Beyond narratives of decline versus success: retirement through the lens of a diary

    No full text
Retirement is rarely conceptualised in terms of learning and development. However, as the end of professional activity approaches, many people begin to reflect deeply on the past, present, and future of their lives. This potentially profound reflection involves a complex process of learning and development to which research has paid too little attention. This article places the voice of a retiree at the centre of the study and provides a nuanced understanding of retirement, sensitive to the changes and difficulties of narrative sense-making activity in this transition, with all its ambiguities and complexities. The article analyses the 24-year diary of a man who goes through retirement, exploring the narrative sense-making dynamics by which this diarist interprets his retirement: initially it is mentioned with a combination of desire, idealisation, fear, and insecurity; then it is experienced as a deep personal crisis with depression; and afterward it is reinterpreted in a nuanced, positive, and constructive way. The analysis reveals the intertwining of cultural and personal dimensions in narrative sense-making. Sense-making around retirement is not passive or merely descriptive of the event, but instead is an integral part of what the process of retirement itself can become

    No full text

Child-To-Parent Aggression Questionnaire (CPAQ) and Reasons for Aggression Questionnaire (RAQ): Psychometric Properties in a Sample of Ecuadorian Adolescents

    No full text
Child-to-parent violence occurs when a child exerts violence toward their caregivers. Given the rise of this phenomenon, valid measurement tools are needed to identify the occurrence and underlying motives of this violence. Currently, most measures have been validated in Western populations. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Child-to-Parent Aggression Questionnaire (CPAQ) and the Reasons for Aggression Questionnaire (RAQ) among 527 Ecuadorian adolescents aged 10 to 18 years (M = 13.10; SD = 2.04). Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were performed to assess internal structure validity. The Inventory Parental-Peer Attachment (IPPA) was used for convergent validity. A single-factor structure for violence toward both the mother (CPAQ-M) and the father (CPAQ-F) was found in EFA and confirmed in CFA. The two-factor structure (psychological and physical violence) presented good fit indices as well. The expected relationships between the CPAQ and the IPPA (total score and the Communication, Trust and, Alienation subdimen sions) were found. Concerning the RAQ, a single-factor structure was confirmed for the Reasons for annoying (RAQ-A) and the Reason for hitting (RAQ-H) directed toward both parents. Additionally, the CFA confirmed that the three-factor structure (instrumental, affective, and defensive reasons) showed a good fit to the data for both the mother and the father. Internal consistency was also excellent in each parallel version with values > .90. In conclusion, the CPAQ emerges as a valuable instrument suitable for application within the adolescent Ecuadorian population, while the RAQ shows promise as an instrument for similar use within this demographic

Global and Diverse Ensemble Model for Regression

Diversity is a fundamental component in ensemble methods, crucial for enhancing the overall performance and robustness of predictive models. In bagging and boosting, diversity is implicitly generated through the data sampling process. In stacking, diversity is introduced by incorporating heterogeneous machine learning models as base learners, and an error function is created to focus on minimizing the meta-learner’s overall errors. Some models promote diversity directly within the error function; however, they often prioritize generating competitive and diverse individual learners, neglecting the necessity of creating an ensemble that is collectively accurate, as seen in stacking, whilst ensuring diversity among its members. Motivated by this point, two ensemble models are proposed in this manuscript, named Global and Diverse Ensemble Methods. These models incorporate implicit diversity through data, diversity in the heterogeneity of base learners, and an error function designed to produce a competitive overall ensemble with diverse individuals. The two diversity proposals included in the models are negative correlation and squared Pearson correlation. In both cases, the error function incorporates the minimization of the ensemble’s overall error (global error measure) in addition to promoting diversity. The proposed methods have been rigorously tested on 45 publicly available regression datasets using shallow base learners, as well as on 7 additional datasets using deep base learners, yielding very promising results. These findings underscore the importance of integrating these diversity-promoting elements and minimizing the global errors of the ensemble, rather than focusing solely on the errors of individual base learners, in the design of ensemble methods.

A Systematic Review with a Sustainable Focus

Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered, inquiry-based approach in which students design and execute projects that address meaningful challenges. Over time, PBL has been adapted across various educational levels, disciplines, and cultural contexts, leading to a diverse body of knowledge. Given these variations, it is crucial to systematize existing research to identify well-established aspects and areas that require further exploration. This study conducts a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. It uses the foundational PBL model as a reference to analyze its essential elements in design and implementation, particularly in terms of their contribution to sustainable education. A total of 25 studies were included in the final review sample. The research aims to examine current practices and identify gaps or inconsistencies in application. The qualitative analysis highlights crucial aspects such as project design, evaluation strategies, and interdisciplinary alignment. Findings reveal challenges in ensuring consistency across practices, with a predominant focus on procedural execution. However, the review also uncovers that existing studies address cognitive and socio-emotional dimensions in ways that require further investigation. Based on these findings, the study proposes a refined framework for the implementation of PBL, aiming to guide more effective and context-sensitive applications. These findings underscore the need for further exploration of how PBL can holistically support learner growth, enhance engagement, and contribute to more sustainable and impactful educational practices. Theoretical implications point to a deeper understanding of how PBL can integrate cognitive, emotional, and interdisciplinary components to foster this holistic development, while operational implications highlight the importance of institutional support, teacher training, and flexible curricular policies to ensure successful and sustainable implementation
