Exploring dialogism in discourse. Doxa, interdiscourse, dialogic inversion and environmental issues
Get PDFThe notion of dialogism has been widely explored in both discourse and argumentation studies. Through a combination of these two approaches, dialogism reveals its crucial role as a strategy functional to the positioning of the arguer, determined in contrast with the adversary. The paper investigates this aspect of dialogism, starting from the assumption that both dialogicity and argumentation are pervasive in discourse, and exploring the
notion of interdiscourse. The discussion then focuses on polemic discourse, characterized by the impossibility of constructing a common ground, and on dialogic inversion as a strategy entailing the reinterpretation in one’s own terms of concepts and values typical of the adversary. The theoretical
points are applied to the analysis of two different examples concerning typical issues of environmental discourse: the formula sustainable development, which belongs to the core lexicon of environmental policies and has been subject to different interpretations and evaluations; the neologism warmist, coined in opposition to denialist and conveying a context of contraposition between two incompatible viewpoints
GraFix: A Graph Transformer with Fixed Attention Based on the WL Kernel
No full textIn this paper we introduce GraFix, a novel graph transformer with fixed structural attention. Inspired by recent works 1) harnessing the link between (graph) kernels and the attention mechanism of transformers and 2) favouring simple fixed (non-learnable) attentive patterns over the standard attention mechanism, we propose to use graph kernels, specifically the WL kernel, to replace the learnable attention mechanism of a transformer with a fixed one capturing the structural similarity between substructures in the input graphs. The resulting graph transformer showcases an excellent performance on standard graph classification benchmarks, performing on-par with and in some instances outperforming a wide variety of alternative graph neural network and graph transformer-based approaches while at the same time benefiting from a reduced number of learnable parameters and learning runtime

No full textThis book takes a look at the affordances of engaging second/foreign language students in educational projects that bridge the gap between the classroom and the museum. Studies on language learning and teaching beyond the classroom have shown that students learn in different settings and through different types of activities and that their learning is influenced by the intersection of different dimensions. Drawing on both language and museum learning and teaching research, this book discusses the aspects that make the museum an ideal language learning setting and then outlines evidence-based pedagogical guidelines to design effective learning experiences for language learners across the classroom and the museum. It will be of interest to graduate students, language teachers, teacher trainers, museum educators, and researchers in fields including Educational Linguistics, Anthropological Linguistics, and Museum Studies (Education)
Estimating future heat-related and cold-related mortality under climate change, demographic and adaptation scenarios in 854 European cities
Get PDFPrevious health impact assessments of temperature-related mortality in Europe indicated that the mortality burden attributable to cold is much larger than for heat. Questions remain as to whether climate change can result in a net decrease in temperature-related mortality. In this study, we estimated how climate change could affect future heat-related and cold-related mortality in 854 European urban areas, under several climate, demographic and adaptation scenarios. We showed that, with no adaptation to heat, the increase in heat-related deaths consistently exceeds any decrease in cold-related deaths across all considered scenarios in Europe. Under the lowest mitigation and adaptation scenario (SSP3-7.0), we estimate a net death burden due to climate change increasing by 49.9% and cumulating 2,345,410 (95% confidence interval = 327,603 to 4,775,853) climate change-related deaths between 2015 and 2099. This net effect would remain positive even under high adaptation scenarios, whereby a risk attenuation of 50% is still insufficient to reverse the trend under SSP3-7.0. Regional differences suggest a slight net decrease of death rates in Northern European countries but high vulnerability of the Mediterranean region and Eastern Europe areas. Unless strong mitigation and adaptation measures are implemented, most European cities should experience an increase of their temperature-related mortality burden
Catalysts of circular transformation: unveiling behavioural intention and absorptive capacity in European hotels
No full textThe EU has been taking various steps to encourage circular economy implementation. Hotels, like all other sector enterprises, are expected to adopt circular practices. However, they are facing difficulty in adopting circular practices while the academic discussion on how they can do so is still in its infancy. This study assesses whether the nexus of the behavioural intention of administrators and the absorptive capacity of hotels leads to circular practices adoption. To test the hypotheses drawn from the theories of planned behaviour and organisational learning, this study analyses a sample of 226 administrators from European hotels using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The analysis reveals that the attitude and perceived behavioural control of administrators predominantly shape their behavioural intention, which in turn along with the absorptive capacity influences circular practices adoption. This study thus concludes that if hotels strengthen their absorptive capacity, then they may succeed in adopting circular practices. To achieve this, hotels should prioritise sustainability-focused training and cultivate partnerships for practical knowledge exchange on circular practices. For broader adoption, practitioners and policymakers can accelerate progress by offering targeted incentives and creating sector-specific guidelines that make circular economy initiatives accessible and actionable for hotels of all sizes
Cultural entrepreneurship and field dynamics: Narrative strategies for distinctive identities in unsettled fields.
No full textThis paper analyzes how cultural entrepreneurs populating an unsettled organizational field may construct their identities as the field evolves. While extant studies in cultural entrepreneurship have recognized the importance of context, they mostly operationalize it as a stable source of standards. By adopting a field perspective, the present study instead offers a dynamic contextualization of cultural entrepreneurship. Applying computational and interpretative text-analytical methods to the empirical setting of the emerging Italian drone field, the results indicate that cultural entrepreneurs may follow different strategies to construct a distinctive identity narrative under specific field-formation processes. The paper contributes to the literature by providing a model of cultural entrepreneurship under field-level change conditions. This model, by spotlighting unsettled fields’ evolving semantic dimensions, demonstrates how cultural entrepreneurs may be able to construct distinctive identities even when their field’s meaning system is far from stable, and the criteria to evaluate a venture’s legitimacy are still being developed
