Regulatory preparedness for multicomponent nanomaterials: Current state, gaps and challenges of REACH
In 2018 the European Commission adopted revisions to the Annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals (REACH) to introduce nanomaterial- specific clarifications and provisions. Multicomponent nanomaterial (MCNM) is a non-regulatory term that has been used in recent EU-funded projects to describe nanomaterials with a complex structure and/or composition and which are expected to be increasingly used in products in the near future. This paper examines the regulatory preparedness of REACH, and its revised Annexes, for MCNMs. Several situations have been identified where there is potential confusion and uncertainty around how regulatory definitions used in REACH should be applied to MCNMs. If a MCNM cannot be identified as falling within a specific definition, understanding the regulatory obligations that apply to it is very difficult. Examples of these grey areas include how the term “surface functionalisation or modification” applies when a chemical is physisorbed to the surface of a nanoform, and the identity of the substance that should be registered when the modification takes it outside the definition of a nanoform. We conclude that the regulatory preparedness can be improved by amending the REACH guidance on information requirements for nanoforms and revising the definition of “nanoform” in line with the updated EC Recommendation on the definition of nanomaterial
Verso un progresso morale possibile. Il ruolo dell’educazione morale
This paper examines the potential of character education to foster moral progress in a rapidly changing world. While the concept of moral progress has faced challenges, recent scholarship has renewed interest in this crucial area. Neo-Aristotelian approaches to character education aim to cultivate virtuous individuals. However, concerns arise regarding potential limitations, such as the risk of indoctrination and the perpetuation of a static moral framework. This paper argues for a character education approach that balances stability and flexibility. By emphasizing the development of practical wisdom as the core of virtuous character, this approach encourages individuals to navigate diverse moral contexts and contribute to meaningful social change. This necessitates a focus on inter-situational virtuous conduct, including exposure to a range of real and hypothetical scenarios, to cultivate ethical expertise and foster a dynamic and responsive moral character

Our Fruitful Relationship with Sugeno Inference, from FUMOSO to pyFUME
Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) effectively model and reason
with complex and uncertain information in an interpretable, understand-
able, and transparent way. Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) is one of the most
widespread types of FIS, appreciated for its ability to output crisp values
by leveraging linear models as consequents. In this tribute to Prof. Sugeno,
we discuss our previous works based on TSK inference. In particular,
we focus on pyFUME, a Python library for automatically estimating
first-order TSK FIS from data. We introduce a relevant advancement
in pyFUME, i.e., the ability to handle categorical variables within the
consequents, which significantly enhances the model’s performance in
regression and classification tasks. This improved version completes the
foundation for pyFUME to handle mixed-type data. Our results on three
diverse datasets show the capabilities of our method, which performs
better than the previous implementation
Assessment of the Hydrogen Production Potential in a Zeolite Assisted Two-Phase Dark and Photo-Fermentation Process from Urban Waste Mixture
Waste-based sustainable solutions proposed by scientific and industrial communities for energy production are an approach that can respond to the growing concerns regarding climate change and fossil resources depletion. This study investigates a two-phase bioprocess combining dark fermentation (DF) and photo-fermentation (PF) to enhance hydrogen yield while anaerobically treating urban organic food waste and sewage sludge. A key objective was to assess the effect of waste composition and temperature on hydrogen accumulation, with particular attention to the fermentation product and the role of zeolite in improving process efficiency. In the DF stage, the addition of zeolite significantly enhanced hydrogen production by increasing microbial activity and improving substrate bioavailability. As a result, hydrogen production increased up to 27.3 mmol H2/(L d) under thermophilic conditions. After the suspended solids were removed from the dark fermentation broth, a photo-fermentation step driven by a pure strain of Rhodopseudomonas palustris was performed under permanent IR light and different substrate-to-inoculum [S/I] ratios. The maximum hydrogen production rate was 9.33 mmol H2/(L d), when R. palustris was inoculated at the lowest [S/I] ratio (<20 COD/COD) and with 0.5 g VSS/L as the initial concentration. This condition in the photo-fermentation process led to an increase in the hydrogen yield up to 35% compared to values obtained from dark fermentation alone
Unloving Mothers: Jesuit Knowledge Production on Abortion and Infanticide in Japan in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries*
This article analyses the references to local practices of abortion and infanticide by the Japanese mission of the Society of Jesus between the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, as a case study of Jesuit knowledge production on the country. Albeit described as common, allusions to such condemned practices in Jesuit literature were scant. This article dissects them to understand how the missionaries perceived these practices, and how and why they identified different causes in the narratives they sent to Europe, of socio-economic and religious natures. It then illustrates the European-Catholic background and practical reasons why such Jesuit narratives coalesced, first, in a depiction of Japanese mothers as unable to love, and then as embodying wrong practices of love for their children
Patriarch Kallistos I as a spiritual author*
The article is dedicated to Patriarch Kallistos I as a spiritual author. First and foremost, he shows himself to be a faithful interpreter of the established tradition, with an evident predilection for certain authors and works, particularly John Climacus. On the other hand, the presence and influence of the teachings of his master, Gregory of Sinai are undoubtedly recognizable. Kallistos amplified and took up some elements, while he reorganized, or at least apparently ignored others absolutely central (prayer techniques). Kallistos' work is also an important, and almost isolated, testimony to the continuity of composition of ascetical-spiritual texts in the first generation of the school of Gregory the Sinaite. The appendix presents the edition, accompanied by the translation of two discourses of Kallistos I on submission and obedience
