“Second Language Teaching with Refugees: Educational Experiences and Welcoming Environments”
This qualitative research aims to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between previous schooling experiences and second language learning among a group of adult refugees and asylum seekers. Refugees and asylum seekers present unique challenges to educators in host countries. Issues related to forced migration, low literacy levels, cultural estrangement are among the many challenges encountered (Shapiro et al., 2019). These multiple small case studies were conducted at a school in Northern Italy. The paper examines the refugees' educational histories and explores how humanizing teaching practices can facilitate both teaching and learning (Freire, 1970/2018; Pasquarella et al., 2022). Through one-on-one interviews and a focus group, the authors found that the refugees’ educational backgrounds were markedly different. The analysis reveals that previous schooling experiences and challenging living conditions shaped the refugees' attitudes toward education. Despite these challenges, participants affirmed that the humanistic approach adopted by the teachers was effective in alleviating the anxieties and fears about language learning of many refugees, helping to bridge an important gap in language teaching across cultures
Detection of Read-Write Issues in Hyperledger Fabric Smart Contracts
Hyperledger Fabric is a well-known framework for developing enterprise blockchain solutions. Developers of these blockchains must ensure the correct execution of read and write operations so that the smart contracts’ application logic is consistent with the business logic. In this paper, we present a static analysis approach based on abstract interpretation to detect read-write set issues in Hyperledger Fabric smart contracts and avoid bugs and critical errors that could compromise blockchain applications. The analysis is implemented in GoLiSA, a semantics-based static analyzer for Go applications. Our experimental results show that the proposed analysis can detect read-write set issues on a significant benchmark of existing applications. Moreover, it achieves better results in detecting read after-write issues than other well-known open-source analyzers for Hyperledger Fabric smart contracts
"Come dono prezioso": Verucchio per l'archeologia italica. Scritti offerti a Patrizia von Eles
suoi studi hanno costituito infatti un caposaldo per la conoscenza della Romagna dell’età del Ferro, per la metodologia dell’indagine archeologica e per le
prospettive di valorizzazione rivolte al pubblico
A Roman Period Sewn Ship discovered off the Lido of Venice (Lido 1)
This work presents a study of certain fragments of a ship, built using the
sewn-technique of ship-construction, clear evidence of which has been
found in the North Adriatic Sea and dates from the Roman Period: these
fragments were recovered between 1993 and 2022 along the seashore of
Alberoni Beach, on the island of ‘Lido of Venice’. The specific context of
these discovered fragments, which are believed to belong to the same
shipwreck (called Lido 1), the analysis of the technical details, and the
results of the dendrochronological analysis permitting the tree
ring dating of these wooden finds, are presented here together with the
new documentation method using an Artec Eva laser scanner
Water Transit Time Explains the Concentration, Quality and Reactivity of Dissolved Organic Carbon in an Alpine Stream
The amount and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) exported from terrestrial to riverine ecosystems are critical factors influencing aquatic metabolism and ecosystem health in streams, rivers, and lakes. This study investigates the interplay between hydrologic conditions and DOC dynamics in an alpine catchment, focusing on how DOC concentration and quality shift during baseflow, snowmelt, and storm events. Such dynamics were explored in the Oberer Seebach basin (Austria) where sub-daily DOC concentration data, along with high resolution excitation-emission matrices and absorbance spectra, were used to characterize DOC concentration and quality. We quantitatively linked hydrologic pathways with DOC dynamics by advancing a framework that couples water age, which tracks the time water spends within the catchment, with the Reactivity Continuum model, which quantifies the evolution of DOC reactivity and ensuing concentration. Results show that simulating both water age and DOC reactivity effectively reproduces DOC concentrations and reveals a correlation between modeled reactivity and observed DOC quality indices. During snowmelt and storm events, rapid hydrologic pathways transport reactive DOC with a quality profile similar to that of freshly formed terrestrial DOC, while during baseflow, slower pathways carry less reactive DOC with a signature of preceding degradation processes. These findings shed light on the role of catchment hydrology in carbon cycling and on its implications for riverine ecosystem functioning
Social capital and vaccination compliance: Evidence from Italy
Exploiting high-frequency vaccination data for COVID-19 and social capital measures at the municipal level in Italy between January and October 2021, this paper estimates the effect of social capital on vaccination compliance. We find that weekly vaccination coverage increased up to 1.60 percentage points more in municipalities with higher social capital. Results do not differ by gender and the effect is mainly driven by younger generations. Our findings shed light on the role of social capital as a driver of health protective behavior
Douglas Gale's contribution to bargaining and markets
This short piece reviews some of the seminal contributions by Douglas Gale to
the study of decentralized markets, both with symmetric information and with
adverse selection. A key driver of Gale s interest in these themes was the aim to
provide non cooperative foundations to competitive markets. The goal of this
piece is not to provide a comprehensive survey, but to highlight some key insights
and results in Gale s work in this area and to emphasize their relationship with
the subsequent developments in the literature on decentralized markets and its
various applications to OTC markets, labor markets, money and more
Consumer ODR in the European Union. A Critical Assessment
This article adopts a pragmatic approach to assess the influence of EU Regulation No. 524/20136, which addresses ODR in the context of consumer disputes, and explores its broader implications. The goal is not only to evaluate the regulation’s current impact but alsoto reflect on the still untapped potential of ODR. The paper offers suggestions for the effective implementation of ODR legislation, drawing from the experiences—both successes and challenges— of several European countrie
