Plena matronarum domus: l’ultimo Augusto, Livia e le donne della Domus Principis
This paper seeks to demonstrate the central role occupied by the figure of Livia throughout the late Augustan period, alongside her children and husband, while shedding light on the role of the matrona in the construction of the domus principis. Particular emphasis is placed on the growing influence she came to wield, beginning in 35 BCE—when she and Octavia were granted sacrosanctitas—and extending through her adoption by Augustus and the bestowal of the title Augusta. This trajectory encompasses the public rituals surrounding the death of her elder son Drusus and culminates in the dynastic settlement of 4 CE. In this light, Livia emerges as a model for subsequent imperial women
Shamanism and Psychoactives: Theory, Practice and Paradoxes of a Field Study in India
Since its origins, the debate on the interaction between religions and psychoactives has been strongly influenced, both positively and negatively, by prejudices, policies, fashions and trends that had little to do with scientific research. Stigma and exaltation in different historical moments have equally characterized the study of the presence and use of so-called entheogens in the different declinations of the shamanic phenomenon around the world. This article attempts to shed light on the various trends regarding the state of the art, providing new epistemological elements on the basis of an ethnographic investigation among some Indigenous peoples of India. The production of alcoholic beverages (fermented and distilled, but sometimes in combination with other psychoactive or hallucinogens among the starters) is a fundamental trait of the aboriginal (ādivāsī) cultures of the Indian subcontinent. Not immune from an attempt at political instrumentalization, which occurred both in the colonial period and in the contemporary era, the discourse on the natural production of these sacred substances is today the key to understanding indigenous ontology and its traditional idea of sustainability. Far beyond the mere documentation of the induction of altered states of consciousness, this investigation involves the discovery of local pharmacopeias, as well as principles of fermentation and food preservation
Optimizing over Path-Length Matrices of Unrooted Binary Trees
Path-Length Matrices (PLMs) form a tree encoding scheme that is often used in the context of optimization problems defined over Unrooted Binary Trees (UBTs). Determining the conditions that a symmetric integer matrix of order must satisfy to encode the PLM of a UBT with leaves is central to these applications. Here, we show that a certain subset of known necessary conditions is also sufficient to characterize the set \T of PLMs induced by the set of UBTs with leaves. We also identify key polyhedral results as well as facet-defining and valid inequalities for the convex hull of these matrices. We then examine how these results can be used to develop a new Branch-\&-Cut algorithm for the Balanced Minimum Evolution Problem (BMEP), a -hard nonlinear optimization problem over \T much studied in the literature on molecular phylogenetics. We present a new valid integer linear programming formulation for this problem and we show how to refine it, by removing redundant variables and constraints. We also show how to strengthen the reduced formulation by including lifted versions of the previously identified facet-defining and valid inequalities. We provide separation oracles for these inequalities and we exploit the tight lower bound provided by the linear programming relaxation of this formulation to design a new primal heuristic for the BMEP. The results of extensive computational experiments show that the Branch-&-Cut algorithm derived from this study outperforms the current state-of-the-art exact solution algorithm for the problem
Reoccupation of late Quaternary relative sea level indicators in a tectonically quasi-stable coastal area in Southern Italy (Cilento headland): Insights into the Last Interglacial stillstands
A geomorphological-stratigraphical study, integrated with a modelling approach, has been employed to constrain the age of relative sea-level indicators (RSLi) along the quasi-stable Mt. Bulgheria coast in the southern Apennines, located on the eastern margin of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Focusing on the geological evidence of late Quaternary sea-level fluctuations within the 0 to 12 m above sea level (a.s.l.) elevation range, we describe RSLi along ca. 8 km of coastline and constrain their elevation, including those of previously undated RSLi in the same area. The reassessment of field data was needed to address the phenomenon of the reoccupation of older RSLi by younger ones. The approach employs the synchronous correlation method, integrating highstand peak elevations
from global sea-level curves and a calibrated uplift rate value, derived from the correlation of RSLi-2 (currently at 8 ± 1 m a.s.l.) with Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 9c, as suggested by recent findings.
Overall, four RSLi are identified in the investigated coastal zone: RSLi-1 (11 ± 1 m a.s.l.), correlated with MIS 11; RSLi-2 (8 ± 1 m a.s.l.), correlated with MIS 9c and reoccupied during the first MIS 5e peak; RSLi-3 (4 ± 0.5 m a.s.l.) formed during an earlier, undefined stage and reoccupied during MIS 5e; RSLi-4 (2.5 ± 0.5 m a.s.l.) also assigned to MIS 5e. Notably, two cases of reoccupation of older RSLi by younger ones are here reported.
By testing multiple global sea-level curves, we derived a range of possible uplift rates for the chronologically constrained RSLi-2. Consequently, assuming a constant uplift rate throughout the final part of the Middle Pleistocene, we sought the optimal match between all observed RSLi and predicted elevation of palaeo sea levels during past highstands.
The preferred best fit was obtained using a composite eustatic curve from Waelbroeck et al. (2002) and Kopp et al. (2013, for within the MIS5e), and a constant uplift rate of 0.009 mm/yr. Our modelling of MIS 5e (Last Interglacial) identifies three sea-level stillstands and a rapid drop in sea level following the first and higheststillstand. Our results emphasize the importance of the reoccupation problem in sea-level reconstruction studies, especially for RSLi located in regions that are tectonically stable or with relatively low rates of crustal vertical movements. In such contexts, the sea level during younger interglacials may reach or exceed the elevations of older interglacials, reusing or modifying existing RSLi and complicating the identification of which sea-level stand created a specific shoreline feature. The calibrated model supports scenarios where MIS 5e, MIS 9c and MIS 11 had higher peaks than the Holocene (so far). Finally, this work challenges the assumption that RSL indicators ranging between 5 and 8 m a.s.l. in stable regions were exclusively formed during MIS 5e, emphasising
the need for precise age constraints in these interpretations
Two Unnoticed References to Aristophanes and One to Demosthenes in Pollux: The Contribution of Ms. Matritensis 4625 to Atticist Lexicography
This paper analyses the ms. Matritensis 4625 (Pollux’s Onomasticon), a witness neglected by Bethe in his edition. The text of this manuscript preserves a different and in several passages more complete redaction of the Onomasticon. It was therefore possible to identify, in Book 2, two unnoticed references to Aristophanes and one to Demosthenes
dello studio; infatti, pur essendo decise unilateralmente dagli organi dello studio
In his Meditations Marcus Aurelius insistently returns to the purely Stoic ques-
tion of accepting destiny and the role that every human being must play in the world.
This contribution focuses on the ‘will’, essential to make this acceptance effective and
operational. It is a will resulting from a severe path of self-education and serious train-
ing favoured by friends and influential teachers. A will which, within the folds of Marcus
Aurelius’ Selbsbetrachtungen, can be qualified as the expression of an emotion (i.e. of a
desire) or as the expression of a decision. A will which is at the service of hêgemonikon
and is configured as a necessary means to achieve the ‘coherence’ that every human
being (not necessarily the sapiens) must set as an objective, once what is ‘up to him’
has been defined

A novel method to assess the dilution of complex mixtures in the marine environment: Application to marine scrubber water effluents
A new method is introduced that, using water-quality modelling results focused on single substances, estimates the degree of the progressive dilution and degradation of a complex mixture after discharge in the marine environment, until its consistency is modified due to different biogeochemical processes acting on its constituents. The method is based on the variance between the dilution ratios of scrubber water constituents and is applied to scrubber water effluents in two case studies in the Mediterranean Sea, using both Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks. Results reveal that, prior to the onset of biogeochemical transformations, scrubber water behaves as a homogeneous mixture through turbulent mixing with surrounding water, gradually diluting to
10 5–10 10 ratios, in spatiotemporal scales ranging from 2 to 25 km and 2 to 60 h. The proposed method generates scrubber-water dilution maps, directly comparable to the results of “whole effluent” ecotoxicological experiments, making them suitable for risk and impact assessment studies
