Economic Activity, Life, and Knowledge in the Anthropocene
No full textThis lesson is based on an interdisciplinary perspective that draws on anthropology, philosophy, and history. The purpose of the lesson is to examine the interconnections between the following three concepts: economic activity, economic life, and the knowledge economy. More specifically, I would like to show how material economic activity intersects with social economic life, and how both depend on knowledge economies to deal with environmental contingencies. This discussion is framed in relation to the potential anthropogenic ecological disaster often subsumed under the concept of the Anthropocene. After offering some theoretical considerations, the lesson concludes by discussing why Venice is an invaluable epistemic resource for understanding these concepts in practical terms

No full textDrawing on extensive research with students of Italian as a Foreign Language, this book investigates whether immersive VR environments can foster positive interdependence as the foundation of successful cooperative learning in blended educational settings. Through digital storytelling activities, students navigated virtual worlds while developing crucial mediation strategies that facilitate language acquisition through goal-oriented collaboration. Critical gaps in language education are addressed by examining how VR technology impacts student relationships, teamwork dynamics, and the development of communicative competencies essential for our increasingly digital society. Moving beyond traditional approaches to language pedagogy, the book demonstrates how virtual experiences can create authentic contexts for meaningful linguistic interaction. It also provides practical frameworks for integrating immersive technologies into language curricula, offers strategies for developing mediation skills in virtual settings, and presents comprehensive guidelines for teachers implementing tech-based language education. Can the Life‐World be an Illusion?
Get PDFThe relation between, on the one hand, the life-world in which both pre-scientific life and the work of scientists take place, and, on the other, the mathematized nature of modern physics raises a number of questions that Harald Wiltsche jointly characterizes as the problem of coordination. One of such questions concerns the possibility to reconcile optimism about the ontological value of physical theories with the recognition that their evidential basis is inevitably confined to the life-world. Wiltsche suggests that this problem becomes especially acute in the case of a theory such as Quantum Field Theory, which seems to reduce the life-world to a mere illusion. Based on a reconsideration of the necessary founding role of the life-world for any conceivable physical theory, I suggest a way in which transcendental phenomenology can answer this question. I conclude by arguing that such solution implies a radical revision of Husserl’s conception of natura formaliter spectata

Ethical Frontiers of AI in Language Pedagogy: Navigating Transparency, Accountability, and Equity

One way to explore the multifaceted ethical implications of AI tools in language teaching and learning through the lens of transparency, accountability, and equity is by drawing upon the OECD principles for responsible AI implementation. The study investigates three primary ethical dimensions: transparency in AI tool usage, accountability for AI-mediated learning outcomes, and equity in access and implementation. Through a comprehensive review of current literature and practical implementations, the paper explores guidelines for ethical AI integration into language education that prioritize student learning while mitigating potential technological risks. Recommendations emerging from the analysis include emphasizing the need for transparent disclosure protocols, honing students’ awareness of AI capabilities and limitations, and establishing responsible accountability mechanisms. The research ultimately argues for a balanced approach that leverages AI's transformative potential while maintaining human-centered pedagogical principles, highlighting the critical role of ongoing evaluation and adaptive strategies in navigating the ethical frontiers of AI in language education
Flexible space-time models for extreme data
No full textExtreme value analysis is an essential methodology in the study of rare and extreme events, which hold significant interest in various fields, particularly in the context of environmental sciences. Models that employ the exceedances of values above suitably selected high thresh- olds possess the advantage of capturing the “sub-asymptotic” dependence of data. This paper presents an extension of spatial random scale mixture models to the spatio-temporal domain. A comprehensive framework for characterizing the dependence structure of extreme events across both dimensions is provided. Indeed, the model is capable of distinguishing between asymptotic dependence and independence, both in space and time, through the use of parametric inference. The high complexity of the likelihood function for the proposed model necessitates a simulation approach based on neural networks for parameter estima- tion, which leverages summaries of the sub-asymptotic dependence present in the data. The effectiveness of the model in assessing the limiting dependence structure of spatio-temporal processes is demonstrated through both simulation studies and an application to rainfall datasets

No full textQuesto articolo mira a illustrare il progetto di ricerca "Vie di uscita. Storie di scatti e di vita", che appartiene a una delle linee di azione previste dal Progetto di Eccellenza (2023-2027) del Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Culturali Comparati dell'Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia. Il principale obiettivo è di esplorare l'impatto dei social media sull'adattamento socio-culturale e linguistico degli adolescenti migranti. Attraverso un approccio misto di ricerca, che combina metodi qualitativi e quantitativi, il progetto indaga come questi ambienti possano sia facilitare che ostacolare il processo di integrazione. Vengono utilizzati strumenti come questionari e metodi come Photovoice e Storycrafting per esplorare le esperienze e le pratiche di adattamento dei giovani migranti. La sfida pedagogica del progetto consiste nel creare interventi formativi partecipativi che promuovano un uso consapevole e autoregolato dei social media, facilitando l'inclusione e l'empowerment degli adolescenti migranti
Consistent and Scalable Composite Likelihood Estimation of Probit Models with Crossed Random Effects
No full textEstimation of crossed random effects models commonly requires computational costs that grow faster than linearly in the sample size N, often as fast as Ω(N 3/2), making them unsuitable for large data sets. For non-Gaussian responses, integrating out the random effects to get a marginal likelihood brings significant challenges, especially for high dimensional integrals where the Laplace approximation might not be accurate. We develop a composite likelihood approach to probit models that replaces the crossed random effects model with some hierarchical models that require only one-dimensional integrals. We show how to consistently estimate the crossed effects model parameters from the hierarchical model fits.We find that the computation scales linearly in the sample size. We illustrate the method on about five million observations from Stitch Fix where the crossed effects formulation would require an integral of dimension larger than 700000
When it was 2024 – Generative AI in the field of digital scholarly editions
No full textThis contribution examines the current state of research on generative AI applications in digital scholarly editing. Drawing from experiments presented at the DHd 2024 workshop and additional literature, it identifies eight key application areas for Large Language Models (LLMs): (1) documentation of textual transmission, (2) post-processing of retro-digitized editions, (3) text establishment (transcription, layout analysis, OCR/HTR post-processing, markup), (4) normalization, (5) named entity recognition (NER) and other semantic annotation, (6) information enrichment, (7) translation, and (8) summarization. While among these areas, NER garnered the most experimental attention at the workshop, a comprehensive architecture for integrating generative AI across the full editorial stack was proposed. The paper concludes by identifying critical areas for future research: from a practical perspective, the field needs standardized workflow orchestration and evaluation protocols; from a theoretical perspective, researchers must systematically assess the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs in digital scholarly editions while addressing their inherent biases and ethical implications
