Meaningful Prospective Work drives Purpose in Life: The Role of Future Work Self
No full textHaving meaningful work is a shared aspiration for both experienced workers and young adults entering the job market, as meaningful work ensures several important outcomes such as psychological well-being. Research to date has primarily focused on contextual organizational factors to explain how work can be perceived as meaningful. However, self-awareness derived from the mental image of one’s desired work state also offers an opportunity to foster a profound sense of meaning. To illustrate this possibility we draw on the concept of Future Work Self (FWSs, Strauss et al., 2012), which refers to cognitive representations of individuals’ deepest hopes and aspirations in relation to work. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore the potential of the FWS in activating a process of meaning making. We further investigate how meaning making and FWS contributes to achieving a purpose in life. Understanding these relationships is crucial for gaining insights on how individuals derive meaning to guide their career management and, ultimately, enhance their sense of purpose in life. Data were collected through a two-wave survey from a sample of graduate students (N = 117). At Time 1, data on FWS salience and positive affect were collected. A follow-up survey, 12 weeks later, assessed meaning making and purpose in life. Hypotheses testing revealed that higher levels of FWS salience and positive affect in envisioning the FWS were significantly related to meaning making, which in turn predicted purpose in life. The findings also indicated a mediated relationship between FWS positive affect and purpose in life, with meaning making serving as a mediator. Overall, this study extends our understanding on how individuals can derive meaning from an hypothetical work, and also contributes to the FWS literature by providing evidence of the predictive potential of FWSs in meaning making and in fostering a sense of purpose in life

Graphene-modified TiO2–CuO thin films multifunctional energy and environmental applications
No full textIn this study, unmodified and graphene (G)-modified TiO2–CuO mixed oxide thin films were synthesized via spray pyrolysis, incorporating varying graphene content (y = 2, 4, 6, and 8 at. %). The modified samples were subjected to photocatalytic (Rhodamine B (RhB), Malachite green (MG), Methylene Blue, and Methyl Orange) and photovoltaic performance evaluations. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of well-crystalline thin films, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) (XPS) provided insights into the electronic states of Cu, Ti, C, and O elements. After graphene modification, the Cu 2p and Ti 2p spectra exhibited a negative and positive shift, respectively, indicating Cu reduction and Ti oxidation. Optical absorption analysis revealed an increase in band gap energy with higher graphene concentrations, reaching 1.78 eV at 6 at. % graphene content. The as-prepared samples were tested for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes in polluted water, including Rhodamine B (RhB), Malachite Green (MG), Methylene Blue (MB), and Methyl Orange (MO). The film dropped at 8 at. % graphene demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic efficiency, achieving degradation rates of 90 %, 85 %, 96 %, and 87 % for RhB, MG, MB, and MO, respectively, within 2 h of solar illumination. Furthermore, the application of G-TiO2-CuO as a secondary absorber layer in CZTS solar cells was optimized using Silvaco TCAD software, resulting in an efficiency enhancement from 10.25 % to 15.31 %. These findings highlight the crucial role of graphene modification in enhancing the physical properties of semiconductor materials, making them promising candidates for advanced optoelectronic applications

Si eso: la emergencia de una «partícula modal» en el español del siglo XXI
No full textThe present article tackles the study of the new conditional expression si eso in 21st century Spanish. Based on the analysis of a representative corpus of colloquial written Spanish, over a hundred instances of this emerging particle are examined. As the main hypothesis, this expression is described as a modal particle and its functions are looked for within the components of illocutionary act, particularly as a mitigation device for weakening the speaker's commitment to the truth of propositional content, as well as to the obligations assigned to the hearer. Three primary values are proposed for this particle (eventuality, necessity, and scalarity), along with some formal indicators that materialize these semantic distinctions. The development of this particle represents a challenge for historical linguistics and semantic-pragmatic studies, as its polysemy and polyfunctionality is deploying in real-time
The Fathers’ Illusion of Redemption, Their Children’s Perception of Pain: Migratory, Family, and Intergenerational Trajectories of Italian-Bangladeshis Relocating to London
Get PDFThis article is the result of a broader research project on the onward migration of Bangladeshi migrants in Italy who, once they have acquired Italian citizenship – and so a European passport – set off on a new migration to London, just before the “Brexit” referendum. The empirical evidence for the article comes from 40 in-depth interviews 1) with Italian-Bangladeshi men who have either already onward-migrated or are planning on doing so, and 2) with some of their children. The main motivation for this onward migration is the investment of first-migrant fathers in their children. Born and socialized in Italy, this so-called “second generation” have formal Italian citizenship, but are still subjected to processes of racialization and experience discrimination in public spaces and in political and media debates, and are also at risk of following their fathers into unskilled factory work, despite having acquired educational qualifications. The strategy for dealing with this “effect of destiny” is a “leap forward” into a context perceived – and idealized – as more meritocratic and governed by multiculturalism in which their presence would not need to be justified. However, the new migration is experienced by their children as a form of uprooting, similar to what their fathers experienced

This chapter examines how the SDGs framework, alongside the shared value paradigm, can drive responsible business practices. Achieving the SDGs requires a shift in mindset toward maximizing outcomes through three key extensions: a) a temporal shift towards long-term thinking, b) a stakeholder shift from prioritizing shareholders to considering a broader range of stakeholders, particularly customers, and c) a value creation shift, focusing on shared value rather than just profit. National culture, as seen in Europe, plays a significant role in fostering this mindset change. Indeed, enhancing the quality, comparability, and consistency of companies’ sustainability metrics and reporting is crucial for improving transparency, a cornerstone of responsible business committed to sustainable development

The action research provided for participation in the team that carried out the project, combining quantitative data – related to the App usage and interactions recorded within it – with qualitative
data, pertaining to the narrative reports periodically exchanged between the company’s spokespeople (those who had the role of Ambassador and Buddy) and the beHippo staff. Additionally, researchers both co-designed some of the detection tools used to monitor the platform and provided guidance on the prototyping process. Through the analysis of the case study data, this contribution offers an overview of the primary advantages and limitations associated with the adoption of digital tools to enhance trust and improve the quality of relationships in organizational settings
