    In the postwar period, the question of the forms and limits of State intervention in the economy aroused lively discussions in Italy and drew the attention also of members of the Society of Jesus. The paper examines the divergent views expressed in this regard by the Jesuit journals «La Civiltà Cattolica» and «Aggiornamenti Sociali»: although public initiative was admitted by both, it was regarded with strong diffidence in the Roman periodical, while it was judged more positively by the Milanese one. A common reference point was the principle of subsidiarity: this, however, was not interpreted in the same way. The dualism regarding the economic sphere was linked to different evaluations of the political developments in the country, and especially of the possibility of dialogue with the Socialists: thus, in the last years of Pius XII's pontificate, the Jesuit “laboratory” ended up representing and supporting heterogeneous positions within Italian Catholicism

    Reconstruction of mass balance and firn stratigraphy during the 1996–2011 warm period at high altitude on Mount Ortles, Eastern Alps: a comparison of modelled and ice core results

    Paleoclimatic glacial archives in low-latitude mountain regions are increasingly affected by melt, which leads to heavy percolation and can remove snow and firn accumulated across months, seasons, or even years. Proxy system models, used for improved interpretation of glacial proxies and paleoclimatic reconstructions, generally do not account for melt because they are optimized for sites where snow layer removal by melting is negligible. In this paper, we present a mass balance model applied to the Mt Ortles drilling site, at 3859 m a.s.l. in the Eastern Italian Alps, with the aim of building a pseudo-proxy of atmospheric conditions during the formation of snow layers that survived to ablation. This pseudo-proxy is useful for improved dating and environmental interpretation of firn layers (< 15 m depth), affected by significant melt in the period 1996–2011, which includes the extremely warm summer of 2003. Here we show that the model significantly improves the interpretation of the firn stratigraphy. This is fundamental for detecting melted layers and for refining the dating of the core based on traditional annual layer counting of stable isotope and pollen seasonal oscillations

    The social genres of comics represent a novel epistemological and meth-odological configuration within the field of social sciences, one that goesbeyond a mere medial shift and instead necessitates a redefinition of theboundaries of scientific knowledge, its form, its publics, and its purposes.The convergence between visual narrative and scientific representation,between panel and theory, between drawing and method, opens anunprecedented space of hybridity and experimentation that challengesboth canonical research paradigms and entrenched hierarchies betweenexpert knowledge and lived experience (Della Puppa & Moretti, 2024;Grüning & Scavarda, 2025). Addressing the impact and innovation ofcomics within social sciences does not simply mean highlighting the medi-um’s potential for dissemination or its role in making complex conceptsmore accessible. Rather, its impact and innovation lie in the comic’s capac-ity to intervene in knowledge production processes, to redefine the coordinates of scientific subjectivity, and to expand the epistemic scope of social inquiry. Comics, thus, are not merely a communication medium, but a cognitive and political device that acts upon both the object and the subject of research (Della Puppa & Moretti, 2024; Moretti, 2023). What renders comics socially and scientifically innovative is their inherently relational, dialogical, and performative nature

    PCB-oxidizing bacteria in Arctic and Antarctic lakes: insights into bioremediation potential in polar ecosystems

    Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are long-lasting organic pollutants commonly found in polar regions due to their ability to be transported and deposited over long distances in the atmosphere. This study examined the levels of PCB contamination in water and sediment samples taken from Arctic lakes (Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard) and Antarctic lakes (Livingston Island and Deception Island) and evaluated the biodegradation capabilities of local cold-adapted bacteria. Our analyses highlighted that Antarctic lakes had higher PCB concentrations than Arctic lakes, and the sediments acted as sinks for these pollutants. Variability between lakes was also observed, with Deception Island exhibiting higher PCB levels, which may be attributed to local environmental and volcanic influences. Several bacterial strains able to grow with PCBs as the sole carbon and energy source were isolated and identified from sediment samples, primarily belonging to the genus Pseudomonas. Arctic isolates exhibited higher biodegradation efficiency, particularly those possessing the bphA gene, which plays a key role in the initial steps of PCB degradation. These preliminary results underscore the essential role of polar lakes as both reservoirs and key areas for PCB degradation, while also highlighting the potential of cold-adapted bacteria for bioremediation in extreme environments

    Tele-abortion: between privacy and women’s reproductive rights

    Women’s reproductive health in general and the right to abortion in particu-lar have been targeted and challenged in recent years world-wide in a number of countries: to name a few, first the almost entire ban on abortion in Poland 2020, then the overthrow of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of the USA in 2022. Although in international law a right to abortion has not been expressly codified in any international binding convention, regional courts have tried to recognise the existence of such right as a corollary to other human rights such as the right to privacy and the right to be free from inhuman or degrading treat-ment. To overcome such challenges, in some US States and in South America, a practice has emerged drawing from the most recent developments in e-health, which is that of tele-abortion, which would allow women in need of ending an unwanted pregnancy to access the service remotely, through the abortion pill and with the supervision of a doctor through a series of online meetings. Nonetheless, resorting to such method raises a number of legal issues, which this paper aims at analysing and examine in depth from an international law perspective. Among the issues addressed by this paper, is whether tele-abortion can be considered as a means to ensure women’s reproductive rights, which will be approached through an intersectional lens, as well as the close connection between tele-abortion and women’s right to privacy, focusing on the safeguard-ing of the collection and storage of data in case of tele-abortion. In this regard, the paper will highlight the legal vacuum in international law in terms of the developments of e-health particularly, and AI in general, fields in which the international legal framework is still lagging behind

    A gradient-boosted tree framework to model the ice thickness of the world's glaciers (IceBoost v1.1)

    Knowledge of glacier ice volumes is crucial for constraining future sea level potential, evaluating freshwater resources, and assessing impacts on societies, from regional to global. Motivated by the disparity in existing ice volume estimates, we present IceBoost, a global machine learning framework trained to predict ice thickness at arbitrary coordinates, thereby enabling the generation of spatially distributed thickness maps for individual glaciers. IceBoost is an ensemble of two gradient-boosted trees trained with 3.7 million globally available ice thickness measurements and an array of 39 numerical features. The model error is similar to those of existing models outside polar regions and is up to 30 %-40 % lower at high latitudes. Providing supervision by exposing the model to available glacier thickness measurements reduces the error by a factor of up to 2 to 3. A feature-ranking analysis reveals that geodetic data are the most informative variables, while ice velocity can improve the model performance by 6 % at high latitudes. A major feature of IceBoost is a capability to generalize outside the training domain, i.e. producing meaningful ice thickness maps in all regions of the world, including on the ice sheet peripheries
