Turkey: the Second Republic
Focused on the rise of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) over the last two decades, this book discusses and contextualizes key events and developments in Turkish politics, economics and foreign policy. The authors begin by exploring the longer-term historical trends that shaped the country, focusing on Ottoman and Republican legacies, culminating in the formation of the modern state in Turkey. This context, it is argued, is key in understanding the AKP’s emergence since 2002 as the preeminent political power. The book further argues that the AKP achieved this position due to political maneuvers aimed at undermining military influence within politics, its management of the economy and its approach to foreign policy. These three domains are dealt with in successive chapters to help explicate how the AKP built broad societal coalitions and consolidated its power. The book concludes by analyzing contemporary developments: in the face of mounting economic and political challenges, the fate of the AKP, and of Turkey, remain uncertain. Written in an accessible style and grounded in data-driven analysis, the book will appeal to journalists, policymakers, researchers and general audiences interested in the contemporary Middle East, Turkish political economy and international relations. © 2024 Birol Başkan and Burak Bilgehan Özpek
Stock Price Prediction Using Mamba
The prices in the stock market constantly fluctuate due to the influence of internal and external dynamics. For investors, predicting these movements can provide a significant advantage. Accurately forecasting stock prices is crucial for both reducing investment risks and increasing returns, while preventing financial losses. However, the volatile and complex nature of financial markets makes this process challenging. Recently, models like Mamba, based on state space models, have delivered effective results in sequence modelling. In this study, the goal was to predict stock closing prices using the Mamba model. The model's performance was evaluated on the prices of six companies listed on the Nasdaq. Mamba demonstrated better performance with lower error rates compared to our baseline models, MLP and LSTM. These results may help investors reduce risks and make more informed decisions. © 2024 IEEE
Aile Şirketlerinin Aile Şirketi Olmayan Şirketlere Göre Muhasebe ve Piyasa Performanslarının Değerlendirilmesi
This study investigated whether family companies and non-family companies differ in terms of accounting and financial market performance for the Turkish sample. In this study, the accounting and financial market performance indicators of family companies and non-family companies operating in the manufacturing sector in Turkey were compared using the Unpaired T-Test for 2021, 2022 and 2023. In the analysis, gross profit margin, net profit margin, operating profit margin, profit margin before interest and taxes, profit margin before interest, taxes and depreciation, return on assets and return on equity were used as accounting performance indicators; while price earnings ratio, book to market value ratio and stock return were used as financial market performance indicators. In total, data of 99 companies and 122 companies were accessed for accounting performance indicators and financial market performance indicators respectively. As a result of the study, while no consistent and significant difference was observed in terms of accounting performance between family companies and non-family companies in general; it was concluded that family companies showed a relatively better performance in terms of financial market performance.Bu çalışmada Aile şirketleri ile Aile şirketi olmayan şirketlerin muhasebe ve piyasa performans açısından farklılık gösterip göstermediği Türkiye örneklemi için araştırılmıştır. Optimizing Technical Analysis Indicator Parameters with Grey Wolf Optimization
Innovative Methods in Computer Science and Computational Applications in the Era of Industry 5.0 Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Applied Mathematics in Engineering ICAIAME 2023, Volume 2Technical market indicators play an important role in the technical analysis due to their key role of predicting trend changes and making trade decisions. Besides choosing an indicator to use, deciding the right parameters for higher returns is a common problem for market professionals. Even though technical indicators with common parameters create a general perspective for most of the financial securities, it is possible to tune these parameters specific for each security. In this paper, Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm is proposed to determine the right parameters to achieve the maximum Sharpe Ratio on 5 different U.S. stocks individually. Relative Strength Index (RSI) is chosen to be optimized. Optimizations are implemented for two scenarios, with or without considering the trend of security. After optimizing the RSI parameters, mean returns of the stocks increased 24.987% without and 104.395% with trend specification on test sets. Even though this is a preliminary study, the results indicate that GWO can be useful for optimizing algorithmic trading strategy parameters
Search for the Exclusive W Boson Hadronic Decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→k^{±}γ and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ With the Atlas Detector
A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→K^{±}γ, and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ is performed using up to 140 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13 TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products. The search results in the most stringent upper limits to date on the branching fractions B(W^{±}→π^{±}γ)1.9×10^{-6}, B(W^{±}→K^{±}γ)1.7×10^{-6}, B(W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ)5.2×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level
Buckling Behaviour Of Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg Lattice Structure
Additive Manufacturing Conference (AMC) Türkiye 2024 April 25 – 27, 2024The buckling analyses of AlSi10Mg Body-Centered Cubic lattice structures fabricated using selective laser melting were performed. The critical buckling loads and stresses for different relative densities of a lattice structure having 2x2x2 cells in x-, y- and z-direction were calculated using the analytical formulations taken from the literature and verified with the finite element analyses. The critical buckling loads were significantly affected by the relative density (strut diameter and unit cell size). A good match between analytical and numerical results was also shown for the performed buckling analysis. This work was financially supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). From Old Homeland To the New One: Migration Movements and Policies Between 1918-1923
The period between 1918 and 1923 witnessed a huge transformation process. Various migration waves, civilian tragedies, challenging policies and ideologies, occupations and liberations took place during this period. Following Introduction, Literature Review and Methodology chapters, this study discusses the key migration concepts, their "descent and emergence", from a genealogical perspective and links them to the migratory movements between 1918-1923. In Chapter IV, it explains the migratory movements starting from the Armistice of Mudros. These movements could fall into five main categories: i) Refugees fleeing conflict or war zones such as the White Russians in the West or Muslim and non-Muslim groups in the East, ii) Repatriation of the Armenian, Rum, Kurdish and Arab refugees who were forced to migrate during the World War I, iii) Incoming migrants in the Armistice period to seize the majority considering the Wilsonian Principles, iv) Consecutive migration movements due to the occupations and liberations in Anatolia, v) Migrations upon the decision of Allied Powers or the Istanbul and Ankara Governments. Since all these movements are often intertwined, they are discussed regionally. In Chapter V, migration policies during the period are examined. It is found that both Istanbul and Ankara governments had anti-migration stance. Nation- and state-building efforts, maintaining population dominance, establishing order and security, as well as socio-economic concerns are the main driving factors behind the migration policies of Istanbul and Ankara governments.1918-1923 yılları, büyük bir dönüşüm sürecine şahitlik etmiştir.
Simultaneous Unbinned Differential Cross-Section Measurement of Twenty-Four Z plus jets Kinematic Observables With the ATLAS Detector
Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins. In this analysis, a machine learning method called omnifold is used to produce a simultaneous measurement of twenty-four Z+jets observables using 139 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Unlike any previous fiducial differential cross-section measurement, this result is presented unbinned as a dataset of particle-level events, allowing for flexible reuse in a variety of contexts and for new observables to be constructed from the twenty-four measured observables
