Intestinal Complication With Myxomatous Mitral Valve Diseases in Chihuahuas
ArticleThe effects of cardiac disease on the intestine have been reported in humans but not in dogs. We investigated the effects of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), which is capable of causing congestion and tissue hypoperfusion, on the intestine in Chihuahuas, a breed frequently encountered in clinical practice as the preferred breed for MMVD. In this study, 69 Chihuahuas were divided into four groups based on echocardiography and chest radiography: 19 healthy Chihuahuas (H) and 50 Chihuahuas with MMVD classified according to the ACVIM consensus (stage B1, B2, C/D). In all the cases, serum intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) and D/L-lactate concentrations, markers of intestinal mucosal injury, were measured. I-FABP was significantly higher in stage C/D Chihuahuas than in other groups (p < 0.05), and stage B2 was significantly higher than H (p < 0.05). D-lactate was significantly increased in stages B2 and C/D compared to H and stage B1 (p < 0.05). L-lactate was significantly higher in stage C/D Chihuahuas than in any other group (p < 0.05), and stage B2 was significantly higher than that in H and stage B1 (p < 0.05). Intestinal mucosal injury risk was significantly higher in Chihuahuas with heart failure due to MMVD, suggesting that the risk could increase with worsening heart disease. This is the first study to investigate the intestinal complications of MMVD, and further investigations a needed in the future.journal articl
Novel Virulent Bacteriophage ΦSG005, Which Infects Streptococcus gordonii, Forms a Distinct Clade among Streptococcus Viruses
ArticleBacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria and are classified as either virulent phages or temperate phages. Despite virulent phages being promising antimicrobial agents due to their bactericidal effects, the implementation of phage therapy depends on the availability of virulent phages against target bacteria. Notably, virulent phages of Streptococcus gordonii, which resides in the oral cavity and is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause periodontitis and endocarditis have previously never been found. We thus attempted to isolate virulent phages against S. gordonii. In the present study, we report for the first time a virulent bacteriophage against S. gordonii, ΦSG005, discovered from drainage water. ΦSG005 is composed of a short, non-contractile tail and a long head, revealing Podoviridae characteristics via electron microscopic analysis. In turbidity reduction assays, ΦSG005 showed efficient bactericidal effects on S. gordonii. Whole-genome sequencing showed that the virus has a DNA genome of 16,127 bp with 21 coding sequences. We identified no prophage-related elements such as integrase in the ΦSG005 genome, demonstrating that the virus is a virulent phage. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that ΦSG005 forms a distinct clade among the streptococcus viruses and is positioned next to streptococcus virus C1. Molecular characterization revealed the presence of an anti-CRISPR (Acr) IIA5-like protein in the ΦSG005 genome. These findings facilitate our understanding of streptococcus viruses and advance the development of phage therapy against S. gordonii infection.journal articl
Serum iron concentration is candidate inflammatory marker for respiratory diseases in beef cows
ArticleWe hypothesized that the serum iron (Fe) concentration in cows with respiratory diseases is a satisfactory substitute for major inflammatory markers such as haptoglobin (HPT) and serum amyloid A (SAA). Twenty Japanese Black cows aged 279.6 ± 120.0 days were enrolled, and divided into respiratory diseases and control groups based on the presence of clinical findings of respiratory diseases. As a result, area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for plasma HPT, SAA and serum Fe concentrations for respiratory disease-associated systemic inflammation were excellent, at 1.00, 0.96 and 0.97, respectively. Therefore we confirmed that the serum Fe concentration is a satisfactory substitute for HPT and SAA in beef cows with respiratory diseases.journal articl

盗食の鑑別に全身麻酔下で胃内視鏡検査を行ったアメリカバクの1症例
Article動物展示施設で飼育されている4歳齢、雌のアメリカバクが、清掃作業中に化繊布の雑巾を盗食し、糞便量が激減したことを主訴に酪農学園大学附属動物医療センターに往診を依頼した。現場で腹部超音波検査を実施したものの、腸閉塞を完全に否定する所見は得られず、翌日に本学動物医療センターに搬入した。胃内視鏡検査にて化繊布の端物のみ確認でき、大型異物は認められなかった。消化管閉塞を疑う臨床所見も認められず、検査日朝の糞便から化繊布の細片が検出されたことから、化繊布は溶解し糞便中に排出されたと結論づけた。journal articl
