern Apennines, Italy).
Such horst blocks are bounded to the south by the Polvica Fault, a roughly E-W
trending normal fault. The sequence of uplifted paleoshorelines has been studied in
detail by integrating geomorphological, structural and stratigraphical analyses to
assess the Quaternary uplift of the Mt. Fellino and Roccarainola horst blocks. Yet,
the staircase of paleoshorelines is still not chronologically well constrained.
Aimed at constraining the uplift history of Mt. Fellino and Roccarainola horst blocks
and the rate of activity of the Polvica fault, in this study, we integrate former knowledge
on paleoshorelines with a geomorphological analysis to map erosional terraces,
that we interpret as remnants of shore platforms. We apply the synchronous correlation
method, driven by new and a former 230Th/234U dating of calcite veins cutting
marine sands, to infer the age of the paleoshorelines and terraces. Based on the synchronous
correlation, the mapped paleoshorelines and terraces are correlated with
sea-level peaks of the late Early to Late Pleistocene. In particular, the paleoshorelines
along the Mt. Fellino ridge are correlated with the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7e and
9c or 11, while the oldest terrace is correlated with the sea-level peak of 980 ka.
Using inferred paleoshorelines ages, we estimate the uplift rate of the Polvica Fault
footwall. The uplift rate varies from c. 0.2 mm/yr close to the western fault tip up to
c. 0.5–0.6 mm/yr in the East, in the Roccarainola block. We combine surface evidence
with subsurface data from a shallow well to constrain the vertical throw of the
Polvica Fault. A mean fault throw rate of c. 0.4 mm/yr in the last c. 1 Ma is estimated
for the central part of the PF. Assuming that the Polvica Fault is still active, we estimate
the maximum expected earthquake by means of empirical relationship and
obtain a Mw 6.2 value and recurrence interval value of c. 1,200 yr. Historical seismicity
activity of the PF has not been acknowledged to date. However, our results
raise the crucial question of an in-depth assessment of the seismic hazard for the
densely populated Campania Plain
