Anticancer Iron-Iridium Organometallic Conjugates
The diiron vinyliminium complexes [Fe2Cp2(CO)(μ-CO){μ-η1:η3-C(3-C5H4N)CHCN(R)(Me)}]CF3SO3 (Cp = η5-C5H5; R = 2,6-C6H3Me2 = Xyl, 2a, R = Me, 2b) reacted with [IrCp*(Phpy)Cl] (IrCl; Cp* = η5-C5Me5, Phpy = κN,κC-2-phenylpyridine) and AgCF3SO3 to afford the bis-cationic iron-iridium conjugates [Fe2Cp2(CO)(μ-CO){μ-η1:η3-C(3-C5H4NIrCp*Phpy)CHCN(Me)(R)}][CF3SO3]2 (4a-b), in nearly quantitative yields. Similarly, the reaction of the ferracyclic compound [FeCp(CO){CN(Me)(Xyl)CHC(3-C5H4N)C(═O)}] (3a) with [IrCp*(Phpy)Cl]/AgNO3 led to the monocationic species [FeCp(CO){CN(Me)(Xyl)CHC(3-C5H4NIrCp*Phpy)C((═O)}]NO3 (5a, 70% yield). The new complexes 4a-b and 5a were characterized by mass spectrometry, IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. NMR and DFT analyses indicate that they exist as pairs of diastereoisomers due to the chirality centers in the iron and iridium scaffolds, and that the coordination strength of the pyridyl ligand to iridium is comparable to that observed in the iridium-pyridine adduct [IrCp*(py)(Phpy)] (Irpy). The cytotoxicity of 4a-b and 5a was evaluated on cancer (A2780, A549, U87) and noncancerous (MRC-5) cell lines, with 5a exhibiting superior activity compared to cisplatin and Irpy, along with a tendency toward selectivity. The activity of 4a-b and 5a, which is significantly higher compared to their iron precursors, is associated with enhanced iridium uptake in cancer cells (aligning with lipophilicity, determined as Log Pow values), suppression of oxygen consumption rate and elevated ROS production

Interlaboratory comparison of continuous flow analysis (CFA) systems for high-resolution water isotope measurements in ice cores
The continuous flow analysis technique coupled with cavity ring-down spectrometry (CFA-CRDS) provides a method for high-resolution water isotope analysis of ice cores, which is essential for paleoclimatic reconstructions of local temperatures and regional atmospheric circulation. Compared to the traditional discrete method, CFA-CRDS significantly reduces analysis time. However, the effective resolution at which the isotopic signal can be retrieved from continuous measurements is influenced by system-induced mixing, which smooths the isotopic signal, and by measurement noise, which can further limit the resolution of the continuous record, introducing random fluctuations into the instrument’s signal output. This study compares three CFA-CRDS systems developed at Ca’ Foscari University (Venice), the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (Paris), and the Institut des Géosciences de l’Environnement (Grenoble) for firn core analysis. Continuous results are compared with discrete data to highlight the strengths and limitations of each system. A spectral analysis is also performed to quantify the impact of internal mixing on signal integrity and to determine the frequency limits imposed by measurement noise. These findings establish the effective resolution limits for retrieving isotopic signals from firn cores. Finally, we discuss critical system configurations and procedural optimisations that enhance the accuracy and resolution of water isotope analysis in ice cores
Supramolecular interactions in softwood kraft lignin nanoparticles
The production of functional (nano)materials based on lignin as a renewable starting material depends on the thorough understanding of lignin’s physico-chemical properties, among which self-assembly and agglomeration/aggregation are the most important. Nevertheless, the knowledge about the structure-property relations for lignin is still in its infancy and needs further in-depth investigations. In this context, this works focuses on the study of the size and the colloidal stability of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) prepared from softwood kraft lignin (SKL) using the solvent-antisolvent method. Conformational rearrangements of lignin chains were found to contribute significantly to the formation of the first lignin nuclei. The slow addition of ethylene glycol and THF into water caused the formation of nuclei with low aggregation numbers, minimizing the hydrodynamic volume of the final LNPs. On the other hand, a quick addition of these organic solvents created spatially and temporally higher lignin concentrations, yielding nuclei with high aggregation numbers and larger hydrodynamic volumes. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the major role of intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds in this process, together with the contribution from π-π stacking interactions. The superficial concentration of phenolic and condensed guaiacyl units was found to strongly influence the corresponding LNPs’ zeta-potential values. Altogether, these results shed further light on the properties of colloidal lignin with a view to enabling its full potential as a key material for technological applications

Dynamics of multimorbidity, health expectancy, and survival in middle aged and older individuals
Background: Life expectancy has increased, but such increase has disproportionally expanded the period of life with diseases. Whether expanding health expectancy (HE), defined as years of life free of chronic diseases, could also affect rate of multimorbidity accumulation is uncertain. Objective: to investigate the dynamic relationship between HE and rate of multimorbidity accumulation and their impact on survival. Methods: Four thousand two hundred seventy-four (3511 > 50 years) participants from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), healthy at baseline and developing at least one disease overtime were included. Mean baseline age was 55.1 years and average follow-up was 9.4 years. Multimorbidity was operationalized as count of diagnosed diseases from a list of nine chronic conditions. HE was operationalized as years from birth until when the first disease was ascertained, and percentage of life in good health calculated as percentage of life lived free of chronic diseases. Mixed models investigated the association between HE and rate of multimorbidity accumulation, while survival analyses evaluated association with time to death. Results: HE were positively associated with multimorbidity rate (P < .001). Shorter HE and faster multimorbidity rate were independently associated with higher mortality (P < .001). Their interaction was negatively associated with mortality (P < .001). Results were confirmed restricting the analysis to individuals 51 or older and using HRS specific weights. Individuals with longer HE experienced a greater survival, almost regardless of multimorbidity rate, while a positive gradient was found in percentage of life in good health linked to multimorbidity rate. Conclusions: Expanding health expectancy is likely followed by compression of morbidity
