Fanyi hao Zhongguo gushi: Teoria e pratica della traduzione come soft power
No full textThis paper examines Chinese translation theory and practice, as well as the discourse on translation that has emerged in recent decades as a powerful tool of soft power. By analyzing the dominant narratives surrounding translation, produced by both Chinese intellectuals and politicians, I argue that the national policy of promoting and exporting Chinese literature in recent years stems from the intersection of several factors. These include Chinese academics' concerns about the international recognition and prestige of Chinese culture, their desire to engage in cross-cultural dialogue through translation, and the political ambition to exercise more effective soft power both domestically and internationally. These dynamics are further driven by China's growing publishing industry and its pursuit of profits on a global scale
Pricing climate transition risk: Evidence from European corporate CDS
Get PDFThe European low-carbon transition towards net-zero emissions by 2050 is gaining momentum. This study analyzes a major European firm’s climate-related transition indicators and their impact on CDS-implied credit risk across different time horizons. Results reveal market pricing of transition risk across all tenors, especially since the 2015 Paris Agreement. Carbon-intensive sectors like Electricity, Gas, and Mining face heightened transition risk pricing. Interestingly, the market may undervalue a company’s transition risk management efforts and participation in the EU ETS, possibly due to market inefficiencies. Predicting allowance prices’ impact on financial performance in the EU ETS market is notably challenging due to unique supply–demand dynamics

The paper investigates the typology of housing, the social position of owners and lodgers, access to water infrastructures, and the practice of subleasing. The peculiar relationship between the scarcity of available space and increasing demographic pressure is shown to be a critical element destined to worsen housing conditions
“This apology doesn't seem sincere at all” (Meta)discourses around Will Smith's apology in English and Japanese YouTube comments
Get PDFThis study investigates cultural variation in the reception and evaluation of the same apology event. More specifically, it looks at how Will Smith's apology for slapping Chris Rock has been metadiscursively constructed in two sets of YouTube comments (310,998 tokens): the English comments to the original apology video and the Japanese comments to a second video, which is addressed to a Japanese audience and reports and translates the apology. Corpus(-assisted) methods are employed to examine the Meta-Illocutionary Expressions (MIEs) apolog∗ and 謝罪 shazai ‘apology’/謝∗ ayama∗ ‘apologise’ in context and, more specifically: (1) their function; (2) the underlying evaluations they convey; and (3) the moral orders they appeal to. The reading of concordances showed that the MIEs are used to problematise or endorse the apology and that negative evaluations of Smith and his apology are more prominent in English. A closer look at the collocates revealed that apolog∗ typically co-occurs with sincere to challenge the sincerity of the act. Conversely, shazai/ayama∗ is associated with お互いに (o-)tagai (ni) ‘reciprocal(ly)’ to indicate that a reciprocal apology from Rock would be appropriate. This suggests that culture-specific moral orders play a role in the negotiation of what is (im)polite

No full textAvventuriero, ciarlatano, truffatore, galantuomo, seduttore... sono innumerevoli le definizioni per Giacomo Casanova. Dopo la pubblicazione postuma delle sue memorie, nel 1822, il mito ne ha oscurato la figura storica e lo ha trasformato in un personaggio in cui si è riflessa la società dell’Ottocento e del Novecento, in un’icona sempre più al centro delle moderne strategie commerciali. Il volume ripercorre le fasi di questa trasfigurazione attraverso le parole che nel corso del tempo sono state utilizzate per designare il veneziano: dal libertino frutto delle manipolazioni e delle alterazioni delle memorie al ribelle prediletto dagli anarchici e dai socialisti nell’Ottocento, dal seduttore mitizzato dai futuristi all’imputato nei processi per oltraggio al pudore, fino al mattatore, al Don Giovanni e alla spia tanto amati dal cinema del Novecento

No full textThis paper examines the literary work of Colombian poet, sociologist, and ethnographer Estefanía Ciro Rodríguez, focusing on her poetry collection Artefactos Explosivos Inmateriales (2018). Through poetry, she transforms her ethnographic research into narratives of cocaleros—coca field workers—in the Caquetá region. A key aspect of her work is the complex relationship between the coca leaf and farmers, especially women, within the policies implementing the 2016 peace agreements between President Santos and the FARC-EP. The study highlights how poetry can enrich ethnographic discourse and reveal the agency of those subjects who struggle for balancing their livelihood with the stigma of "illegality" tied to coca cultivation
Understanding households’ bank bond holdings
Get PDFUsing unique data on Italian households from 2011 to 2015, we examine how investor demand-side
and bank supply-side characteristics relate to households’ holdings of bonds issued by their own bank.
Households with a higher concentration of own bank bonds tend to have a lower education level, a
shorter investment horizon, and less wealth. Controlling for investment and investor attributes, households
exhibit high bank bond concentration when the issuing bank has high funding needs, low profitability,
or a high branch market share. Furthermore, we show that a buy-and-hold strategy on bank
bonds yields lower returns than one on government bonds over the same period. These findings offer
insights into retail bond issuance, an important source of funding for banks in times of market stress
