Deep Neck Contouring With a Focus on Submandibular Gland Vascularity: a Cadaver Study

    No full text
Background Opening the neck through a submental incision allows accurate management of deep neck structures and results in exceptional neck contours. Objectives The authors aimed to evaluate the distribution of deep neck structures and investigate the detailed vascular anatomy of the submandibular gland. Methods A total of 26 fresh frozen cadaver heads (15 female, 11 male) were utilized. The authors evaluated the weights of the excised tissues simulating cosmetic resections, including subcutaneous fat, subplatysmal fat, the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, and submandibular glands. The vascular supply of the submandibular gland and intracapsular vessel diameters were also investigated. Results Whereas female cadavers had greater mean tissue weight removed from the supraplatysmal plane (mean 20.9 g, 56.6%) than the subplatysmal plane (16 g, 43.4%), male cadavers had higher mean tissue weight removed from the subplatysmal plane (10.5 g, 60.7%) than the supraplatysmal plane (mean 6.8 g, 39.3%). The mean subcutaneous (6.8 g) and subplatysmal (6.4 g) fat weights were almost equal in male cadavers; mean subcutaneous fat weight (20.9 g) was 3 times higher than subplatysmal fat weight (6.8 g) in female cadavers. There was a statistically significant relationship between body mass index and fat removed. The intraglandular vessel diameters increased as resections approached the main feeding vessels located posterosuperior (facial artery) and anterosuperior (submental artery) to the submandibular gland. Conclusions The results suggest that to achieve exceptional neck contour the structures deep to the platysma often need to be addressed. The submandibular gland reduction can be safely performed with comprehensive understanding of its vascular anatomy

Traces of the Past in Income Inequality

    No full text
Article; Early AccessThe cumulative effect on income inequality of structural economic changes can only be observed in years. We discuss the implications of this point for the empirical approach to the inequality data through a simple linear regression setting. We show that determinants of inequality can only be found by (i) specifying a dynamic model, or (ii) using the average of changes in within-cohort inequalities as the dependent variable. The results obtained with the US and UK data show that these two methods deliver similar results, which significantly differ from those obtained through standard static regression analyses

Measurement of Single Top-Quark Production in the S-Channel in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13 Tev With the Atlas Detector

    No full text
A measurement of single top-quark production in the s-channel is performed in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). The analysis is performed on events with an electron or muon, missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets in the final state. A discriminant based on matrix element calculations is used to separate single-top-quark s-channel events from the main background contributions, which are top-quark pair production and W-boson production in association with jets. The observed (expected) signal significance over the background-only hypothesis is 3.3 (3.9) standard deviations, and the measured cross-section is sigma = 8.2(-2.9)(+3.5) pb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction of sigma(SM) = 10.32(-0.36)(+0.40) pb.ANPCyT, Argentina; YerPhI, Armenia; ARC, Australia; BMWFW, Austria; FWF, Austria; ANAS, Azerbaijan; CNPq, Brazil; FAPESP, Brazil; NSERC, Canada; NRC, Canada; CFI, Canada; CERN; ANID, Chile; CAS, China; MOST, China; NSFC, China; Minciencias, Colombia; MEYS CR, Czech Republic; DNRF, Denmark; DNSRC, Denmark; IN2P3-CNRS, France; CEA-DRF/IRFU, France; SRNSFG, Georgia; BMBF, Germany; HGF, Germany; MPG, Germany; GSRI, Greece; RGC, China; Hong Kong SAR, China; ISF, Israel; Benoziyo Center, Israel; INFN, Italy; MEXT, Japan; JSPS, Japan; CNRST, Morocco; NWO, Netherlands; RCN, Norway; MEiN, Poland; FCT, Portugal; MNE/IFA, Romania; MESTD, Serbia; MSSR, Slovakia; ARRS, Slovenia; MIZS, Slovenia; DSI/NRF, South Africa; MICINN, Spain; SRC, Sweden; Wallenberg Foundation, Sweden; SERI, Switzerland; SNSF, Switzerland; Canton of Bern, Switzerland; Canton of Geneva, Switzerland; MOST, Taiwan; TENMAK, Turkiye; STFC, United Kingdom; DOE, United States of America; NSF, United States of America; BCKDF, Canada; CANARIE, Canada; Compute Canada, Canada; CRC, Canada; PRIMUS, Czech Republic [21/SCI/017]; UNCE, Czech Republic [SCI/013]; COST, European Union; ERC, European Union; ERDF, European Union; Horizon 2020, European Union; Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, European Union; Investissements d'Avenir Labex, France; Investissements d'Avenir Idex, France; ANR, France; DFG, Germany; AvH Foundation, Germany; Herakleitos programme - EU-ESF, Greece; Thales programme - EU-ESF, Greece; Aristeia programme - EU-ESF, Greece; Greek NSRF, Greece; BSF-NSF, Israel; MINERVA, Israel; Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, Norway; NCN, Poland; NAWA, Poland; La Caixa Banking Foundation, Spain; CERCA Programme Generalitat de Catalunya, Spain; PROMETEO Programme Generalitat Valenciana, Spain; GenT Programme Generalitat Valenciana, Spain; Goran Gustafssons Stiftelse, Sweden; Royal Society, United Kingdom; Leverhulme Trust, United KingdomWe acknowledge the support of ANPCyT, Argentina; YerPhI, Armenia; ARC, Australia; BMWFW and FWF, Austria; ANAS, Azerbaijan; CNPq and FAPESP, Brazil; NSERC, NRC and CFI, Canada; CERN; ANID, Chile; CAS, MOST and NSFC, China; Minciencias, Colombia; MEYS CR, Czech Republic; DNRF and DNSRC, Denmark; IN2P3-CNRS and CEA-DRF/IRFU, France; SRNSFG, Georgia; BMBF, HGF and MPG, Germany; GSRI, Greece; RGC and Hong Kong SAR, China; ISF and Benoziyo Center, Israel; INFN, Italy; MEXT and JSPS, Japan; CNRST, Morocco; NWO, Netherlands; RCN, Norway; MEiN, Poland; FCT, Portugal; MNE/IFA, Romania; MESTD, Serbia; MSSR, Slovakia; ARRS and MIZS, Slovenia; DSI/NRF, South Africa; MICINN, Spain; SRC and Wallenberg Foundation, Sweden; SERI, SNSF and Cantons of Bern and Geneva, Switzerland; MOST, Taiwan; TENMAK, Turkiye; STFC, United Kingdom; DOE and NSF, United States of America. No full text
Article; Early AccessObjective: This study aims to evaluate the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occludin (Occ), and tricellulin (Tric) in periodontitis, as well as their alterations due to smoking. Background: Tight junctions (TJ), which consist of transmembrane and cytoplasmic scaffolding proteins, connect the epithelial cells of the periodontium. Occ, claudins, junctional adhesion molecules, and Tric are transmembrane TJ proteins found at the cell membrane. The transmembrane TJ proteins and the intracellular cytoskeleton are directly linked by cytoplasmic scaffolding proteins such as ZO-1. Although the functions and locations of these molecules have been defined, their behavior in periodontal inflammation is unknown. Methods: The study included four groups: individuals with periodontal health without smoking (C; n = 31), individuals with generalized Stage III periodontitis without smoking (P; n = 28), individuals with periodontal health while smoking (CS; n = 22), and individuals with generalized Stage III periodontitis while smoking (PS; n = 18). Clinical periodontal parameters were recorded, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to examine ZO-1, Occ, Tric, and TNF-α levels in GCF. Results: In the periodontitis groups, clinical parameters were significantly higher (p .001). The site-specific levels of TNF-α, ZO-1, Tric, and Occ in the P group were statistically higher than those in the other groups (p .05). TNF-α, probing pocket depth (PPD), and bleeding on probing (BOP) exhibited positive correlations with all TJ proteins (p .005). Conclusions: Smoking could potentially affect the levels of epithelial TJ proteins in the GCF, thereby potentially playing a significant role in the pathogenesis of the periodontal disease. © 2023 The Authors. In the present study, a blockchain-based application architecture is proposed that uses smart contracts and homomorphic cryptography to allow statistical calculations on confidential data provided by third parties. Blockchain systems provide security features such as integrity and fault tolerance, while homomorphic encryption preserves data confidentiality. In addition to these basic security principles of blockchain, approaches that can improve security and safety during data transfer and storage were also designed. Although similar topics have been encountered in the literature, this thesis differs from other studies since it performs linear regression analysis in an Ethereum smart contract. In the scope of the study, one smart contract was developed for the Ethereum blockchain, and user scripts were written to send data to the smart contract and read data from it. The sample scenario of this study was developed through linear regression analysis. Encrypted data are collected from third parties and sent to the smart contract through linear regression analysis. Encrypted data received by the smart contract was recorded by homomorphically adding them to the relevant variables. Later, a user who carries authority to read encrypted data from the smart contract reads these values and performs their calculations. In the later sections of the study, the design, implementation, and results based on different homomorphic encryption key-lengths of the proposed system are presented. The numerical results of the application show how much time and gas fees are consumed by transactions with different key-lengths sent to the smart contract. Similarities and differences in the gas fee and time consumption of data with varied key lengths and their reasons are examined. In addition, in the evaluation section, light is shed on the security improvements brought about by the proposed system. The proposed architecture was developed within a general perspective which is applicable to all other statistical calculations. If desired, the application steps can be repeated to be applied to different statistical calculations. The study demonstrates that a blockchain-based data-sharing mechanism with homomorphic calculations can be implemented through a smart contract, and that improvements can be made in protecting data from unauthorized users.

Two-dimensional (2D) Transition Metal Carbides (TMCs) draw attention in many applications, especially in advanced electronics, due to their physical and chemical properties. In order for these materials to be used in practice, they must be produced in a controlled and reproducible manner. Within the scope of this thesis, it is aimed to develop a cost-effective, scalable, and reproducible chemical vapor deposition (CVD) based process for the controlled, large lateral size, high quality production of 2D TMCs. In this context, the effects of CVD process parameters such as the reaction temperature and time; the catalyst presence, type and the amount of catalyst on the grown 2D Mo2C are investigated with detailed characterization studies (Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Raman Spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Optical Microscope (OM), X-Ray Spectroscopy (XPS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersion Spectrometer (EDS)). Thus, with the completed studies, the effect of the processing parameters on the formed crystal structure was examined and besides the studies on the establishment of the relationship between the process and the structure; calculations related to kinetics and activation energy for controlled synthesis were implemented; the dominant mechanisms for the formation and growth of these crystals have been determined. In this context, it is thought that the completed study will make an important contribution to the understanding of the augmentation of 2D TMCs with the CVD method and to the field of 2D materials in general.İki boyutlu (2B) Geçiş Metali Karbürler (GMK), sahip oldukları fiziksel ve kimyasal özelliklerinden dolayı ileri elektronikler başta olmak üzere birçok uygulamada dikkat çekmektedirler.

Being Modern: Turkey and Turkish Pavilion at Expo 58

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to examine how Turkey's architecture evolved during the 1950s by focusing on the Turkish Pavilion at Expo 58. Although the pavilion was situated in Brussels for merely six months, there were plans to reconstruct it in Turkey once the Expo concluded. Unfortunately, this plan was never realized, and the pavilion was eventually forgotten. Nevertheless, despite its short existence, the pavilion holds significance in Turkish architectural literature as a remarkable instance of modern architecture. In contrast to initial assessments that primarily focused on the Pavilion's formal characteristics, this paper aims to present the Pavilion's unique architectural features. By doing so, the goal is to expand the analysis beyond the physical structure itself. This includes providing a brief overview of the broader context of Turkey and the world during the 1950s, as well as Turkish participation in this significant event. Through an examination of this particular case, the paper uncovers contrasting viewpoints regarding the modernist ideals prevalent during that era. My objective is to explore the concept of multiple modernities and how they manifest in relation to this case study.

Prediction of Epilepsy Seizures and Design Warning System by Using Single Channel EMG Signals

    No full text
European Biotechnology Congress 2023Epilepsy is a neurological disease that affects many people worldwide and makes daily life difficult for individuals. The disease's basic mechanism is sudden and uncontrolled discharges between brain cells known as neurons, which result in convulsions in the body and even loss of consciousness may occur. However, the main factor that poses the risk of death for epilepsy patients is falls and blows to the head. This study proposes a machine-learning-based prototype warning system to minimize the risk of sudden falls and death by predicting tonic-clonic seizures, and then warning the patient. EMG signals of epilepsy patients and healthy control subjects were recorded from the right and left deltoids and biceps. Time domain signal processing analysis methods were done to extract features. To select single channels t-test was performed on each channel of EMG and a right deltoid channel was selected due to the highest number of features that show a significant difference (p0.05) between the pre-seizure and healthy segments. A 5-fold cross-validation method was used to split data to train and test subsets. Between SVM and KNN classifiers, 7-NN achieved the highest average accuracy with a 98.63 rate

Controlling the Molecular Structure and Electrical Conductivity of DNA via Photoswitch Molecules

The 3rd BEYOND 2023: Computational Science, Mathematical Modeling and Engineering Conference TOBB University of Economics and Technology, Ankara-Turkey, 19-20 October 2023The ever-increasing size of digital data requires novel storage techniques and materials that provide data storage densities surpassing today’s semiconductors. It is also important to write, read and store at a low cost and in an energy efficient manner. Biomolecules such as DNA and RNA, which are the fundamental building blocks for genetic information, are considered as a solution to this problem. Over the last two decades, it has been shown that the electrical conduction of DNA can be controlled by sequence, environmental factors and doping with different molecules. Uncovering the mechanisms of these effects is important to create DNA based circuits with desired properties. It is also known that light-sensitive molecules such as azobenzene, butadiene and stilbene change their structure (cis/trans) when excited by light of different wavelengths, and such molecules are called photoswitch molecules. Here, we investigated whether the conductivity of DNA can be controlled with the help of photoswitch molecules using atomistic and quantum mechanical methods. In this presentation, we first discuss the results of the molecular dynamic trajectories and the effect of the attached photoswitch molecules on the selected DNA sequences. Then we used clustering algorithms to find the most representative molecular conformation for further analysis. Finally, the electrical conductivities of the bare DNA and the azobenzene (cis and trans) attached DNA were calculated using DFT and Green Function based transport calculations. We demonstrated that, the photoswitch molecules can be used to tune the conductivity of DNA
