These women often face significant barriers to engaging in daily activities crucial for their health, well-being, and overall life satisfaction. The project aims to equip OT practitioners with the tools and strategies necessary to address the complex needs of this population, particularly in areas such as activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), work, education, home management, parenting, and leisure.
By utilizing evidence-based practices and trauma-informed care, the project emphasizes the importance of occupational engagement as a pathway to recovery and empowerment for these women. Additionally, it addresses the need for OT practitioners to prioritize self-care to prevent secondary trauma and burnout, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of their work within shelter environments. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Justice-Involved Individuals and Executive Function Consequences on Transition and Reintegration into the Community
Get PDFThe United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world (Carson, 2022), with an increasing number of justice-involved individuals (JII) potentially affected by mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Despite the high prevalence of mTBIs in the general population, limited research exists on the prevalence and impact of mTBIs in JII. Preliminary evidence suggests that the prevalence of mTBIs in incarcerated individuals is 50 times higher than in the general public (Siegler et al., 2017). This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of JII with mTBI, focusing on the origin of mTBIs, executive dysfunction, and the occupational barriers faced during the transition and reentry process. A mixed-methods, descriptive phenomenological approach was utilized to capture data from six study participants who were formerly incarcerated. Quantitative measures included demographics, comorbidity and social determinants of health survey (SDoH), the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ), and the Executive Skills Profile (ESP). Qualitative data was gathered via the Ohio State University Traumatic Brain Injury Identifier (OSU TBI-ID) and a 15-question semi-structured interview. Results indicate that JII experience several compounding disparities including socioeconomic status, comorbidities, and social determinants of health that are further exacerbated by persistent post-concussional symptoms and executive dysfunctions. This research demonstrated how mTBI and associated executive dysfunction complicate interactions for both those who have the injury and for professionals in the criminal legal system. Ultimately, it is in the best interest of all parties involved to create a justice system that is responsive and inclusive to mTBI
Increasing Awareness of the Effectiveness of Occupational Therapy in Cancer Rehabilitation
Get PDFMany cancer survivors are faced with functional limitations when engaging in meaningful occupations due to side effects such as anxiety, pain, fatigue, weakness, nausea, etc. from receiving cancer treatments which can impact their quality of life. Occupational therapy has a significant role in supportive care for cancer survivors by providing occupation-based interventions that focus on maximizing function and mitigating functional decline. However, occupational therapy is underutilized in cancer care due to patients\u27 lack of awareness of the role of OT and how it can improve quality of life after receiving cancer treatment. Therefore, this capstone project took place in Tallahassee, Florida at Be Strong Therapy Rehabilitation clinic and Allegro Senior Living facility focused on highlighting the need for occupational therapy to be utilized more effectively in cancer care. This project aimed to provide education to cancer survivors, or anyone interested in learning more about OT in cancer care through an educational session and providing educational materials such as a PowerPoint presentation and pamphlets. Additionally, pre-and post-surveys were administered to evaluate participants’ level of knowledge regarding OT in cancer care before and after attending the educational session. By increasing awareness of occupational therapy in cancer care, OT may be effectively utilized more in cancer care to continue helping survivors meet their occupational needs.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesfall2024/1047/thumbnail.jp

This study examines perceived quality of life in ALS clients before and after an in-person exercise program and home exercise program to evaluate the benefits of exercise as exercise does not exacerbate symptoms of ALS (Meng et al., 2020).
