Video-Game Agents with Human-Like Behavior Using DQN and Biological Constraints
Video game agents that surpass humans always select the optimal behavior, which may make them look mechanical and uninteresting to human players and audience. Since score-oriented game agents have been almost achieved, a next goal should be to entertain human players and audience by realizing agents that reproduce human-like behavior. A previous method implemented such game agents by introducing biological constraints into Q-learning and A^* search. In this paper, we propose video game agents with more entertaining and more practical human-like behavior by applying biological constraints into the deep Q-network (DQN). Especially, to reduce the problem of the conspicuous mechanical behavior found in the previous method, we improve the method of the biological constraint “tired”, and propose additional biological constraints “confusion” and “carelessness”. We implemented our method in the video game “Infinite Mario Bros.” and conducted two types of experiments that were subjective evaluation. One is to evaluate the behavior of game agents that improved “tired”. The other is to evaluate the behavior of game agents that introduced “confusion” and “carelessness” The results of both experiments indicated that the agents implemented with our method were rated more human-like than those implemented with the previous method
STUDY ON SCALABLE DESIGN METHOD OF eVTOL AIRCRAFT FOR URBAN AIR MOBILITY
In recent years, the development of Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) has been heating up. Because of the novelty of the concept, form of eVTOL aircrafts have not been fixed yet. Wide variety of models have been proposed and their designs are becoming crowded. In the future, this situation may hinder standardization, development, and safety certification of eVTOL aircrafts even though they are necessary for social implementation of UAM. In this study, with the intention of future construction of lucid design architecture that captures various size of aircraft, several conceptual designs of eVTOL aircraft for UAM have been made with a focus on scalability. In addition, feasibility and practicality of the aircrafts and the method used have been considered
A STUDY OF EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS FOR SMALL DIESEL ENGINE BY USING ETHANOL INJECTION INTO THE INTAKE PIPE
This study aimed to reduce combustion products by injecting an aqueous ethanol solution into the intake pipe of a small diesel engine. The research is focused on the effects of ethanol solution concentration, intake tract temperature, injection pressure, engine load, and injection position on combustion products. As a result, NOx reduction was possible by injecting aqueous ethanol solution into the intake tract, with a maximum reduction of about 40%. Furthermore, it was confirmed that optimal values for concentration and temperature exist, that atomization of the spray is important, and that the effective location of the spray depends on the concentration
FUNDAMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF PARTICLES STRUCTURE IN SLURRIES BY USING PARALLEL PLATE ROTATIONAL VISCOMETER
It is difficult to estimate particles structure such as particle/aggregate size in slurries by using conventional rheological measurement. Thus, in this study, we tried to estimate the particle/aggregate size and the network structure size in various slurries by using a parallel plate rotational viscometer. We measured not only the flow curve but also the normal stress acting on the plate when changing the gap between the plate and the stage. It was suggested that the normal stress drastically increased when the gap reached at the particle/aggregate size even though the quantitative explanation of the measured size is insufficient. For the slurries with yield stress in their flow curves, it was demonstrated that the yield stress increased with an increase in the gap between the plate and the stage, and the increasing rate was changed by slurry preparation condition
FERMI ENERGY DEPENDENCE OF OXYGEN/WATER CO-ADSORPTION EFFECTS ON MoS_2
The adsorption of oxygen molecules at high partial pressures on MoS_2, one of the two-dimensional materials, induces hole doping, the rate of which depends on the Fermi energy E_F of MoS_2. This is explained by the electrochemical processes in charge doping with water molecules, where the doping rate depends on the partial pressure of oxygen and water. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of oxygen and water molecules were comprehensively investigated with modulating E_F by applying a gate voltage to MoS_2 during the gas exposure
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARATION OF CAMERA-READY MANUSCRIPTS FOR BULLETIN OF GRADUATE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, ENGINEERING STUDIES
In the field of autonomous mobile robotics, reliable localization performance is essential. However, there are real environments where localization is a failure. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating localizability based on occupancy grid maps. Localizability indicates the reliability of localization. There are several approaches to estimate localizability, and we propose a method using local map correlations. The covariance matrix of the Gaussian distribution from local map correlations is used to estimate localizability. In this way, we can estimate the magnitude of the localization error and the characteristics of the error. The experiment confirmed the characteristics of the distribution of correlations for each location on occupancy grid maps. And the localizability of the whole map was estimated using an occupancy grid map containing a vast and complex. The simulation experiment results showed that the proposed method could estimate localization error and the characteristics of the error on occupancy grid maps. The proposed method was confirmed to be effective in estimating localizability
POLARIZATION ROTATOR INDEPENDENT OF INCIDENT POLARIZATION PLANE OPERATING OVER A WIDE WAVELENGTH RANGE
A polarization rotator (PR) is analyzed by the imaginary-distance beam-propagation method based on Yee’s mesh and the finite-difference time-domain method. The PR is developed for wideband characteristics and independence of incident polarization plane. Calculations regarding the period length of the structure show that the propagation constant difference has an extreme value with the wavelength change. Therefore, changing the thickness of the structure leads to a phase difference close to π over a wide wavelength range. By adjusting the extreme of the propagation constant difference, the PR achieves 90° polarization rotation while maintaining linear polarization over a wide wavelength range
A BIO-INSPIRED SOFT ROBOT THAT USES FEATURES OF IT’S ENVIRONMENT TO LOCOMOTE OVER A HORIZONTAL PLANE : AUTOMATION OF OPERATIONS IN SERTAIN ENVIRONMENTS
General control methods for robots are effective in factory environments where there are no changes in the environment. But, control is difficult at disaster sites where the environment is unknown and subject to change. However, in nature, organisms with small brains are able to live in complex environments because they are able to utilize their own physical characteristics to reduce the burden on their brains. In this study, we developed a bio-mimetic soft robot that grasps and propels a protruding object only by pulling and loosening a string with a single actuator. In previous studies, bio-mimetic soft robots that grasp and propel protrusions were developed. In order to solve the problem of difficulty in operability, we attempted to automate the operation of the robot
An Explainable Poor Image Notification Framework for the Visually Impaired
We propose a framework for image caption generation that is capable of determining image quality and providing a basis for such determination. The core of our framework is an image quality judgment model that incorporates multi-task learning and achieves practical scores by predicting multiple defects simultaneously. We also confirmed that using this framework to remove low-quality images improves caption generation scores in a general image caption generation task. This proposal is expected to assist visually impaired people who have difficulty judging the image quality
The Shihoro Mountain Road Construction Project and the Opposition Movement for Nature Conservation
This paper examines the Shihoro Mountain Road project in the Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan, and the nature conservation movement opposing it.The Shihoro Mountain Road was approved as a national park road by the national park authorities in 1965. In 1971, when the road construction reached the mountainous area of the national park, the destruction of nature became so noticeable that the residents protested against the construction, which was then halted by the Governor of Hokkaido in 1972, leaving 2.6km uncompleted. In 1987, the Resort Development Law was enacted, which triggered a tourist boom, causing the Governor of Hokkaido to declare a resumption of construction. Preparations were made to resume work, but in order to protect the precious natural environment, a campaign against resumption of the construction was launched. The Hokkaido authorities then altered the plan to construct the entire road as a tunnel to avoid destruction of the natural environment, this plan being approved by the Environment Agency in 1995.However, protesters continued to oppose the plan, claiming that the tunnel would also have a negative impact on the natural environment. The opposition movement filed a lawsuit to suspend the construction to ensure biodiversity, with the prospect of winning the trial. The governor of Hokkaido announced in 1999 that the construction work would be cancelled because he was likely to lose the lawsuit. The road construction plan officially approved by the Environment Agency and completed halfway was forced into cancellation by the nature conservation movement, making this a rare and valuable case for the movement against development projects in national parks
