Borderline: an Interdisciplinary Spatial Installation
The relation of architecture and technology has always been a necessity and dependent on each other. The advancements in technology and understanding of both fields made this relation inseparable. Technology has always shaped the design parameters in history and continues to with increasing effect. Architectural education should embrace such a relation to adapt to the changes. The first-year basic design studio at TOBB ETU, considers that ways of thinking and producing together with technology should be a part of architectural design education. This paper is motivated by and the coupling of technology and architecture at the firstyear basic design studio. In this respect, the content of the course challenges the students to question the relationship between technology and design, space, and technology. In this context, the collective working within the scope of assignments is accentuated during the course. The “BORDERLINE” installation is a work created in this context in 2017 with the participation of all basic design studio students that is shaped during the semester by students' discussions, interactive work, and exchange of ideas in the studio. The core of the work was that the students aimed to demonstrate changing boundaries of space by using technology. To this end, the spaces are designed to physically change with human interaction by using Arduino programmable boards, sensors, and DC motors. Six 1x2 m modules consisting of 8x0.15 m fabric strips are assembled. The length of the fabric strips changes by Arduino boards and DC motors according to feedback from the sensors. Borderline is not only a spatial installation but also a study on the impact of technology on space and the results of interdisciplinary education. Borderline, as an interdisciplinary work, aimed to couple the methods of different disciplines. At a time when technology shapes design parameters, Borderline was designed and realized by thinking about architecture together with technology. First-year architecture education is the period in which space, the tools that make space possible, and design as a form of research and learning are explored. In this sense, such a period should embrace an interdisciplinary approach to develop fundamental infrastructure for unexplored practice
Comparison of Two Sedation Protocols on Intraocular Pressure and Hemodynamic Responses During Colonoscopy
OBJECTIVE: Colonoscopy is one of the most frequently performed interventional endoscopic procedures for diagnosis and treatment. During the procedure, the increase in intraabdominal pressure can cause undesirable spikes in intraocular pressure. In the literature, there are no studies on agent combinations that cause the least effect on intraocular pressure and hemodynamic response in colonoscopic procedures, which are performed more frequently in the elderly, the patient group at the greatest risk for glaucoma. This study aimed to compare ketamine-propofol and ketamine-midazolam protocols in terms of their effects on hemodynamic parameters and intraocular pressure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research was a randomized clinical controlled double-blind study. The study was conducted on 60 healthy adults who underwent elective colonoscopy. Ketamin-midazolam and ketamine-propofol combinations were used. Hemodynamic parameters, intraocular pressures at five different times, and the satisfaction levels of the endoscopist and the patient were recorded. RESULTS: In both groups, there was a statistically significant difference between the pre-procedure intraocular pressure values and the values at the 1st minute of the procedure and at recovery (p0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between the intraocular pressure values of the study groups at any time point (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both combinations can be used safely. The combination of ketamine and propofol in subanesthetic doses provides better sedation without disturbing the hemodynamics and is preferable. © 2022 Verduci Editore s.r.l. All rights reserved
A Genealogy of the Concept of Civilization (medeniyet) in Ottoman Political Thought: A Homegrown Perception?
Article; Early AccessSince the first translation of the concept of civilization into Turkish as medeniyet in 1837 by Sadik Rifat Pasha, the then Ottoman Ambassador to Vienna, this coinage has turned out to be an essential component of Turkish modernization. This paper aims to establish a genealogy of the concept of medeniyet to demonstrate the divergences of Ottoman perceptions in different periods throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that civilization was first perceived by a group of Ottoman intellectuals as a tool to reach an ideal state of being (c. 1840-1860). The next generation of Ottoman intellectuals (c. 1860-1890) defined civilization as the ideal state of being, yet they had different views on the concept, particularly concerning the distinction between material and moral elements of civilization. Finally, the third generation of Ottoman intellectuals (c. 1890-1920), whose thoughts were more or less crystallized under three broad political currents labeled as Westernism, Islamism, and Turkism, had different and sometimes contradicting perceptions of civilization based on their political outlooks. By referring to the writings of these intellectuals, the paper will discuss central debates on civilization in the late Ottoman Empire, such as the singularity/plurality of civilization(s), the existence of Islamic civilization as an alternative to European civilization, the degree of importing from European civilization, and the distinction between culture and civilization. Moreover, it argues that the Turkish perception of medeniyet is different from the European perception of civilization; in other words, while the Ottoman perception of the concept of civilization is not homeborn, it is homegrown. Accordingly, Ottoman intellectuals not only divided the material and moral elements of civilization and opted for importing the former, but they also questioned the singularity and supremacy of European civilization by referring to Islamic civilization either as an extinct yet once-present form of civilization or as a potential rival to European civilization
The Relationship Between Fan Tokens and Cryptocurrencies: an Empirical Evidence

Therefore, the developments in the crypto money exchanges should be followed especially and carefully for those who see the Fan Tokens as an investment tool
A Turkish Case of Incontinentia Pigmenti With a Deletion Mutation at Inhibitor of Kappa B Kinase Gamma Gene
Background Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare X-linked dominant disorder affecting the skin and other ectodermal tissues that is caused by a mutation of the IKBKG/NEMO gene. Case presentation We describe a Turkish family with IP. Sanger sequencing was performed in our patient with IP, and we identified DNA variant c.172_173delAA (p.Asn58SerfsTer79) in IKBKG. We found the same mutation in the patient's mother and grandmother. Conclusion Our report expands the mutation spectrum in this disorder and provides valuable information on the importance of the IKBKG. Our study shows that confirmation of the mutation analysis of IP in the suspected cases is necessary for future planning pregnancies
This paper focuses on the linguistic analysis of constructions involving affix sharing in Turkish. For instance, a phrase like [[A and B]-plural] in Turkish is understood to be semantically equivalent to a phrase of the form [[A-plural] and [B-plural]]. The plural marker in the expression [[A and B]-plural] is understood to affect both of the conjuncts semantically. This is why such constructions came to be called suspended affixation (Lewis, 1967). One important problem that such constructions raise for linguistic analysis is the task of accounting for the semantic equivalence between the constructions that involve suspension and those that do not. For Kornfilt (2012), this semantic equivalence is enabled by the fact that suspended affixation constructions are derived via Right Node Raising. This paper argues against Kornfilt’s movement-based analysis and claims that suspended affixation is obtained via direct merger of the plural morpheme with the coordinated expression. That is, it will be claimed that there is no need to derivationally relate [[A and B]-plural] and [[A-plural] and [B-plural]]. In order to defend this view, it will be shown that coordination of pluralized nouns gives rise to certain interpretations that suspended affixation lacks
Design Optimization and Validation for Additive Manufacturing: a Satellite Bracket Application
In the aerospace industry, structures are designed (or aimed) to be as light as possible to reduce emissions and carbon footprint; additionally, they are designed to improve fuel efficiency and service life while satisfying the mechanical requirements. Due to the development of additive manufacturing technology, complex structures with higher mechanical performance obtained through topology optimization (TO) can be manufactured. In this study, the overall process from part selection to qualification for a space industry-engineering application is described. First, the design space of the selected aluminum bracket is generated, and TO is performed by using stress and minimum member size constraints. The bracket is re-designed with respect to the TO output data as a reference and then the new design is validated numerically by structural analyses. The validated design is manufactured using the selective laser melting method, and heat treatment is applied to obtain more homogenized microstructure. Mechanical tests are performed on the manufactured brackets under the qualification loading conditions and post-testing examination processes are applied with metallurgical and metrological tests. According to the test results, the qualification process of the bracket is successfully completed. Consequently, the new bracket designed with TO was found to be 25% lighter than the existing design; thus, it has a huge improvement in fuel efficiency and environmental impact during the launching phase.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) under the Frontier R;D Laboratory Support Program [5189901]The authors acknowledge the support of Turkish Aerospace for providing test facilities. Revisiting the Analogy of the Building Envelope and the Skin: a Biomimetic Perspective
In the 20th century, advancements in science and technology enabled us to extract nature's genius to solve the problems of humankind. The mind shift brought by biological knowledge and computational thinking, and advancements in digital fabrication technologies opened a new era in architecture's relationship with nature. The skin analogy has been magnified in many built and unbuilt examples of building envelopes and research and experiments in the field. This paper aims to uncover the potential of the analogy of the skin and building envelope with a biomimetic perspective. It proposes taking skin as a model not only to increase the efficiency of the building envelopes but also to develop new features such as multi-functionality and adaptivity. It also aims to contribute to the use of biomimetics to create more sustainable envelopes that inherits not only the formal but also the functional and ecologically beneficial properties of the skin. The initial research highlighted the basic principles and perspectives of this approach to develop further investigations
Bridging Bargaining Theory With the Regulation of a Natural Monopoly
In this paper, we integrate the bargaining theory with the problem of regulating a natural monopoly under symmetric information or asymmetric information with complete ignorance. We prove that the unregulated payoffs under symmetric information and the optimally regulated payoffs under asymmetric information define a pair of bargaining sets which are dual to (reflections of) each other. Thanks to this duality, the bargaining solution under asymmetric information can be obtained from the solution under symmetric information by permuting the implied payoffs of the monopolist and consumers provided that the bargaining rule satisfies anonymity and homogeneity. We also show that under symmetric (asymmetric) information the bargaining payoffs (permuted payoffs) obtained under the Egalitarian, Nash, and Kalai-Smorodinsky rules are equivalent to the Cournot-Nash payoffs of unregulated symmetric oligopolies, involving two, three, and four firms, respectively. Moreover, we characterize two bargaining rules using, in addition to (weak or strong) Pareto optimality, several new axioms that depend only on the essentials of the regulation problem
