Aristocratic land ownership. Land ownership between the centre and the hinterland as represented in the language of notarial deeds.
The system of land ownership between the 9th and 10th centuries was significantly influenced by a series of environmental and cultural factors mediated by the customs of those notaries tasked with certifying and registering property deeds. The language used in notarial deeds to describe real estate in the areas of Venice and Milan will be analysed here in order to reconstruct the forms that the organisation of landed property took, together with the agrarian landscape of the time, and to ascertain what resources were actually available and utilised during that historical period. In doing so, evidence will be offered of the many similarities between properties, deriving from the notaries' ability to define land organisation in a similar manner through their use of a standardised language of property ownership
A different view of innovation and international knowledge exchange from classroom notes: the University of Edinburgh, 1604-1650
Many 17th-century student lecture notes survive from one of Europe's emerging educational centres, the University of Edinburgh. Particularly interesting are the early to mid-17th-century notes, whose content is scholastic in form, with lecturers reading passages from an authority text. The notes, however, contain a remarkably detailed account of the contemporary collapse of Aristotelian cosmology. A contemporary manuscript of teaching notes for Edinburgh's lecturers also survives, containing lists of books and manuscripts to be consulted by the students. These teaching notes were produced by a group of itinerant scholars returning to Edinburgh from centres across Europe. This chapter discusses the student notes as products of the manuscript and the cosmopolitan scholarly communities, stretching from Padua to Paris. These fascinating handwritten notes reveal how students were constantly updated on the latest developments in 17th-century scientific culture
“Sostituzioni”, apparizioni e barene. La Land art alla Biennale di Venezia
How to exhibit Land Art at the Venice Biennale: by reconstructing worlds or renouncing them, depending on how curatorial practices collide with the narratives of art historians versus militant curators. The Gardens of Castello, main site of the Biennale, are not an easy platform for land experiments, but reveal experiences rendered by geological cracks, nebulous atmospheres, green presences, chthonic installations. This intervention recounts Germano Celant’s failures, Renato Barilli’s visionariess, the desire for an impossible task and how the appearance of a Land Art piece can cost 25,000 dollars in 1970. And if unexpected ‘substitutions’ in a landscape can be works of art, Land Art can be made by water, a matter that from the Grand Canal embraces the sandbanks, spaces where anything can happen

Engineered silica NPs to hold and release the antimicrobial product Biotin T ®
While the preservation of culturally significant materials is increasingly recognized as important within the scientific community, it remains closely tied to traditional practices and the empiric knowledge of small handicraft companies. These procedures are usually highly effective, but, especially when dealing with biological degradation phenomena, they are often not updated to the latest scientific innovations and hence do not always consider the impact of their use on the environment. MCM-41 silica-based nanoparticles were employed as nanocontainers to encapsulate and later release the antimicrobial agent Biotin T ®. Specifically, the silica nanoparticles were modified with sulphonic groups to functionalize the silica structure and its interaction with the antimicrobial compound, thereby aiming to regulate its release. Microbiological tests were conducted to determine Biotin T ® antimicrobial activity at low concentrations. The nanomaterials were characterized by N2 physisorption, XRD, TPO, TG/TDA, Raman IR/ATR spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, and HR-TEM, whereas Biotin T ® release was studied through UV spectroscopy. The functionalized silica nanoparticle-based matrix can encapsulate and gradually release the commercial biocidal. Two of the matrices, MCM-41 and MCM-SO3H, exhibited different properties after functionalization, with both maintaining the original structure but leading to a higher interaction with the antimicrobial product
Renewable Energy, Resilience, Digitalization, and Industrial Policies in Seaborne Transport
This paper delves into sustainability and energy policies influencing the governance and dynamics of global maritime trade. Resilience and sustainability are also discussed, along with the obstacles encountered and strategies to overcome them. The analysis underscores the importance of developing long-term strategies and participatory processes, focusing on government involvement in promoting structural changes towards a more sustainable seaborne transport system. Part of our research is also dedicated to outlining the different factors influencing this industry among different continents, highlighting the need for increasingly unified governance frameworks internationally. By incorporating resilience theory and new technologies, with a high potential in terms of GHG emission reduction, governments and firms can better engage stakeholders, ensure business resilience, and address climate change risks. This study concludes that ports have significant power in driving structural change, and modernization across various areas—such as digitalization, energy policies, safety, green fuels, environmental sustainability, and effective coordination—is essential for their continued development
Padri latini a Bisanzio
