INFLUENCE OF IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING PROGRAMMES ON BEHAVIOUR CHANGE OF PUPILS IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN KISII COUNTY, KENYA
FULL TEXTA well-implemented guidance and counselling programme fosters a positive behaviour among pupils in public primary schools. There are persistent incidences of substance and alcohol abuse, absenteeism, early pregnancies, premarital sex, lack of respect for authority and many school dropouts in public primary schools in Kisii County. There is a gap in assessing what is influencing the persistence of this misbehavior as it had not been empirically investigated. The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of implementation strategies of guidance and counselling programmes on behaviour change of pupils in public primary schools in Kisii County, Kenya. The objectives of the study were; to evaluate the extent of application of compressive guidance and counselling programmes and their influence on behaviour change of pupils in Kisii county, to investigate the levels of training of teacher counsellors involved in the implementation strategy of guidance and counselling programmes and their influence on behavior change of pupils in Kisii county, to establish the extent of resource allocation strategy for the implementation of guidance and counselling programme and its influence on behavior change of pupils in Kisii county, to assess the role of head teachers` in the implementation strategies of guidance and counselling programmes and their influence on behavior change of pupils in Kisii County. The research may be a source of knowledge to teacher-counselors, head teachers, parents and the ministry of education. The study used correlation and descriptive research design. The targeted population consisted of 3,837 involving 2,745 standard eight pupils, 696 teacher counselor and 696 head teachers from 696 schools in Kisii County. The sample size comprised of 408 respondents with 69 teacher-counselors, 69 head teachers and 272 pupils from the selected schools. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling was used to collect data from samples. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected by administering questionnaires to pupils, teacher counselor, and head teachers. Questionnaires were pilot tested using Cronbach's coefficient Alpha to determine the internal consistency of the items and were found to have a reliability of 0.775. Descriptive statisticsused to analyze data involved frequencies, means, and percentages. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22 helped in data analysis. The results revealed positive relationship r = 0.084 between the level of application of comprehensive guidance and counseling and behavior change. Additionally, Comprehensive guidance and counseling, teacher training and the roles of head teachers were statistically insignificant to influence behavior change of pupils in public primary schools. However, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed that resource allocation is statistically significant in influencing the behavior change of pupils in public primary schools. In conclusion, well-organized counseling programmes, teacher counselors training and the roles of head teachers alone may not influence behaviour change of pupils. The study recommends an integrated approach to guidance and counselling with an emphasis on attitude and adequate resource allocation to make it a success
Gender Inequality in Enrolment for Accountancy Programme in Nigeria Federal Polytechnics: Emerging Issues in Education
FULL TEXTGender inequality exists all over the world, in access to and control of vital resources, in
educational, economic and political opportunities. This paper investigates gender differences in
enrollment pattern for Accountancy programme in Nigeria Federal polytechnics. The National
Bureau of Statistics (NBS) obtained data from the 2011, and 2012 editions of Annual Abstract of
Statistics Published. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Percentages were
used to describe annual changes in enrolment. Sex ratio was used to quantify the gender
dimension of enrolment. Result show that in all academic sessions examined, males are
consistently more in enrolment than females: more females are consistently enrolled at the ND
level than the HND level. This paper suggested that current efforts to-rebrand the Nigeria
education system must take cognizance of the level of disparities between males and females for
all programmes at the tertiary education level; and devise means of bridging the gender gapNational Research Fun
A Serial Number Based Identification Model for a Computer in a Wireless Local Area Network
FULL TEXTWith today’s technological evolution, wireless networks have become very common for
organizations, homes and public places. For any device to be authenticated and authorized to use
any of the wireless network services, it must first be identified then authenticated and authorized
to have access to the wireless network resources. One of the biggest challenges with
implementing wireless networks, though, is implementing the identification of the wireless
devices. Apart from port numbers and IP addresses at application and network layers
respectively, devices in a network use MAC addresses for identification at the physical layer.
However MAC addresses can be altered thereby compromising the security, robustness and
uniqueness qualities of a device identifier. This study therefore examined the inbuilt access and
use of a serial number prototype system as an alternative method of identifying devices in a
network. The model was constructed using evolutionary prototyping and proof of concept
methods through test runs and was found to actually identify a device in a network based on a
computer’s serial number. It is then recommended that prototype be scaled up then adopted as
network device identification methodNational Research Fun
The Emerging Roles and Challenges Facing Choir Directors in Contemporary Christian Worship
FULL TEXTThe discussions and the assertions of this paper concur with the words of Moody (1995) who observed
that the innovation of any kind exemplified in much of the present century’s music is diametrically
opposed to the continuation and expression of any kind of sacred traditions. Apparently every
Christian movement that emerges in the present world gives rise to sacred musical idioms that are
intended to advance the movement’s religious aspirations and identity. This explains why there are
diverse intercultural musical idioms in Christian worship today. While these religious and musical
phenomena are being acknowledged by many theologians and theomusicologists (Bediako, 1992;
Nercessian, 2000) as an inevitable trend, others have begun to raise the questions regarding their
theological relevance and role (Begbie, 2000; Robertson, 1990). Some of the questions being raised
include: to what extend are these idioms in tune with the heavenly sacred rite? Have they remained
true to the word of God? In other words, are they inspired by men and women of God or by the works
of the devil? These questions bring into focus challenges facing choirmasters and sacred music in the
contemporary African Church and hence the need to examine their role in spearheading an effective
and spiritually inspired Christian worship. Consequently, this paper seeks to correct an African
misconception of what a choirmaster is about besides outlining qualities befitting a good and a resultoriented
choirmaster. In addition, the paper will seek to explain the various intercultural musical
idioms utilized in Christian worship today besides suggesting ways in which to determine kinds of
musics that are appropriate for worship.National Research Fun
Supervision of Postgraduate Students: A Personal Experience
FULL TEXTSupervision can be defined as a dynamic facilitative process that encourages a set of tasks and
responsibilities which are performed in different domains. In research context, supervision
involves supervisors’ and post graduate students ‘tasks and responsibilities in the supervision
process. This paper will therefore concentrate on the four pillars of strengthening post graduate
supervision namely: power relations, scholarship, practices and processes involved in being a
supervisor. Power relations deal with the relationship between supervisors and supervisees. It
focuses on how we go about creating an inclusive and participatory learning environment that
enables students to acquire and further develop knowledge, methodological skills and writing
practices during the research process. Scholarship deals with the strategies used to induct
students into an academic community. It also deals with supervisors’ engagement with the
scholarly academic community in order to develop a sense of being an effective supervisor.
Practices in supervision refer to roles, responsibilities and activities of supervisors and students
that enhance students’ development. Supervision processes involved in being a supervisor focus
on the logistics of managing supervision with institutional requirements. The supervisors’ roles
and students ‘responsibilities and expectations will be discussed under this pillar. Couching and
mentoring in supervision as well as conventional and alternative approaches to supervision will
be illuminated. Challenges in supervision and possible solutions will be discussed.
Recommendations on how to improve the supervision process will be provided. It is hoped that
this paper will shed more light on how supervisors should go about the supervision process. As a
result, it is expected that supervisors will engage in effective and meaningful supervisionNational Research Fun
Can Church Conflict Inhibit Moral Development and Christian Formation? A Study of Emmanuel Kengeleni Parish of Mombasa Diocese in the Anglican Church of Kenya (2000- 2010)
FULL TEXTThe study set out to examine the impact of church conflict on moral development and Christian
formation with a special reference to Emmanuel Kengeleni Parish of Mombasa Diocese in the
Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) between 2000 -2010. For acquisition of data, the study used
qualitative methodology. The study found that the conflict had enormous effects on the church
and society both spiritually and socio-economically. As an opportunity, the conflict became a
source of church growth, expansion and Christian maturity whereas on the other hand it became
associated with retarded development, rivalry, strained relations and negative publicity. The
study recommends that church leaders be trained on conflict resolution and that churches ought
to provide avenues and structures of proactive conflict resolution mechanism in order to remain
the beckon of moral development and Christian formation in the society.National Research Fun
