No full textCommunication has always been a fundamental element in fostering relationships and interactions within societies. In the Roman world, messages were conveyed through a variety of mediums and addressed to heterogeneous social groups. Ancient sources reveal the significant role of gestures, particularly when used by women in contexts traditionally inaccessible to them. Agrippina the Elder, a central figure in the dynastic politics of Augustus and Tiberius, navigated the constraints of the mos maiorum to influence public
and military affairs. Through her gestural and emotional interventions, she demonstrated the capacity of women to shape collective sentiments and support dynastic legitimacy, thereby challenging traditional gendered boundaries in Roman public life
The Sino-Vietnamese negative prefixes bất, vô, phi and their coexistence with sentential negators: A synchronic and diachronic analysis
No full textThis paper presents a comprehensive synchronic and diachronic analysis of the Sino-Vietnamese negative prefixes bất (Chinese 不 bù), vô (無 wú), and phi (非 fēi), examining their historical development and modern usage in Vietnamese, with a comparative perspective on their Chinese equivalents. By investigating the interaction between these prefixes and Vietnamese sentential negators—such as the native chẳng and the Chinese-derived không—the study explores the evolution of negation in Vietnamese over several centuries. The research draws on a corpus of three bilingual Classical Chinese-Vietnamese translations of Confucius’s Analects from the 17th, 19th, and 21st centuries, two written in traditional Nôm script and one in the modern Quốc ngữ alphabet. This corpus provides valuable insights into linguistic shifts driven by language contact in Vietnam. The findings reveal that in the 17th century, the Sino-Vietnamese prefixes bất, vô, and phi were largely absent, with native chẳng dominating. By the 19th century, chẳng persisted, but không emerged as a sentential negator, and bất appeared, both reflecting Chinese forms and demonstrating innovative uses. In the 21st century, không became the dominant negator, with bất and vô seeing increased usage, reflecting broader trends of linguistic modernization. This study situates these changes within the broader context of 20th-century East Asian literacy expansion, where Japan played a pivotal role in disseminating modernized Chinese-based vocabulary. By examining the selective adaptation and integration of Sino-Vietnamese elements, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of language contact, syntactic influence, and lexical innovation in the evolving Vietnamese lexicon

No full textThere is still a problem of historiographical legitimisation of oral history methodology in Ital-ian universities today. Not only is oral history rarely practiced by contemporary history scholars, but existing oral archives are also not consulted by researchers who would, in fact, be ex-pected to use them given the nature of their studies. Recent historiographical syntheses on the history of Republican Italy written by Italian authors do not make use of oral sources, nor do they reference the historiography that drew on them. In Italy, there are no books that systematically use oral sources to address the country’s social history over the long term. Even with-in the realm of ego-documents used in historiography, “autobiographical writings” (letters, di-aries, memoirs of ordinary people) have achieved far greater legitimisation in Italy than oral sources. This situation has at least three explanations. First, the underdevelopment of sound studies in Italian historiography and the research practices and approaches of many Italian contemporary historians, who tend to prioritize institutional political history and show little interest in social history and the history of collective subjects. Second, there is a problem related to the condition of oral archives: they are difficult to access and they lack tools facilitat-ing their use, such as catalogs, indexes, cards, and transcriptions. Finally, there is an absence of a tested and shared experience of historiographical reuse of “archival oral sources”, mean-ing interviews conducted in the past with individuals and social groups that are no longer accessible to present-day researchers

Starting with the discipline dedicated to general managers by banking regulations – particularly the recently introduced power of removal in the Italian legal system – it becomes apparent that the legislative system can define this entity’s typical responsibilities, thereby removing the obstacles posed by the courts

No full textIl volume vuole descrivere (e interrogarsi su) un momento di grande tumultuosità della democrazia occidentale, per non dire di vera e propria messa in discussione dei suoi classici presupposti e, di contro, sulle proposte strutturali di livello costituzionale con riguardo all’ordinamento italiano rispetto al quale, peraltro, sono stati fatti, a partire dalla fine degli anni Ottanta, tentativi importanti di mutamento del sistema parlamentare vigente, tutti falliti sino ad ora. È sembrato opportuno raccontare (e ragionare “a caldo” su) eventi di una certa rilevanza istituzionale – dunque non solo politica – che si sono succeduti in Paesi (Francia e Germania) che, come il nostro, costituiscono un asse strategico per la stessa Unione Europea ovvero in un Paese, quello degli Stati Uniti d’America, considerato, in particolare dal secondo dopoguerra in avanti, un “baluardo” per la difesa dei principi e valori dell’Occidente democratico, nonostante un sistema di governo presidenziale (che ne costituisce un unicum), ben bilanciato quanto a contropoteri da opporre a pericolose derive di leaderismo estremo che, tuttavia, dopo la seconda rielezione di Donald Trump, vengono perlomeno paventate
