    北海道羅臼町で収容ざれたケアシノスリから得られた寄生虫

    ArticleA young male Rough-legged Buzzard, Buteo lagopus, was found debilitated at Rausu, Hokkaido, Japan on 16 December, 2013 and died shortly after transport to the shelter. A post-mortem revealed emaciation, chest pressure ulceration, sternal fracture, and claw damage suggesting the malnutrition. Nematodes of Capillariidae gen. sp. and Porrocaecum sp., and cestode of Cyclophyllidea fam. gen. sp. were detected in the alimentary tract. Also chewing lice, Degeeriella fulva, were found on the body surface. This is the first record of D. fulva from B. lagopus in eastern Hokkaido, and the first record of Capillariidae gen. sp. and Cyclophyllidea fam. gen. sp. from B. lagopus in Japan.2013年12月16日に北海道羅臼町で回収されたケアシノスリの剖検と寄生虫検査を実施した。当該個体は重度削痩し右趾爪の欠損と胸骨骨折、胸部に褥瘡が認められたため,餌が十分に捕れず衰弱死したと考えられた。また消化管から線虫Porrocaeucum sp.および毛細線虫科の1種、属種不明四葉目条虫、体表からハジラミDegeeriella fulvaが得られた。D. fulvaは道東から初めて記録され、また毛細線虫科線虫および四葉目条虫は日本でケアシノスリから初めて記録された。journal articl

    Soil map derived from survey on depth of upper boundary of peat layer and parent material of upper layer in Moto-Nopporo Farm

    BulletinA soil map was drawn in Moto-Nopporo Farm of Rakuno Gakuen Field Education and Research Center. Moto-Nopporo Farm has 4 Filed groups as follows, 16.9 ha of Group I consists of 3 swards (I1-I3), 21.7 ha of Group II consists of 10 swards (II1-II10), 20.0 ha of Group III consists of 4 swards (III2-III5), and 17.3 ha of Group IV consists of 4 swards (IV1, IV2, IV4, IV5). 4 soil types were distributed in this farm as results of soil profile survey, Transitional-moor Peat soils, Sapric Peat soils, Haplic Gray Lowland soils, and Lowland Reformed soils. The depth of the upper boundary of the Transitional-moor Peat layer and GPS location data was surveyed as densely as possible on a rough grid for all swards. An isobath at 25 cm depth was extracted by spatial statistical processing using the IDW interpolation method. This was considered as the boundary of the surface Transitional-moor Peat soils. The parent material of soil material covering the upper layer was detected at a depth of the upper boundary of the Transitional-moor Peat layer greater than 25 cm. Spatial statistics using spline interpolation were used to classify Haplic Gray Lowland soils and Sapric Peat soils. Haplic Gray Lowland soils were distributed in the whole area of I1, I2, II7, and parts area of II1, II8, II9, II10, III5. Sapric Peat soils were distributed in whole area of II2, II3, II4, and parts area of II1, II5, II6, II8, II9, II10, III3, III4. Transitional-moor Peat soils were distributed in the whole area of Group IV, III2, and parts area of II5, II6, III3, III4. In general, these soil maps matched up well with the soil maps issued by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization in the Japanese Soil Inventory.departmental bulletin pape

    Hometown effect on consumer preferences for food products

    journal articleThis study examines how consumers’ hometown orientation affects their preferences for food products. Regarding food products, consumers may prefer products from their hometown over those produced in other domestic areas, among other factors. We consider that due to population migration, a consumers’ current or local place of residence may not necessarily be their hometown. After defining the hometown effect with a framework of consumer willingness to pay, we apply a double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation method to value the hometown effect on a rice product, based on a consumer survey conducted in Japan. This study reveals that consumers’ hometown orientation significantly affects their preferences for the rice product produced in their hometown. The magnitude of the hometown effect for the product is estimated at 48 JPY (0.44 USD) per kg in terms of consumer willingness to pay. The premium rate of the hometown effect compared with the price of the base product is 12.4%. Food labels indicating more detailed region of origin information could be a potential marketing strategy to appeal to consumers from that region but currently living in other areas.journal articl

    BulletinPotassium (K) is one of the important fertilizer elements in agriculture, and the importance of proper use management of K fertilizer has increased in recent years from the viewpoint of global population increase and food security. The purpose of this study was to clarify how the functional groups present on the root and root cell wall surface of rice plants differ depending on the K environment in the soil. In this study, in addition to rice, we cultivated tomato as a control plant, collected roots, and conducted experiments focusing on the morphology of these roots and the adsorption of ions on the functional groups of the roots. First, we examined the effects of different K supplies (mineral-K plot, available-K plot, and no-K plot) on K uptake and root morphology. Differences in K between treatments were small in both the above-ground and below-ground parts. In addition, elements extracted sequentially from roots cultivated under different K conditions were clearly different between rice and tomato: rice root surface had adsorption sites of iron more abundantly than tomato, and these sites was largely unaffected by the K environment. These results suggest that the ability to adsorb metals on the cell wall surface of rice roots is stronger than that of tomato roots, and that the morphology and functions of rice roots are independent of the K environment. It is possible that the strong reactivity of the root surface of rice to metals may play a role in the ability of crops to withstand reduced fertility through the dissolution of nutrients, such as K, from minerals.departmental bulletin pape

    2022年北海道石狩管内江別市における無農薬実験圃場でのジャガイモ疫病感染時期および発病程度の評価

    BulletinPotato late blight is an important potato disease caused by Phytophthora infestance. We cultivated four potato varieties with or without resistance to late blight in a pesticied-free potato field at Rakuno Gakuen University (Ebetsu-city, Hokkaido), and the appearance and severity of the disease were evaluated over time from May through September 2022. After sprouting, there was intermittent rainfall, and the disease symptom was first observed in Inkanomezame and Kitaakari on July 13, followed by rapid spread of the disease of both varieties. In Sayaakane with quantitative (field) resistance, the disease symptom was first observed on August 3, but there was no subsequent increase of the disease severity. In Konahime with qualitative resistance mediated by a resistance gene, the old leaf with the typical symptom was found on September 12 after the wilting stage and the disease severity did not increase. In this study, we revealed that the quantitative and qualitative resistance harbored by “Sayaakane” and “Konahime”, respectively, are functional to races of P. infestance present in Ebetsu City in 2022.departmental bulletin pape
