The Social Participation Development for Individuals with Unilateral and Bilateral Lower Extremity Amputation
This occupation-based program aims to help maintain and increase social participation for individuals with unilateral or bilateral lower extremity amputations. It was developed with an occupational therapy (OT) lens targeting adults with a lower limb amputation with a population of various ages (18-70), genders, and causes of injury to develop an occupation-based program with an OT focus. Individuals living with amputation often experience hardship when developing crucial ADL/IADL skills that can be vital for social participation regardless of age or cause of injury. This program focuses on developing social participation skills lost due to decreased functional mobility and skills caused by amputation and looks at the improvements made through occupational therapy interventions. It provides activity adaptation, prosthesis education, and mental health promotion. The program outcomes involve a needs assessment, the development of a program manual, the program implementation, and a data analysis. The significance is to educate and train amputees on daily life skills, prosthetic use, social techniques, pain strategies, and exercise training. In summary, this amputee program aims to bridge the literature gap in understanding an amputee’s challenges through developing an OT-focused program to enhance their social participation, ultimately improving their quality of life.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1063/thumbnail.jp

This research looks at the occupational impacts of seizure disorders on the adolescent population. The research study explores how their condition impacts the adolescent and family unit. Consideration of Language, Culture-Education, and Advocacy for Latino Families Who Use Therapy Services
Latino families of children with ASD face additional barriers within society compared to other families, including surrounding stigma within the culture, language barriers, lack of resources, and lack of education on how to access these resources. One of the focuses of occupational therapy is to provide education and advocacy to individuals and their families who face occupational barriers. Dance for Sensory Regulation to Increase Positive Classroom Behaviors
Children have a primary occupation of play; however, children who are of elementary school age, 5-11 years old, also have a primary occupation of education. Through literature reviews, it has been found that dance can increase positive classroom behaviors such as creativity, classroom participation, and emotional regulation. A needs assessment was completed to gather a baseline of classroom behavior and information regarding the target population. Based on responses from the needs assessment, this program was curated for first-grade, second-grade, and third-grade classes. Classroom teachers completed a pre-survey related to student behaviors in the classroom, such as before and after physical education class, as well as the number of breaks needed throughout the lessons. Teachers reported that students required increased redirection before attending physical education class and returning to class. A dance was implemented in physical education class several times a week for 7 weeks. Students were also provided cool-down strategies when feeling different emotions throughout the day. Post-implementation surveys determined that students responded well to the program, demonstrating decreased need for redirection, thus preparing them for success in their learning. Students also demonstrated a desire to participate in dance instruction and reported the use of cool-down strategies in class when feeling as though they needed a break.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1012/thumbnail.jp
Improving Patient Awareness and Compliance with Telephone Follow-up Calls Post Visit
Practice Problem: In a high-volume clinic without current follow up practices post visit, a telephone follow-up (TFU) intervention was implemented within three days of patient outpatient appointments.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In adult patients in a high-volume clinic (P), does the implementation of telephone follow-up calls by nurses (I) compared to current practices (C) improve patient compliance and post-office follow-up visits (O) over 10-weeks (T)?
Evidence: The literature provided recommendations and evidence that supported the effectiveness of following up with patients within three days of leaving the healthcare clinic. TFU’s are a cost-effective intervention that provides opportunities for patient education, improvements in patient compliance and reduction of adverse events.
Intervention: Nurses utilized a TFU checklist where they assessed patient compliance and awareness with individualized care plan, required lab work, medication, diet and exercise regimen prior to their follow up visit.
Outcome: The Fisher’s exact test was not significant based at an alpha value of .05, OR = 0.00, p = 1.00. However, clinical significance was found because of the increase in patients attending follow-up clinic visits.
Conclusion: The implementation of TFU within three days of patient outpatient visit resulted in 83% of patient’s verbalizing awareness of their individual care plan and 88% of patients attending their follow up visit
Summer Vacation: An OT Program to Address Social Participation
This project aimed to develop asix-week program that addresses the development of social skills during summer vacation for children and adolescents who demonstrate difficulties with social engagement. Student Perception and Knowledge of Team Science Following an Interprofessional Learning Module
Introduction: Online interprofessional active learning experiences can provide health care students the opportunity to develop their skills in teamwork, communication, collaboration, and ethics with low financial burden and space cost to the institution. The purpose of this qualitative report was twofold. First, to assess the impact of an interprofessional education module on students’ knowledge and understanding of team science. Second, to provide insight regarding students’ perceptions of the module’s effectiveness in supporting their development as evidence-based professionals who collaboratively provide person-centered care. Data were collected anonymously via online surveys (pre- and post-module) and served as part of a program review process. This paper provides insight regarding students’ perceptions of an interprofessional module’s effectiveness in supporting development of evidence-based professionals who collaboratively provide person-centered care. Methods: Pre- and post-module survey responses from 11 interprofessional students were randomly reviewed by faculty from different health sciences disciplines. The responses were thematically analyzed using a qualitative research approach. Intercoder agreement (80%) was sought for codes and categories that emerged from the responses. Results: Results from the thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses revealed four major themes: 1) team science supports collaboration on a common goal, 2) differences do exist between practice-based evidence and evidence-based practice, 3) addressing social determinates of health to meet individual needs is important, and 4) measurable, realistic, and attainable research questions are valuable. Discussion: Students’ perceptions supported that participation in the module was a viable mechanism by which to promote knowledge of the team science approach in our interprofessional learning community.

Patellofemoral Pain: Correlations between Hip Strength, Pain Severity, and Function
Introduction: Patellofemoral pain is a common condition that results in anterior knee pain and frequently affects a wide range of the population, from adolescents to older adults. The etiology of patellofemoral pain is multifactorial and usually results in peripatellar or retropatellar pain. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a correlation exists between the strength of the posterolateral hip musculature and the severity of pain or level of function experienced by individuals with patellofemoral pain. Methods: The participants rated pain and functional levels with the Numeric Pain Rating Scale and the Lower Extremity Functional Scale, respectively. The strength of the participants’ posterolateral hip musculature was assessed with a handheld dynamometer. This study used a quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational design to determine the nature of the correlations between these variables. Results: A total of 30 participants met the inclusion criteria and participated in the study. Posterolateral hip strength and pain severity ratings were found to be significantly negatively correlated at the .05 level, r (28) = -.375, p=.041. Posterolateral hip strength and the participants\u27 level of function were significantly positively correlated at the .01 level, r (28) = .541, p = .002. Pain severity ratings and the participants\u27 level of function were also significantly negatively correlated at the .001 level, r (28) = - .526, p = .003. Discussion: Due to the multifactorial nature of PFP, the most evidence-based treatment approach is a thorough assessment followed by the development and implementation of an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan. Based on the findings of the study, however, weakness of the posterolateral hip musculature may indeed be present in a significant percentage of individuals with PFP.
