Evaluation of the 3D response and performance of an operational wave buoy for coastal wave monitoring

    No full text
This study analyzes the in situ 3D response and performance of a large, moored, accelerometer-based wave buoy designed for the new Italian buoy network. Deployed in coastal waters near an oceanographic tower in the North Adriatic Sea, the buoy's capability to follow wave motion was evaluated against a stereo-imaging system and a wave gauge. By employing a novel optical system based on stereo view, the 3D buoy displacement (vertical and horizontal motions) was measured, providing insights into buoy dynamics and enabling comparison with the onboard wave sensor. Measurements indicate good agreement between buoy heave and wave elevation in a narrow frequency band of 0.15–0.60 Hz, except around 0.52 Hz, which represents the buoy's natural frequency. Performance degradation at low and high frequencies was attributed to sensor processing as well as buoy and mooring responses, which were addressed by calibrating an empirical response operator for the buoy heave. Furthermore, a phase delay in horizontal motion was observed, likely caused by buoy inertia. For wave statistics, while the buoy effectively captures linear waveforms, it shows reduced sensitivity to second-order nonlinear effects due to its dynamic response, impacting the ability to observe maximum wave elevations. Despite these limitations, buoy data reliably estimate significant wave height and mean wave direction. This study enhances the understanding of moored buoy dynamics and aids in optimising buoy response for coastal wave monitoring

Rivendicazioni in videotape. Movimenti per una Barcellona comunitaria (1977-1983)

    No full text

    Graded Qualities

    No full text
The idea that qualities can be had partly or to an intermediate degree is controversial among contemporary metaphysicians, but also has a considerable pedigree among philosophers and scientists. In this paper, we first aim to show that metaphysical sense can be made of this idea by proposing a partial taxonomy of metaphysical accounts of graded qualities, focusing on three particular approaches: one which explicates having a quality to a degree in terms of having a property with an in-built degree, another based on the idea that instantiation admits of degrees, and a third which derives the degree to which a quality is had from the aspects of multidimensional properties. Our second aim is to demonstrate that the choice between these account can make a substantial metaphysical difference. To make this point, we rely on two case studies (involving quantum observables and values) in which we apply the accounts in order to model apparent cases of metaphysical gradedness

Application of Zinc-Based Metal-Organic Framework ZIF-8 on Paper: A Pilot Study on Visual Appearance and Effectiveness

    No full text
Paper and cellulose-based materials are known for their sensitivity to humidity, which can create stresses among fibres and increase fragility. More importantly, humidity can lead to the formation of mould and stains, compromising both aesthetic value and long-term preservation, particularly for historical documents and books. This study explored the application of in situ prepared Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF-8), a zinc-based MOF, on paper as a potential antimicrobial material. Hand-made and commercially printed papers were tested to assess the effective deposition and formation of the ZIF-8 network, with a focus on both visual appearance and physicochemical characteristics. X-ray fluorescence and diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed the successful formation of the ZIF-8 network in all papers. The Zn content varied, as expected, depending on application time and paper characteristics. All treated papers exhibited minor variations in brilliance and showed slightly increased rigidity. The formation of white spots linked to Zn accumulation was observed, particularly in printed books where colourimetric and microscopic variations were more pronounced

    No full text

Sustainable tourism: A critical assessment of Target 9.8

    No full text
This critical assessment unpacks SDG 8 and in particular Target 8.9 – especially in terms of its indicators – to determine how the growth approach to tourism development has led to many conflicts with other SDGs, as well as causing a number of negative impacts from a social and environmental perspective (pre-COVID-19). Specific challenges related to the growth paradigm are presented and discussed in relation to Target 8.9 and its indicators. This includes both overtourism and precarious employment in tourism. Furthermore, the chapter points out research avenues that might offer potential pathways (post-COVID-19) to develop tourism towards more sustainable trajectories within Target 8.9 while respecting the environmental and social limits of a planet with finite resources. This includes paradigm shifts from, for example, a growth orientation to a stewardship orientation or from a shareholder orientation to a stakeholder orientation. The focus is on governance and the formalisation of tourism work, education, and training to create more sustainable tourism growth and reach the targets of multiple SDGs

    No full text
The archaeological research conducted in the cryptoporticus of Alife, in the province of Caserta (Italy), has led to the discovery of several graffiti dating back to the Roman era. The most recent editions provide an opportunity to reconsider these testimonies from a paleographic perspective, allowing us to indirectly reflect on the graphic-cultural context in which they are situated

    No full text
