Nel segno del Tripartito. Karl Haushofer in Italia tra geopolitica e yamatologia
No full textLa figura di Karl Haushofer (1869-1946) è nota soprattutto per le sue idee geopolitiche – la cui effettiva influenza sulla politica estera e sulla definizione degli obiettivi bellici della Germania nazista è stata ampiamente discussa in ambito storiografico – e per la sua attività di mediazione nel riavvicinamento tra Tokyo e Berlino alla metà degli anni Trenta. Minore attenzione ha invece ricevuto il ruolo di Haushofer nella politica culturale tedesca in Italia, a cui partecipò sia in veste istituzionale, come presidente della Deutsche Akademie dal 1934 al 1937, sia in maniera “informale”, curando una serie di rapporti personali con diversi esponenti del panorama politico e intellettuale italiano che si protrassero fino agli anni Quaranta, ma incontrando anche una crescente ostilità da parte del regime fascista, dovuta soprattutto al suo coinvolgimento nella questione altoatesina.
Il presente contributo intende offrire un quadro complessivo sulla partecipazione di Karl Haushofer alla politica culturale italo-tedesca dal 1934 al 1939, prendendo in considerazione tanto la creazione di reti di relazioni con istituzioni e singole personalità (tra cui l’Istituto di Studi Germanici e l’Istituto per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente, i rispettivi dirigenti e i geografi che fondarono la rivista “Geopolitica”) quanto gli scopi, le contraddizioni e le riflessioni geopolitiche che accompagnarono i suoi rapporti con l’Italia durante gli anni Trenta. Questo secondo aspetto permetterà inoltre di analizzare la concezione dell’Asse Roma-Berlino elaborata dalla geopolitica tedesca e la prospettiva globale in cui Haushofer collocò lo sviluppo di legami politico-culturali tra Italia e Germania, soprattutto in un’ottica di confronto con l’impero britannico e di un riavvicinamento trilaterale al Giappone
Introduzione. Filosofia e letteratura. Un colloquio pensante
No full textIt is challenging to delineate a comprehensive account of the relationship between philosophy and literature, due to the ancient, profound and complex nature of their interconnection. This relationship is not merely one of proximity. Instead, it represents an intricate intertwining that involves the various ways in which humans derive meaning from the world and existence itself. Philosophy explores this meaning through concepts and logical argumentation, whereas literature does so through narrative, symbols and imagery. Yet, the boundaries between these two domains are often porous and permeable: philosophy can take on narrative forms, while literature frequently incorporates existential and metaphysical reflections, thereby giving rise to a shared area for inquiry and interpretation. It is in this space that philosophy and literature meet and engage in a dialogue of thought, not as discrete disciplines but as complementary means of examining the human condition. The current issue of Thaumazein is structured in two parts. The first part examines works that exist “between” these two spheres – literary texts that are inherently philosophical. The second part shifts towards a perspective that is more explicitly philosophical-phenomenological, hermeneutical, aesthetic or religious – in order to explore the fruitful hybridisation between literature and philosophy
A Land for Strangers. Non-Native Individuals and Communities in Cyprus
Get PDFWhat happens when ‘strangers’ become part of the very fabric of a place? In Cyprus, newcomers have never been a rarity. Owing to the island’s strategic position at the crossroads of the eastern Mediterranean, they have long played a central role in its history. Far from disrupting the cohesion of local society, their presence has often enriched Cypriot culture, fostering coexistence and diversity rather than friction and division.
This volume comprises seven essays that explore the diverse circumstances, narratives and contributions of non-native individuals to Cypriot society, economy, politics and culture – from prehistory to the present day. The authors, whose expertise spans archaeology, epigraphy, history and anthropology, apply distinct methodologies to a broad range of topics: the circulation of Aegean pottery; epigraphic practices in Hellenistic inscriptions; the presence of Greek Orthodox Venetians in mid-eighteenth-century Larnaca; the activities of French consuls in Cyprus during the mid-nineteenth century; the 1962 visit of Soviet professor Sergey Kisselyoff, marking the first contact between the USSR and Cyprus; the service of Václav Ježek as a priest in twentieth-century rural Cyprus; and a reflection on Cypriot antiquities collections through the work of contemporary artist Marianna Christofides. A thought-provoking preface and an introspective afterword provide the broader interpretive frame for the volume.
A Land for Strangers offers insight into Cyprus’s identity as a meeting ground for human encounters, while also proposing a model of fruitful coexistence of lasting relevance to contemporary societies
The glass from the Western Defences at Butrint
No full textThe analysis of glass finds from the Western Defenses of Butrint, particularly from Towers 1 and 2, focused on the cataloguing and study of glass fragments, including window glass, bottles, jugs, and goblets, classified by type, color, and manufacturing technique. The research identified several variants of goblets, discusses their dating and provenance, and uses chemical composition data to determine the origin of the glass. The analysis suggests a complex trade network linking Butrint with Egypt, Syria, and Palestine during the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. Finally, the study interprets the context of the finds, especially in Tower 1, as a possible storage area for trade or recycling, offering insights into the economic and cultural dynamics of the time
Markov Switching Tensor Regressions
No full textA new flexible tensor-on-tenor regression model that accounts for latent regime changes is proposed. The coefficients are driven by a common hidden Markov process that addresses structural breaks to enhance the model's flexibility and preserve parsimony. A new soft PARAFAC hierarchical prior is introduced to achieve dimensionality reduction while preserving the structural information of the covariate tensor. The proposed prior includes a new multi-way shrinking effect to address over-parametrization issues while preserving interpretability and model tractability. An efficient MCMC algorithm is introduced based on a random scan Gibbs and back-fitting strategy. The model framework’s effectiveness is illustrated using financial and commodity market volatility data. Demographic changes in a shorebird population in concomitance with the COVID-19 anthropause
No full textAnimal response to different levels of human activity is relevant to applied ecology and to guide conservation actions. Evidence on animal responses to the COVID-19 lockdown spans a wide range of biological and ecological proofs, albeit an evaluation at the level to which vital rates drive population dynamics is still lacking. We examined changes in the demographic contribution of survival and recruitment processes to population growth before, during, and just after the COVID-19 lockdown, in a shorebird species that is subject to human perturbation on breeding habitats, mainly due to recreational activities. We applied a model-based approach, that allows inference on variation of population growth rate and associated vital rates (apparent survival probability and per-capita recruitment) over time, to capture-mark-reencounter data from the Italian kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus breeding population. A temporary change in demography was recorded following the COVID-19 lockdown carried out during the 2020 breeding and pre-breeding season. Prior to COVID-19 lockdown, the study population was decreasing, with a higher contribution of survivors from the previous year to the breeding population of the following year than from recruitment. This pattern was temporarily reversed during and just after the lockdown, when per-capita recruitment and its contribution to population growth rate more than doubled, leading to an increase in the population. Our study provides insights into the response of demographic processes of a bird species to the halting of human perturbation, as happened during the COVID-19 lockdow

No full textThis paper discusses a Renaissance astronomical manuscript which is preserved in the
Biblioteca Antoniana in Padua, and titled Delle revolutioni delle sfere celesti libri IX by Giulio
Cesare Luchini of Bologna. Despite its scientific merit and the reference to Copernicus
in its title, this manuscript has gone largely unnoticed by historians. Luchini’s work, which
was completed around 1581, offers a comprehensive treatise on mathematical astronomy
and serves as an early example of the vernacular reception of Copernicus in Italy. Unlike
other vernacular accounts, Luchini’s manuscript avoids embracing the physical reality
of heliocentrism, focusing instead on the geometrical and computational aspects of
Copernican models while maintaining a geocentric worldview which is consistent with
Aristotelian philosophy. The manuscript also explores astrological applications, reflecting
the practical dimension of the astronomy of that time. Luchini’s explicit adaptation of
Copernicus’s reciprocation mechanism, which is also known as the Ṭūsī couple, highlights
the complex and independent nature of diagrammatic representation and conceptual
adherence in Renaissance astronomy. Our study posits Luchini’s appropriation of
Copernicus’s reciprocation construct in the context of modern discussions on the origin
and transmission of this geometrical tool for modeling planetary motions
