Wolfgang Kemp, Die ehrbaren Täuscher. Rembrandt und Descartes im Jahre 1641

    No full text
It was a remarkable coincidence that Descartes and Rembrandt were both in Amsterdam at the same time. There is no reliable evidence that they met or were familiar with each other's work. Wolfgang Kemp therefore does not undertake a historical-systematic reconstruction of possible relationships of influence, but rather plays through a large essay from changing perspectives to see what insights can be gained by comparing the problems and topics of the philosopher and the painter, in order to draw attention to aspects or topics that would remain unrecognized in an isolated examination. Paul Valery, who had already speculatively linked Descartes and Rembrandt in a diatribe, acts as mediator. Now the point of view is changed and the relationship between the two is examined from the perspective of art history

    No full text

From ‘Donor' to ‘Friend': Italy's Humanitarian Aid and South Korea’s Middle Power Diplomacy in the Wake of the Korean War

    No full text
This chapter analyses the interactions between Italy and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the early Cold War (1950-1957) against the backdrop of Rome’s decision to send humanitarian aid to Seoul. Based on archival documents from the Historical Diplomatic Archives at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Rome, this chapter focuses on Italy’s decision to send humanitarian aid to the ROK in 1950 and the strategic uses of that memory by ROK officials later in the decade. It aims to contribute to a better understanding of the interactions between two lesser powers in the context of the early Cold War period. In this sense, this chapter has demonstrated that, despite several constraints to their diplomatic preferences, Rome and Seoul were instrumental to their respective diplomatic agenda, establishing autonomous spaces for political and diplomatic manoeuvre notwithstanding their patron-the United States-preferences

Recent progress on Z- and S-scheme photocatalysis: mechanistic understanding toward green applications

    No full text
Photocatalysis has been widely used to address the environmental issues and energy crises that threaten the future of planet Earth. One of the main drawbacks to developing photocatalysts for practical applications is the electron–hole recombination concept, which seriously hinders the photoreaction rate. To resolve this, heterojunctions with different patterns, including Z and S schemes, showed great potential to enhance photoactivity and thus attracted increasing attention. Herein, we concisely reviewed recent progress in various types of such systems, focusing on the mechanistic understanding of clean energy and environmental applications. The principles of constructions based on optoelectronic properties and semiconducting behavior are comprehensively discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of each system are also considered to make a logical conclusion and inspirational perspectives

    No full text
In Italian and Italo-Romance dialects, the position of clitic pronouns in restructuring sentences is subject to variation. Like Italian, the northern, Tuscan, and median Italo-Romance dialects show both cliticization on the finite verb (clitic climbing) and enclisis on the infinitival verb, while the southern dialects have mandatory clitic climbing. Some differences between the AIS data, dating back to one century ago, and the contemporary dialectal data with regard to clitic climbing in northern dialects are attributed to the data collection methods and not to a recent diachronic change extending climbing towards the North. A new data collection method, specially designed to detect optionality, provides a more nuanced picture of language variation and suggests that the innovation of enclisis is starting to affect the southern Italo-Romance dialects

    Decolonizing Arabic Sociolinguistics

    Get PDF
What relation do we have to the communities we study? Do we observe and analyse while being totally uninvolved with their suffering and inequality? What responsibility do scholars in social science have towards their communities? Discourse analysts were faster than sociolinguists in dealing with these issues, even if their books are not necessarily read by the layperson. Critical sociolinguistics is concerned with inequality. It starts from the standpoint that members of different communities do not have access to resources in the same way

The Guantánamo Detention Camp and International Humanitarian Law

    No full text
Through the reconstruction of the policies of the U.S. Administrations that have followed one another over the years (2002-2024), this paper retraces two decades of gross human rights violations in the Guantánamo detention camp and aims to preserve the memory of one of the most shameful episodes in American history. The article is mainly based on the review of the legal provisions adopted by the U.S. government, as well as on U.S. court orders. Abducted, forcibly removed from their families, held incommunicado, tortured, the prisoners held in the facility remained for years awaiting trial or release. Some of them died during detention. Over two decades after 9/11, Guantánamo is still open, and a few dozen people are still detained there

The Laws of Ine. Report of a Digital Edition of a Renaissance Manuscript

    Get PDF
This report describes the implementation of a digital edition of the Laws of Ine as part of my MA final review. The text is handed down in London, British Library, Additional 43703, that was transcribed in 1562 by the English antiquarian Laurence Nowell. The Laws of Ine are an important juridical text for the Anglo-Saxon period and in the context of Tudor England for the creation of British identity. The objective is to demonstrate the usefulness of the digital medium for the enhancement of the historical dimension of the manuscript and the text. The edition has been implemented by using the visualization software Edition Visualization Technology (EVT) 1.3, whose advantages and disadvantages will be taken into consideration. Even if EVT 1.3 is outdated compared to its latest version (EVT 2), EVT 1.3 is versatile enough for the creation of digital editions with a low degree of complexity

Absorption and Theatricality in the Staging of Contempt: Flaubert, Baudelaire, Huysmans

Drawing on two categories suggested by art historian Michael Fried – absorption and theatricality –, this article suggest a specification relative to how we feel and express a particular emotion: contempt. To better understand the distinction between absorbed and distanced contempt, and all the emotional consequences that ensue, three specific and contrasting examples taken from Flaubert, Baudelaire and Huysmans are analysed here
