Joan Brossa, Un viaggio nell'ignoto.
Social media discussions anticipates financial market volumes
The role of social media platforms, where opinions form and are shared, in stock market movements is becoming increasingly important. Several past studies have demonstrated the predictive power of web-based information analysis on investor sentiment and opinion. This paper analyzes the present relationship between discussions on X (previously known as Twitter) and market movements. Additionally, we contribute to the existing body of knowledge by introducing novel approaches grounded in information theory. Through empirical analysis and advanced statistical techniques, our study sheds light on the continued influence of social media sentiment on stock price returns, providing valuable insights for investors and market analysts navigating the complexities of modern financial markets
Lessons from complex networks to smart cities
A smart city is an urban area that uses technology, data and digital infrastructure to improve the quality of life for its citizens, enhance the efficiency of city services and promote sustainability. Complex networks can enable the extraction of useful information from technologies, such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and big data analytics, in a comprehensive way. This would enable common urban challenges, such as traffic congestion, pollution, waste management and energy usage, to be addressed. Network theory offers a strong framework for analyzing and visualizing complex relationships in urban environments, including transportation, social interactions and infrastructure. This interdisciplinary approach aids in comprehensive city modeling and serves as a vital tool for policymakers to improve the robustness and resilience of urban landscapes
On the scaling of river network biogeochemical function
River networks play a fundamental biogeochemical role in the Earth system by transporting and processing materials from terrestrial to ocean ecosystems. The cumulative biogeochemical function of a watershed of area A can broadly be referred to as the total processing rate of material performed by its river network. An important recent research, conducted through network simulations, has revealed that the biogeochemical function of rivers can scale superlinearly with the area A under certain scenarios. This finding has significant implications for the role of river networks in regional and global biogeochemical cycles. Here, we demonstrate how such scaling can be derived analytically by combining the power law distribution of drainage area, the universal fractal signature of river networks and the scaling of channel hydraulic geometry, utilising the theory of finite-size scaling. The results enable the discrimination between linear and superlinear behaviours, as well as the calculation of the exact exponent based on parameters that define how the biogeochemical function and the river width change with river drainage area. Furthermore, we investigate the difference between the scaling of the biogeochemical function with the area of the watershed (Formula presented.) and with the area of a region drained by multiple river networks, emphasising the implications for upscaling efforts
Gonzalo de Riancho: un cómico novohispano en perspectiva global
This paper addresses two essential aspects regarding the life of the Novo-Hispanic theatre director (autor de comedias) Gonzalo de Riancho. On the one hand, his relationship with the Mexico City Council in 1595, when he signed an exclusivity contract, which included an annual salary, with this institution. On the other hand, his involvement in the establishment of the city’s first performance spaces. The career of this comedian will be observed from a global perspective, that is, trying to understand how his work is inserted in the set of experiments, achievements, and failures, which led, at different times and in various contexts, to the professionalization of theatre in the territories of imperial Spain
From Viewers to Buyers: Drivers of Customer Engagement in E-Commerce Livestreaming
This study investigates the drivers of customer engagement in e-commerce livestreaming,
examining the roles of livestreamer attributes and of community support. With data from 532 Chinese
livestreaming customers, we examine the effects of livestreamer credibility and attractiveness, together
with informational and emotional support from the community, on customer engagement. Findings
reveal that livestreamer credibility is the only positive driver of customer engagement. Emotional
support from the community reduces engagement. Livestreamer attractiveness and credibility enhance
emotional and informational support within the community, respectively, but neither type of support
positively influences customer engagement. These results challenge assumptions about the uniformly
beneficial nature of community interactions and underscore the pivotal role of livestreamer credibility
in driving engagement. The study contributes to theoretical frameworks on customer engagement and
on source credibility models offering actionable insights for e-commerce livestreaming platforms
Landraces, Crop Improvement, and the Politics of Food Security
Governments, nongovernmental actors, and producers all regard the return to landraces as a potential answer to the challenge of securing food production in an increasingly unstable environment. The development of a market for historic breeds of wheat in contemporary Italy illustrates and illuminates the complexity of the challenge. The work of improving such breeds to meet this challenge takes diverse forms, ranging from a focus on the attributes of a particular breed to how the same breed reproduces in the individual producer’s field. Such diversity of forms produces a slippage between definitions of a landrace that attend to the characteristics of a particular plant population and those that attend instead to the historical and geographical processes involved in the formation of these same populations. The slippage opens a space for a variety of models of food production, which all use landraces but engage with consumers differently. Mobilizing landraces as plant populations enables agricultural and food producers to work with consumers as more or less active participants in the process of production, even as coproducers. In the process, the relationship between agricultural production and food consumption is transformed at a variety of scales, from global to local
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis for Managing Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) in USA: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) vs Standard of Care (SoC)
Purpose: Chronic skin ulcers in diabetic foot patients are a significant health concern. Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) significantly threaten the health and longevity of individuals with diabetes, leading to severe complications like infection and amputation and contributing to high morbidity and mortality rates. Given the severe implications, practical strategies to prevent and manage DFUs are crucial to reducing amputation rates. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a popular treatment option due to its properties that mimic the body’s natural healing process. The objective of the study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of PRPR vs standard of care in US context.
Methods: Decision analytical model was used to synthesize clinical and economic parameters. In detail a CEA analysis was employed using a Markov decision-making model to evaluate patients with chronic DFUs lasting over three weeks and at high risk for orthopedic complications. The study assessed the effectiveness of different treatments, measured in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and reported costs in 2023 dollars using a micro-costing approach alongside a clinical trial.
Results: The study concluded that PRP gel is a cost-effective treatment for non-healing DFUs, resulting in lower care costs over one year compared to other treatments and cost savings over five years.
Conclusion: Thus, PRP treatment is a promising and practical option, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. It is an attractive choice for healthcare providers and insurers in managing non-healing diabetic foot ulcers
