VISIONI SINTETICHE E DIGITALI. VENEZIA E SUOI PANORAMI DALL’ARCHIVIO ALLO SPAZIO URBANO

    Get PDF
The paper explores the role of the VR360 technique in presenting and offering a new reading of historical documents, starting with an archival panoramic photograph of Venice from the XX century. The analysis offers a brief genealogy of ‘-oramas’, and in particular the special relationship between Venice and the theme of the city's image and its public use, from the Diorama, to the Periphoto, to VR360. This language rooted in the 19th century panorama, could be a valid narrative approach for both digital art history and digital public history research methodologies

Multiple-Try Simulated Annealing for Constrained Optimization

    Get PDF
In the large class of robust optimization methods, stochastic programming and stochastic optimization gained popularity thanks to the theoretical guarantees of the algorithms. This paper focuses on simulated annealing, a stochastic-based algorithm for numerical optimization problems with a good global exploration ability. However, the global optimum values cannot always be guaranteed without a slowly decreasing cooling schedule. This ultimately negatively impacts the convergence speed of the algorithm. This deficiency is overcome in this study by a new stochastic optimization algorithm built on generalized Metropolis and simulated annealing (SA) algorithms. The ergodicity of the proposed constrained multiple-try Metropolis SA is proved. Several constrained optimization benchmarks and challenging real-world high-dimensional problems from finance were considered for assessing the performance of the proposed algorithm

Aqueous‐Phase Surface Amidation of TEMPO‐CNF Films for Improved Adsorption of Organic Pollutants in Water

    No full text
Wastewater treatment remains a critical global issue due to the release of hazardous chemicals that pose environmental and health risks. This study presents the first preparation of highly efficient and recyclable TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TEMPO-CNF) films, surface-grafted through a novel and straightforward method for water decontamination. The films are modified via immersion in an aqueous solution of benzylamine and DMTMM, yielding TEMPO-CNF-g-BnNH2 materials. Characterization by atomic force microscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier trasnsform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and water-resistance testing confirmed successful grafting. This functionalization enhanced material properties, improving water stability by 81% and reducing water uptake by 88%. Contact angle measurements, surface plasmon resonance analysis, and kinetic and thermodynamic studies indicate that the introduction of benzylamine modifies surface hydrophobicity and increases chemical affinity with organic pollutants. While π–π interactions may play a role, especially with aromatic contaminants, the sorption behavior is overall influenced by a combination of hydrophobic effects and increased molecular similarity with the target molecules. The grafted films demonstrated high adsorption capacities for methylene blue and chlorhexidine (163.9 and 217.4 mg g−1, respectively), along with excellent reusability and washability. Biodegradability tests confirmed complete degradation within 90 days. This work offers a sustainable strategy for producing advanced cellulose-based adsorbents for efficient and ecofriendly wastewater treatment

    Theran Epigraphic Rubbings Archive

ThERA (Theran Epigraphic Rubbings Archive) is an open-access digital archive collecting rubbings of Greek inscriptions carved on the rocks of the so-called area of the “Agora of the Gods,” on the island of Santorini (ancient Thera), dating to the Archaic and Classical periods (8th–5th century BCE) and now severely eroded. ThERA combines high-resolution gigapixel imaging of the rubbings with TEI-EpiDoc encoding of each inscription and geolocation on a dynamic map, enabling scholars and interested users to read, zoom, and contextualize texts and drawings in detail. By offering a sustainable and interoperable digital environment, ThERA safeguards a vulnerable heritage and enhances research and public understanding of early Greek literacy

Per una pedagogia dell’ageing. Tracce per il futuro

    Get PDF
This volume presents the final reflections on a collective interdisciplinary and collaborative project aimed at exploring educational and training practices for active ageing. The voices gathered together, which include researchers, professionals, practitioners, and volunteers, convey a broad and shared ambition for participation, attentive listening, and the construction of meaning. The perspective discussed in this volume advocates for the development of a Pedagogy of ageing, grounded in intergenerational educational processes, circular learning environments, and a shared culture of ageing. It highlights the human dimension of longevity, while promoting co-designed participatory practices and evaluating good practices within local communities as ongoing process. The volume ends with a set of strategic proposals, envisioning a society capable of interweaving care, lifelong learning, and hope across all stages of life, supported by policies that recognize the educational and formative value of these actions

Giovanni Rossi e Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli/Giovanni XXIII: un’amicizia sacerdotale al servizio dell'annuncio del Vangelo

    No full text

Consuming modernity in Kenya: LPG bottles and the local reworking of global ideas of “clean” and “modern” energy

    Get PDF
This article explores how the global idea of “clean” and “modern” energy promoted by Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) is reinterpreted in Langas, a Kenyan informal settlement shaped by internal migration and postcolonial legacies. The Kenyan government embraced SDG7’s vision, promoting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bottles as a “clean” and “modern” energy solution to displace polluting fuels like firewood, charcoal and kerosene. However, ethnographic fieldwork in Langas reveals that residents consume LPG bottles not solely for their practical use, but as aspirational objects signifying social distinction and access to Western lifestyles. Their material features – colour, shine and shape – carry symbolic weight, expressing a local sense of “modernity” that diverges from that of global energy narratives. By examining the meanings ascribed to LPG bottles in Langas, this article contributes to debates on the consumption of ideas in postcolonial contexts, highlighting the limits of universalist approaches to energy transition projects
