Peter Shaffer's Equus and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)

    No full text
Peter Shaffer's Equus (1973) is a distinctive play in its representation of complex psychological/psychiatric issues on the theatre stage. As such, the play is one of the most notable theatrical works of psychological realism in English theatre. Peter Shaffer achieves this especially through his characterization of the mentally unstable Alan Strang. Since his childhood, Alan has developed an extraordinary attachment to and obsession with horses, and this eventually results in his blinding six horses and his entrustment to the treatment of the psychiatrist Martin Dysart. Accordingly, Equus has been, so far, studied through various - mainly psychological and psychiatric perspectives. In this sense, the aim of this article is to shed a new light and contribute to these studies by examining the close relations between Peter Shaffer's Equus and equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) - an acknowledged method of psychiatric treatment by means of horses that psychiatrist Dysart of the play neglects (or is unaware of) while planning his therapies for Alan, who, due to his intimacy with horses, also as a stable-boy, might benefit from the methods of equine-assisted psychotherapy. For this purpose, this article analyses and reveals the ties between the play and equine-assisted psychotherapy mainly through related studies on the therapy, Shaffer's characterization of Alan, and relevant incidents in the play

Uncertainty Management With an Autonomous Approach To Fuzzy Set-Covering Facility Location Models

    No full text
Facility location models have been studied in the literature for decades as an outstanding branch of supply chain planning. Set-covering facility location models are among the most commonly used approaches to establishing and running a distribution network. However, real-life brings uncertain and imprecise parameters that need to be reflected in the model systematically and computably to achieve more efficient and precise solutions. That's why fuzzy set covering models have been introduced in the literature from various perspectives. This work aimed to handle real-life uncertainties in an unbiased and autonomous way and provide more precise solutions to fuzzy set-covering facility location models in real-life contexts. Therefore, we propose a novel approach, adopting the autonomous fuzzy methodology consisting of fuzzy trapezoidal set coverage to minimize the cost of establishing new facilities. This work's main innovative achievements are that i) the set-covering facility location models were equipped with autonomous uncertainty management ability, ii) the trapezoidal fuzzy set coverage constituted a perfect fit for the management of uncertainties in a realistic way in the model, and iii) the relevant fuzzification was executed without any human/expert intervention/supervision. The well-known Turkish Network Data demonstrated the proposed model's efficacy. Furthermore, the results show that the developed model contributed to the overall theoretical framework of fuzzy approach employment in optimization models and outperformed classical version in numerical experiments

Multi-Objective Design Optimization of Additively Manufactured Lattice Structures for Improved Energy Absorption Performance

    No full text
This paper aims to improve the energy absorption performance of stiffness-optimized lattice structures by utilizing a multi-objective surrogate-based size optimization that considers the additive manufacturing (AM) constraints such as the minimum printable size. A truss optimization is first utilized at the unit cell level under static compressive loads for stiffness maximization and two optimized lattice configurations called the Face-Body Centered Cubic (FBCC) lattice and the Octet Cubic (OC) are obtained. A multi-objective size optimization process is then carried out to improve the energy absorption capabilities of those lattice designs using non-linear compression simulations with Nylon12 material to be fabricated by the Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) AM process. Thin plate spline (TPS) interpolation method is found to produce very high accuracy as the surrogate model to predict the highly nonlinear response surfaces of energy absorption objectives in the optimization. Compared to the lattice designs with uniform strut diameters, by using the optimization process, the maximum energy absorption efficiency (EAEm) and the crush stress efficiency (CSE) of the OC lattice design are further improved up to 33% and 37%, respectively. The FBCC lattice design is also found to have superior EAEm performance compared to the existing lattice types considered for fabricating by the MJF process in the literature. © IMechE 2021

Computational Modeling of Motile Cilia-Driven Cerebrospinal Flow in the Brain Ventricles of Zebrafish Embryo

    No full text
Motile cilia are hair-like microscopic structures which generate directional flow to provide fluid transport in various biological processes. Ciliary beating is one of the sources of cerebrospinal flow (CSF) in brain ventricles. In this study, we investigated how the tilt angle, quantity, and phase relationship of cilia affect CSF flow patterns in the brain ventricles of zebrafish embryos. For this purpose, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed to determine the flow fields generated by the motile cilia. The cilia are modeled as thin membranes with prescribed motions. The cilia motions were obtained from a two-day post-fertilization zebrafish embryo previously imaged via light sheet fluorescence microscopy. We observed that the cilium angle significantly alters the generated flow velocity and mass flow rates. As the cilium angle gets closer to the wall, higher flow velocities are observed. Phase difference between two adjacent beating cilia also affects the flow field as the cilia with no phase difference produce significantly lower mass flow rates. In conclusion, our simulations revealed that the most efficient method for cilia-driven fluid transport relies on the alignment of multiple cilia beating with a phase difference, which is also observed in vivo in the developing zebrafish brain.Part of this work was supported by a FRIPRO grant from the Research Council of Norway (N.J.-Y. grant number 314189). In the age of Big Data, many companies work with a huge amount of data. Database migration is an important problem faced by companies dealing with big data. Not only is migration a costly procedure, it involves serious security risks as well. Due to the quality-of-service requirements, it is often not possible to migrate all databases at once. Therefore, companies prefer to perform database migration in multiple short time intervals called shifts. For some institutions, the primary focus is on reducing the cost of the migration operation, which manifests itself in application testing. For other institutions, minimizing security risks is the most important goal, especially if the data involved is of a sensitive nature. In the literature, the database migration problem has been studied from a test cost minimization perspective. This thesis focuses on an orthogonal measure, i.e., security risk minimization. The security risk is associated with the number of shifts needed to complete the migration task. Ideally, the migration should be completed in as few shifts as possible, so that the risk of data exposure is minimized. In this thesis, a formal framework for studying the database migration problem from the perspective of security risk minimization is provided. The framework consists of 24 models and it is designed so that it can take the different needs of the companies into account. The computational complexity of 23 of the 24 models is established. 16 of the models in the framework are NP-hard, and 7 of the models can be solved in polynomial time. Moreover, it is proven that 2 of the NP-hard models admit an asymptotic fully polynomial time approximation scheme while 12 of the NP-hard models does not admit a polynomial time approximation scheme. For the NP-hard models, several constructive heuristic and local search algorithms are designed, and memetic algorithms that employ these algorithms are developed. The memetic algorithms use 2 problem-specific crossover and 2 mutation operators. These memetic algorithms produce solutions that are within 10% in 95% of the instances and solve 72.1% of the instances optimally under 8 seconds. Furthermore, developed algorithms produce solutions that are within 7% in 95% of the instances and solve 74.5% of the instances optimally under 82 seconds.İçinde bulunduğumuz Büyük Veri çağında birçok firma devasa boyutlarda verilerle çalışmaktadır.

Secondary Processing of Aramid With Awj and Optimization With Nsga-Iii

    No full text
The secondary operations of composite parts are performed following thermal cure processes, which generate the final dimensions with desired tolerance and quality specifications. High-strength composites, on the other hand, especially aramid fiber-reinforced polymers (AFRP), are not suitable for conventional machining operations due in part to high operational costs and limited surface quality characterized by fuzziness and delamination. Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) has been recently shown promising results in obtaining improved surface quality while ensuring significant cost advantages. This study investigates the AWJ processing of AFRP by implementing the analysis of variance and response surface methods. The effects of the control parameters (sand ratio, pressure, stand-off-distance, and feed rate) on the surface quality metrics (surface roughness, kerf angle, and dimensional error) are identified and comparatively evaluated. The surface quality of the AWJ processed AFRP specimens are investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The trade-offs between the measured tolerances and surface roughness values are identified via a new genetic algorithm approach: Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-III). Also, operation regions are determined using the generated Pareto curves while improving the quality of various features of an AFRP component, critical to its functional performance during extended service life. As a result, the lowest Ra values obtained were 4.135 mu m for trimming, 5.962 mu m for pocketing, and 4.696 mu m for the hole-making operation. The maximum error in the accuracy of operating regions yields to 7% with independent measurements for validation.Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu [118M027]The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was supported by the Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu, (grant number 118M027)
