Identification of Neurological Markers of Sarcopenia Disease Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Machine Learning
Sarcopenia, a disease defined by the loss of muscle mass and function, plays a significant role in the quality of life of the elderly. Recent studies suggest that the loss of muscle strength and function associated with sarcopenia may be linked to neural control mechanisms. This study aimed to find a neuro-cognitive biomarker for sarcopenia and to classify it using fNIRS and machine learning methods. Connectivity matrices created from fNIRS data obtained from the Hand Grip experiment, conducted on 50 participants (27 controls, 23 sarcopenic), were used as features in the classification. This resulted in the Linear SVM model showing the highest performance with an 87.4% accuracy rate and 0.94 AUC value. These results indicate that functional connectivity data obtained through fNIRS could serve as an objective biomarker for sarcopenia classification, and that high-performance classification is feasible using this biomarker

Jointly Preserving Subject and Object Anonymity in Nearby Friends Querying for Curious Service Providers
Tokat Gaziosmanpasa UniversitesiThis work studies the urban area location privacy preserving location updates and nearby friends (NF) querying for the centralized proximity based services (PBSs). The urban area constraint forces the user mobility to be on the city road network, modeled as a weighted directed graph. The location privacy model exploits location anonymity through subgraph cloaking. Two kinds of location privacy issues have been identified and handled in a unified framework, (i) Subject Anonymity on location updates, i.e., providing location anonymity of the location updater (against the curious PBS provider), and (ii) Object Anonymity on NF querying, i.e., providing location anonymity of friends in NF query responses (against the curious query issuer). In the former, the user simulates the PBS provider's belief (a subgraph) on his location whereabouts, and locally blocks anonymity violating location update requests which is understood by a simulated attack. In the latter, as the NF query processor, the PBS provider simulates the user's mutual beliefs (subgraphs) on friends' location whereabouts obtained through previous NF queries. By a simulated attack, some friends' existence are suppressed from the NF query responses. An experimental evaluation on a real dataset has been conducted. © 2024 ACM.TUBITAK, (118E712
Comparative Analysis and Performance Evaluation of Underwater Cable Detection and Tracking Techniques: a Comprehensive Survey
This survey provides a comprehensive review of underwater cable detection and tracking literature, identifying key problem types and highlighting unique underwater challenges. It emphasizes the critical role of underwater cable detection in global communications and energy infrastructures, addressing complexities like low visibility and variable sea conditions. The analysis compares the efficacy of various models, particularly deep learning approaches like CNNs and Transformers, in adapting to underwater imagery challenges. A new roadmap for efficient cable detection and tracking systems is proposed, focusing on multimodal data integration and nonoptical detection methods. Importantly, the study includes performance evaluations of state-of-the-art models on custom underwater datasets, offering practical insights. Uluslararası Ceza Mahkemesi'nin Yargı Yetkisine Giren Yeni Bir Suç Oluşturma İdeali: Çevrekırım (ecocide)
Bu çalışmada, çevrenin uluslararası ceza hukuku aracılığıyla korunmasının sağlanması amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda öncelikle uluslararası çevre hukukunda yer alan düzenlemelerin çevrenin korunması hususunda yeterliliği incelenmiştir. Daha sonra uluslararası ceza hukukunun ve yargılamasının kapsamı, özellikleri ve uluslararası suç türleri belirtilmiştir. Bu bağlamda, öğretinin ve Uluslararası Ceza Mahkemesi'nin güncel konulara ilişkin yaklaşımı incelenerek ve uluslararası çevre hukuku ve uluslararası ceza hukukunun özellikleri araştırılarak çevrenin çevreye ilişkin yeni bir suç türü olarak uluslararası ceza hukuku ile korunup korunamayacağı değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Mevcut durumun çevrenin "çevrekırım (ecocide)" adı altında yeni bir uluslararası suç tipi ile korunmasını gerektirdiği tespit edilmiş ve çevrekırımın yeni bir suç olarak kabulü halinde uluslararası hukuk ve uluslararası hukuk dalları içerisinde gerçekleşmesi beklenen değişiklikler ve muhtemel sonuçlar belirtilmiştir.This study aims to advocate for the protection of the environment through the application of international criminal law. In this regard, firstly, the adequacy of regulations within international environmental law concerning environmental protection is examined. Subsequently, the scope, characteristics, and classifications of international crimes within international criminal law and jurisdiction are outlined. In this context, through an examination of doctrinal perspectives and the approach of the International Criminal Court towards contemporary issues, coupled with examining the characteristics of both international environmental law and international criminal law, the study evaluates the feasibility of protecting the environment through the recognition of a novel category of crime pertaining to environmental offenses. It is determined that the prevailing circumstances require the protection of environment via the recognition of a new international crime termed "ecocide", and upon the acceptance of ecocide as a new crime, anticipated changes and potential alterations within international law and its various branches are specified
Pleomorphic Adenoma with Extensive Mucinous Metaplasia Mimicking Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review
Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the salivary glands. Histologically, it is characterized by the presence of both epithelial and mesenchymal elements and may contain various metaplastic changes. This paper reported a case of pleomorphic adenoma with extensive mucinous metaplasia, which is histologically very similar to mucoepi-dermoid carcinoma. Pleomorphic adenoma with extensive mucinous and squamous differentiation may be misdiagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Immunohis-tochemistry was ineffective in differential diagnosis, and the diagnosis was confirmed by the absence of mastermind like transcriptional coactivator 2 (MAML2) translocation. The detection of MAML2 translocation can help avoid misdiagnosis of MEC in similar cases. Additionally, the published literature on metaplasia on pleomorphic adenoma was also reviewed and summarized. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
Clinical and Demographic Characteristics of Treatment Requiring Retinopathy of Prematurity in Big Premature Infants in Turkiye: Report No. 1 (BIG-ROP Study)

Methods: Data on the infants with a GA of 32-37 weeks and BW >1,500 g who developed treatment requiring ROP (TR-ROP) were collected retrospectively from the 33 ROP centres in Turkiye. GA, BW, type of hospital, neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) level, presence of an ophthalmologist and neonatologist in the same hospital, length of stay in NICU, duration of oxygen therapy, comorbidities, type of ROP, and timing for TR-ROP development were analysed. Results: A total of366 infants were included in the study. Mean GA and BW were 33 +/- 1 weeks and 1,896 +/- 316 g, respectively. Duration of hospitalization was 3-4 weeks in 46.8% of them. The first ROP examination was performed at postnatal 4-5 weeks in 80.3% of infants, which was significantly later in level 2 and lower NICUs and non-university clinics. At the first ROP examination, any stage of ROP was detected in 90.9% and TR-ROP was detected in 15.3% of the infants. The mean postnatal week of TR-ROP development was 6.16 +/- 2.04. Conclusion: Routine ROP screening thresholds need to be expanded in hospitals with suboptimal NICU conditions considering the development of TR-ROP in more mature and heavier preterm infants. The first ROP examination should be earlier than the fourth postnatal week
Mobility Characterization Based on Spatio-Temporal Data
Konum-zaman tabanlı parmak izi çıkarımı, bireylerin seyahat davranışlarını analiz etme ve anonimleştirilmiş verilerden kullanıcı kimliklerini tahmin etme süreçlerinde önemli bir rol oynayan, güncel gezginlik (mobility) analizi alanında kritik bir yaklaşımdır. Bu bağlamda, özellikle Trajectory-user linking (TUL) kapsamında yapılan çalışmalar, Lokasyon Tabanlı Sosyal Ağ (LBSN) verileri üzerinde çeşitli yapay sinir ağı modellerinin geliştirilmesiyle dikkat çekmektedir. Bununla birlikte, GPS gibi sıralı ve zamansal boyut içeren konum verileriyle çalışan yapay sinir ağı modellerine ilişkin literatürde henüz kapsamlı bir çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu eksikliği gidermek amacıyla, sıralı konum-zaman verilerini işleyebilen yenilikçi bir model olan Spatio-Temporal Sequential Graph Neural Network (STSeqGNN) bu çalışmada önerilmiştir. Geliştirilen model, hem haritanın çizge yapısını hem de verilerin zaman boyutunu etkili ve verimli bir şekilde işleyebilme kabiliyetiyle öne çıkmaktadır. Ayrıca, güzergahlara ait hareket bilgilerini ve temel istatistiksel özellikleri de analiz edebilme yeteneğine sahiptir. Bu özellikleri sayesinde, STSeqGNN hem veri bütünlüğünü koruyarak hem de hareket paternlerini anlamlandırarak daha hassas tahminlerde bulunabilmektedir. Modelin performansı, farklı veri setleri üzerinde test edilmiş ve sonuçlar, k-tahmin doğruluğu (k-accuracy) metriği kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, modelin \%99'un üzerinde bir başarı oranına ulaşarak, özellikle seyahat davranışı analizinde etkili bir yöntem sunduğunu göstermektedir. In this context, studies under the Trajectory-User Linking (TUL) framework have focused on developing various neural network models using Location-Based Social Network (LBSN) data. However, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding neural network models designed specifically to process sequential spatio-temporal data, such as GPS traces. To address this gap, this study introduces an innovative model called the Spatio-Temporal Sequential Graph Neural Network (STSeqGNN), capable of processing sequential spatio-temporal data effectively. The proposed model excels in leveraging both the graph structure of the map and the temporal dimension of the data, ensuring efficient and accurate processing. Additionally, it evaluates the mobility patterns and fundamental statistical properties of trajectories, enabling more precise predictions while preserving data integrity. The model's performance was evaluated on multiple datasets, and the results were assessed using the k-accuracy metric. The findings demonstrate that STSeqGNN achieves an accuracy of over 99\% across various datasets, highlighting its effectiveness in analyzing travel behaviors. These results underline the model's strong potential as a powerful tool for both theoretical exploration and practical applications in mobility analysis
Search for a new i>Z/i>′ gauge boson via the i>pp/i> → i>W/i>SUP>±(/SUP>*SUP>)/SUP> → i>Z/i>′μSUP>±/SUP>ν → μSUP>±/SUP>μSUP>∓/SUP>μSUP>±/SUP>ν process in i>pp/i> collisions at √i>s/i>=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for a new Z' gauge boson predicted by L-mu - L-tau models, based on charged-current Drell-Yan production, pp -> W-+/-(*()) -> Z'mu(+/-)nu -> mu(+/-)mu(-/+)mu(+/-)nu, is presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search examines a final state of 3 mu plus large missing transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the Z' production cross section times branching ratio in the mass range of 5-81 GeV. After combining with the previous Z' search using the neutral-current Drell-Yan production with a 4 mu final state, the most stringent exclusion limits to date are achieved in the parameter space of the Z' coupling strength and mass.Funded by SCOAPSUP>3/SUP>.SCOAPSUP>
Applicable Law To the Legal Parentage of a Child Born Through International Surrogacy
The method of surrogacy has always been the subject of legal, social, religious, and moral debates since its inception and has ultimately been prohibited in many countries. However, the global infertility rate of approximately 17.5% has led to the continued existence of surrogacy as a strong alternative to traditional assisted reproductive methods. It is estimated that around 20,000 children are born every year through this method. Many of these births are because of agreements between prospective parents residing in countries where the practise is prohibited and surrogate mothers residing in countries where it is permitted. Therefore, the initial challenge encountered at the birth of a child is the issue of establishing parentage between the prospective parents and the child. Although prohibited in Turkey, the legality of surrogacy in countries such as Greece, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ukraine, and Georgia increases the likelihood of disputes related to international surrogacy before the Turkish courts. In this context, the article provides general information about surrogacy, examines how it is regulated in Turkish law and foreign legal systems, summarises the European Court of Human Rights' approach, outlines the work of The Hague Conference on Private International Law, and determines the position of article 16 of Turkish International Private and Procedural Law (M ; Ouml;HUK). As a result, since the current form of article 16 of M ; Ouml;HUK does not allow to reach a law which establishes legal parentage between prospective parents and children, amendments have been proposed regarding the article
