DEVELOPING A THREAT MATRIX FOR SMART MOBILE DEVICES IN A UNIVERSITY NETWORK TOWARDS A SECURE LOCAL AREA NETWORK ECOSYSTEM
FULL TEXTThe need by staff and students to use smart mobile devices in university network is indisputable. This is because they help them to work and study more effectively as well as achieve better work-life balance. However smart mobile devices pose a security challenge as they continue to expand the corporate network unchecked thus increasing the attack surface. This creates a major security burden to security professionals who are supposed to ensure that smart mobile devices’ adherence to the security policy. The purpose of this study was to propose a solution on how to determine the likelihood of threat attack in a university network. The objectives of the study were to assess threats introduced to the university network through smart mobile devices, to develop a threat matrix that computes likelihood of threat attack, to identify security requirements needed for a secure university LAN ecosystem and to test and validate the matrix. Case study research design was adopted where Egerton University was selected as a case study with 384 respondents from all the campuses as target population. Response rate of 80% was recorded and considered sufficient for the study. The matrix was designed based on five of the ISO 27001’s domains which closely relate to operation of smart mobile devices in a corporate network. Regression analysis was used to determine the Functional weights to compute likelihood of attack. The matrix was implemented as a web-based application using Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) as server-side scripting language, MySQL was employed as a database engine and Bootstrap 4 was used for styling user interface. The developed threat matrix acted as threat and risk assessment tool to provide recommendations that maximize the protection of confidentiality, integrity and availability of university data while still providing functionality and usability of smart mobile devices
EFFECTS OF HUMAN RESOURCE INFORMATION SYSTEMS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SACCOS IN KENYA A SURVEY OF SELECTED SACCOS.
FULL TEXTThe human resource information system is a concept which utilizes the information technology for effective management of the human resource, its functions and applications. It has been established through empirical review that more of the organizations have not been able to use the HRIS for strategic decision making in human resource department. This study will benefit the Sacco management, human resource department and the human resource personnel and scholars in the human resource specialization in applying strategic decision making in human resource management based on the information obtained from HRIS. The main purpose of the research was to investigate the effects of human resource information system functions on organization performance a survey of selected Saccos in Kenya. This was necessitated by the fact that despite the Saccos having the HRIS modules there has not been a study to show on how these modules affect the organization performance. The study therefore aimed to explore the effect of e-training and development systems, e-performance management systems, estaffing systems and e-human resource planning systems on organization performance in Saccos. The theories and models underpinning the study included technology acceptance model the systems theory and human resource information system model and the resource flow model. The study employed a cross sectional survey design which had the census technique which targeted 54 respondents and purposive sampling was used to select the 54 respondents who were mainly the employees in the human resource department. Questionnaires was used as the data collection instruments and data were qualitative and quantitative in nature. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and correlation and presented in tables. The validity and reliability of the instrument was determined by Cronbach alpha. The results showed that E-training and development, Eperformance management and E-staffing have a significant effect on the performance of Saccos with the p value being 0.001, 0.004 and 0.023 respectively where p, 0.05. The study therefore recommended that management should engage more in strategic decision making using the HRIS system and provide further assistance in human resource planning and training in the use of HRIS

Popular Music Education: Insights from Tabuley’s ‘Muzina’
FULL TEXTTabu Ley Rocherou was a renowned popular musician and songwriter. Most listeners to his music
knew/know him for his secular popular music themes, structures and performance styles. However, his
song ‘Muzina’ is arguably his best rendered Christian worship music in terms of thematic concerns,
choice of lyrics, development, structure and performance techniques – albeit conceived along popular
and secular dance music styles. In this paper, I endeavour to unearth, enumerate, discuss, elaborate and
demonstrate critical song writing nuggets evident in Tabu Ley’s ‘Muzina’ for purposes of informing
pathways and filling knowledge gaps in popular music education. The paper is underpinned by popular
music composition, performance and analysis theories and common practices that cut across secular
and sacred genres. Song lyrics and recorded music form key units of discussion and analysis that drive
coherent debatable issues – generally in popular music studies and specifically in song writing practice.
Eventually, the paper generates and recommends several best practices for song writing as exemplified
in Tabu Ley’s ‘Muzina’. The insights will, hopefully, be informative to upcoming and experienced song
writers, popular musicians (performers and composers) and music educators at all levels. This paper is
premised on the fact that listening and deeply analysing popular hit songs like Muzina is a recipe for
nurturing and rejuvenating song writing skills.National Research Fun

Effect Of Firms’ Capital Structure On Financial Performance: Evidence From Nigerian Listed Consumer Goods Industries.
FULL TEXTThis paper assessed the effect of firms’ capital structure on financial performance of Nigerian
listed consumer goods industries. The study utilised secondary data gathered from the published
annual report and accounts of fourteen (14) sampled consumer goods industries for the period of
6 years from 2011 to 2016, selected according to their data availability and time constrain from
seventeen (17) industries that are operating on the floor of Nigerian Stock Exchange as at
December, 2016. The study make used of panel data regression analysis using STATA 14.0.
Based on the results from the analysis, it was found out that there is a positive and significant
relationship between the dependent and the independent variables. This mean that a reasonable
combination of debt and equity share capital enables Nigerian consumer goods industries to
increase their financial performance. It was therefore recommends that, debt should be use by the
companies only to the point where its benefit should not exceeds to total cost. The debt should be
long-term in nature. Moreover, government should try as much as possible to reduce the cost of
borrowing to enable firm’s achieve a reasonable combination of debt into their capital structure
and enjoy the relative tax savings advantage of the debt.National Research Fun
Tutors’ Attitudes Towards Integration Of Adaptive Technology Devices For Visually Impaired Student Teachers In Primary Teacher Training Colleges In Kenya
FULL TEXTAdaptive technology devices improve the quality of education and remove learning barriers for
the Visually Impaired learners. This paper is a report of a study that assessed the tutors’ attitudes
towards integration of adaptive technology devices for Visually Impaired (VI) student teachers in
the instructional process in primary Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) in Kenya based on the
diffusion of innovation theory by Rogers. The study adopted a Mixed Methods research
approach. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the
quantitative data. This study revealed among other things that, tutor training on integration of
adaptive technology was lacking, and the tutors viewed integration of adaptive technology as
valuable but lacking. The paper recommended for provision of adequate adaptive technology
devices for VI student teachers by the government, parents, communities and donors. Tutors
should be sensitized and trained on the use of adaptive technology devices. The study sheds light
on the challenges influencing the integration of adaptive technology in instruction for VI
students.National Research Fun
Efficacy of Beneficiary Accountability on Implementation of Development Projects: A Comparative Analysis of Machakos and Embu County, Kenya
FULL TEXTThe purpose of this research study was to Efficacy of Beneficiary Accountability on Implementation of Development
Projects. A Comparative Analysis of Machakos and Embu County, Kenya. The study was guided by the main determinants of
Monitoring and Evaluation which was beneficiary accountability. The moderating effects were government funding and disbursement of
funds. The research adopted a Comparative research design with a mixed method centered within a wider exploratory, cross-sectional
framework. The study was conducted in Machakos and Embu County. The population of this study was 132 staff mandated to monitor
and evaluate projects undertaken under County government devolved functions from Machakos and Embu County. The sample
distribution was 56 county government officials from Machakos and 43 from Embu since the two counties are relatively not
homogeneous in terms of geographical location in Kenya. A sample of 99 respondents was determined and individual elements in different
categories were also determined using a stratified random sampling technique. Questionnaires were distributed to respondents through a
“drop and pick later” method and were subjected to a reliability test using Cronbach’s alpha. Data were analyzed quantitatively by means
of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study findings indicated beneficiary accountability (β4 = 0.432; p-value = 0.002)
was found to have a significant effect respectively. The results obtained show the adjusted r square value of r2 = .514 which indicate that
when all the variables were combined, the multiple linear regression model could explain for approximately 51% of the variation in the
dependent variable by the variation in the independent variables on Implementation of County Projects. The study recommends that those
charged with the responsibility of carrying out M&E, should be appropriately empowered with the necessary knowledge in order to have
the grasp of how these tools are used in order to utilize them

ADOPTABILITY MODEL FOR DIGITAL FORENSIC EVIDENCE IN KENYA
FULL TEXTThe traditional techniques used by forensic investigators through the incident response operations include mostly pulling out the power cable of the suspected machines. This method normally causes a major interference of the evidence gathering process, hence the need for a better investigation method. The purpose of the study was to provide a means for the Kenya Police in evaluating their forensic adoptability in digital forensic evidence. This study was intended for those who were operating in the fields of computer forensics. The main objective was to investigate the adoptability of digital forensics in digital crime handling in Kenya. The researcher came up with a better method by analysing different existing methods and techniques in the literature review that allowed an investigator to scrutinize and perform forensic acquisition in a running system without inducing the effects of taint or forensic blurriness caused by scrutinizing and analyzing a running system, and collect evidence. Descriptive research design was adopted. Data collection was done by use of questionnaires and analysed through qualitative and quantitative techniques. The target population was drawn from the Kenya Police in Nakuru County, Kenya. Stratified and purposive sampling was applied so as to get the respondents based on the representative and feasibility of attaining the necessary data. The study established that there was low level of effectiveness regarding digital forensic services necessary to improve the admissibility of evidence in court. Similarly, technology used in institutions complied with legal requirements, however little review was being done to ensure that the system they used met quality needs of their organizations. Finally, although digital forensic tools existed in the institutions, respondents felt a dire need for additional digital forensic tools. The study recommends that more trainings and awareness program must be given priority by the Kenya Police as regards digital forensic evidence acquisition and handling. Likewise, it is prudent for the Kenya Police to channel more resources towards digital evidence acquisition tools and services to improve admissibility of digital evidence in courts
