Entrepreneurial Firms and Bank Financing: Do Business Angels Play a Role?
Get PDFThis paper investigates the contribution provided by business angels' (BAs) post-investment intervention to the interaction between young entrepreneurial firms and bank lending decisions within the entrepreneurial finance ecosystem. The analysis relies on a data set comprising 114 Italian BA-backed firms over the 2010–2018 period, alongside 498 matched firms. We find evidence that BAs' support makes it easier for entrepreneurial firms to raise follow-on bank financing. Additionally, we document the positive effects of both BAs' entrepreneurial experience and soft monitoring. These effects can be attributed to BAs' value-added contributions and their role in mitigating information asymmetries perceived by debt providers

In each chapter, the authors discuss the topic of ‘time’ in relation to different aspects of a number of East Asian languages that are rarely represented in typological studies (Nivkh, Nighvng, Chalkan, Khitan, Ainu, Sakizaya, Kaxabu, Ryukyuan languages, Hachijō, Manchurian, and Yu). Does a Foreign Subsidiary Create Positive Linkages with Local Suppliers? An Analysis of Governance and Upgrading in Toyota Argentina’s Automotive Value Chain
Get PDFThis article explores the impact of the performance of Toyota Argentina (TASA) on the local auto parts suppliers in the country. The paper begins by providing a brief overview of the global value chains (GVCs) and the development links between automakers and local suppliers. Then, it introduces the trends in the Argentinian automotive industry during the 21st century, including the peculiarities of TASA, which has achieved great economic performance despite the industry’s structural and cyclical trends. Using a mixed methodology combining descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods, the paper analyzes the linkages between TASA and its suppliers. The article concludes with a general analysis of TASA’s governance and the upgrading processes of its suppliers based on the findings

Thailand 2023-2024: A general election and its contested aftermath
No full textThe Thai biennium 2023-2024 opened with the prospect of democratic change, as in
2023 citizens were able to vote in a general election. While the outcome spelled the
end of military rule after the two consecutive premierships of retired General Prayuth
Chan-ocha, the Army-drafted constitution of 2017 inhibited the smooth functioning
of participatory politics. Move Forward, a recently established party with a progressive
outlook and a defiant stance toward military and élite groups, won, but was prevented
from forming a government. Lengthy negotiations relegated it to the opposition,
favouring instead the Pheu Thai Party, which represented the legacy of the charismatic
ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Less ideologically committed, the Phue Thai Government
proved willing to compromise with the status quo – a strategy deemed pragmatic
by supporters, and self-serving by critics. The new administration additionally took a
controversial approach with regard to foreign policy, showing openness to the governments
of Myanmar and Russia, in continuity with previous military administrations.
Economic recovery under the Pheu Thai Government remained slow, also hindered
by an alarming rise in household debt and massive floods in 2024

Bright and Stable Electrochemiluminescence by Heterobimetallic IrIII‐MI (MI = CuI, AuI) Complexes
Get PDFIonic transition metal complexes (iTMCs) often suffer from low photoluminescence quantum yield, especially in the red to near-infrared spectral region. Rational molecular design strategies unlock recovering the emission features efficiently. A potential solution is offered by bimetallic complexes, which are rapidly emerging as a valid and attractive class of emitters. In this work, the yet unexplored electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties of a series of heterobimetallic complexes of general structure IrIII-MI are investigated, where the formally neutral cyclometalated iridium complex provides efficient photo- and electro-active properties to the molecular emitters. Whereas bulky MI (gold or copper) metalloligand increases structural rigidity and chemical stability of the architecture while enabling larger values for the radiative rate constant. The IrIII-MI shows highly efficient red ECL at λem,max = 600 nm, which is stable in a wider range of applied potential. The activation is triggered at 0.45–0.65 V, ca. 0.3–0.5 V lower than that of tris-(2,2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) complex, [Ru(bpy)3]2+. Remarkably, the ECL quantum yield relative to [Ru(bpy)3]2+ is up to six-fold higher, thus positioning this new series of iTMCs amongst the brightest ECL-active emitters to date and possibly offering a platform to develop novel and even more efficient ECL probes for biosensing and bioimaging applications

Deepening the City-Region Gap in 21st Century Japan: Smart Cities as a Tool to Achieve Administrative Neoliberalism
No full textIn the last three decades, administrative reforms in Japan have reshaped the relations between central and local governments. With the beginning of the structural reforms in the late 1990s and the neoliberal reforms of the Koizumi cabinet, jichitai have been pushed to become more autonomous vis-à-vis Tokyo. Against the backdrop of growing concern with climate change and energy production and supply, several local administrations have initiated plans to make their cities "smart" or "environmentally friendly" in line with a series of central government's guidelines. In this context, smart cities have emerged as strategic policy tools. On the one hand, they have contributed first to the implementation of long-term administrative reforms and second, to the reproduction and diffusion of neoliberal solution-oriented and technology-driven ideas of cities and communities, in both urban and rural contexts. In light of these facts, this chapter surveys smart city projects in Japan employing Kanemoto and Tokuoka's Urban Employment Area model to highlight persisting inequalities and imbalances between urban areas and regions. In doing this, this chapter offers a multi-level perspective on the decentralisation process clarifying the role of multiple actors involved in a complex sociotechnical network
