The Influence of Public Perception of Old People on the Uptake of Institutionalised Care for the Aged in Nakuru County, Kenya
FULL TEXTThis study investigated public perception on age and aging and its influence on the uptake
of institutional care in Nakuru County, Kenya. This study was informed by the growing
population of older people around the world at a time when traditional social support
structures for older people are increasingly disintegrating. The disintegration of social
support structures for older people, imply that society has to seek for alternative support
structures such as institutional care. Specifically the study examined perceived public
efficacy to address the needs of their aged dependants, public perception of the elderly
dependants’ self-efficacy, and public perception of institutional efficacy in taking care of
the aged and socio-cultural factors on the one hand and their influence on the uptake of
institutional care for the elderly. A pilot study was carried at Kericho County to determine
validity and reliability of the study. The reliability coefficient of 0.862 and validity of
79.4% were attained hence the tool was both reliable and valid. The study was guided by
exploratory research design. The study engaged 400 respondents, who were selected
through purposive and stratified random sampling. Data for the study was collected through
the use of questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The results vividly reveal that older
people are respected and valued and also play a crucial roles in the society. Unfortunately,
the result loosely indicates that some older people face older abuse and are less tolerated.
The regression results also indicate that willingness to accept formal care services is
influenced negatively by elder role but negatively influenced by tolerance (measured as the
intolerance level of the society against the elderly people). Thus, it is important to consider
the roles actual significance of the elderly people in the society and their societal regards
before marketing the services.1. National Research Fund

Morphological and Semantic Idiosyncrasy: A Case Study of Mbusii and Lion De; Teketeke Radio Show
FULL TEXTThis study investigated morphological and semantic idiosyncrasies witnessed in Teke-Teke
Radio Show presented by Kenyan radio personalities, Mbusii and Lion De, a Radio Jambo,
English cum Kiswahili prime time production. This study was informed by the observation
of acute deviations from linguistic regularities in respect to the Kenyan lingo at the
morphological and semantic levels by the two presenters and its fan base. These
idiosyncrasies witnessed in the two presenters it was noted had permeated into the linguistic
repertoire not only of their fan base but of some cadre of the general Kenyan populace, thus
in some way this repertoire it notably was slowly turning into a sociolect of some kind. This
study sought to illustrate linguistic idiosyncrasy as a phenomenon which is alive and very
relevant in the Kenyan sociolinguistic geography, this study further sought to illustrate
linguistic idiosyncrasy as precursor to language change at the level of a speech community,
this was evidenced by the proliferation of the linguistic peculiarities observed in the show
to general language use among some section of the Kenyan populace .The researcher
purposely sampled over twenty peculiar lexical items and idiomatic expressions from the
show and using a qualitative approach the researcher undertook a morphological and a
semantic analysis of the items in order to document their deviations from the linguistic
regularities. The research further made a survey of the presence of the aforesaid items in
regular language use by its fan base and other Kenyans in regular talk, this was aimed at
showing a link between linguistic idiosyncrasy and language change which is a universal
property of human language. This study will therefore go a long way in giving evidence of
morphological and semantic idiosyncrasies in language use and it will also cement the
notion of idiosyncrasy as precursor of language change.1. National Research Fund

used to test the significance of the stated hypothesis at the alpha level (α = 0.05). The qualitative data was
thematically analysed based on the objectives and presented through texts. All analysis was done using the
statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. The findings revealed that there was a relationship
between emerging forms of bullying and self-esteem R 2 =.388 (38.8%)
A MODEL FOR DETECTING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE POLICY VIOLATIONS IN A CLOUD ENVIRONMENT
FULL TEXTThe pervasiveness of the internet and available connectivity solutions brought about by cloud computing has led to an unprecedented increase in technologies built based on information technology infrastructures. This has improved the number of cloud users and substantially increasing the number of incidents related to the security of infrastructure and data in the recent past. Most organizations consider the deployment of different types of protection systems to curb various malicious activities. Organizations offer sophisticated monitoring and reporting capabilities to identify attacks against the cloud environment. Users with ill intentions have increasingly used the cloud as an attack vector due to its ubiquity, scalability and open nature despite the existence of policy violation detection systems necessitating the need to strengthen access policies from time to time. Policy violation detection plays a major role in information security by providing a systematic way of detection and interpreting attacks. Some of the known weaknesses of most detection tools are the generation of false positives or false alerts and the inability to perform analysis if traffic is encrypted as well as failure to detect and prevent attacks. This research was therefore concerned with the investigation of weaknesses of firewall and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) which are supported by the cloud. The information was then used to build and experiment on an improved model of a policy violation detection system. Experiments revealed the weakness in existing systems specifically IDS and firewalls. Unlike the existing systems, a new model designed to overcome the shortfall was able to detect both recognized and unrecognized attacks and signatures. Moreover, the model is capable of preventing the occurrence of false positives and terminates suspicious nodes in real time without human intervention. An additional area of application such as movement from data from one cloud to another is not achievable, because of the mixed environment of the cloud. This is a potential area for investigation in the future
Influence of Culture on Health Insurance Uptake Among Patients at Chogoria Mission Hospital, Tharaka Nithi County
FULL TEXTThe government of Kenya plans to largely finance Universal Health Coverage (UHC)
through the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). However, most of the Kenyan
population do not have health insurance cover. Studies have identified four main reasons
why individuals are not registered for any form of health insurance: affordability, value,
relevance and process. These reasons may be complicated by cultural and social beliefs, as
revealed by studies done in other middle and low- income countries. The aim of this study
was to describe cultural beliefs and practices that may have an influence on health
insurance uptake. We used a qualitative phenomenology study design over a period of 3
months at Chogoria Mission Hospital. The study used purposive sampling to recruit
participants from inpatient and outpatient departments. Through 20 in-depth interviews
using a semi structured design and utilizing the constant comparative method of analysis,
we identified the following themes: Chieftaincy, religious beliefs that purchasing health
insurance is a lack trust in the healing power of God and calling bad omen, patriarchal
culture, traditional medicine use, peer influence in purchasing insurance and Harambe as
factors that might have an influence on health insurance uptake. This study affirms the
other studies on cultural influence on the uptake of health insurance. However, unique to
this study; health insurance was associated with family and community dissociation. The
results of this study need to be explored more in details in other settings. This study
suggests that most reasons of non-enrolment are hinged on cultural motivation at various
level and degrees.1. National Research Fund

FULL TEXTVolunteer leaders‟ competence is emerging as one of the changes that both profit and non-profit organizations have to accommodate especially as more people look for opportunities to serve, learn, gain new organization experiences and derive personal fulfillment. The success or failure of any profit or non-profit organization largely depends on the efficiency of its human capital. Most non-profit organizations including churches depend on volunteer workers to take the position of leadership and management because of their limited resources. In this regard, this research aimed at assessing the influence of volunteer leader‟s competence on church performance. The study sought to determine the influence of volunteer leaders‟ commitment, emotional intelligence, personal attributes and leadership styles on church performance. The general objective of this study was to access the influence of volunteer leaders‟ competence on church performance: evidence from the Presbyterian Church of East Africa Nakuru East Presbytery, Kenya and was anchored on the Social Exchange Theory of Volunteerism and the Contingency Theory of Leadership that try to show how church performance relates to volunteer leaders‟ competence. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design and the design was deemed appropriate to the study because the research was seeking to establish a cause-effect relationship between volunteer leaders‟ competence and church performance. The target population of the study was 750 church leaders composed of 288 Church Elders and 462 Group Leaders. Nassiuma formula was used to obtain a sample size of 88 respondents after which Neyman allocation formula was used to proportionally allocate the sample size across the categories of the respondents giving a sample size of 33 elders and 55 group leaders. Volunteer leaders in all the eleven parishes were randomly selected. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire which was pretested to ensure content validity and also reliability at the recommended Cronbach alpha of 0.7. Collected data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Multiple linear regression was used to determine the relative effectives of the volunteer leaders‟ competence on church performance. Findings were presented in graphs and tables. The study revealed significant influence of volunteer leaders‟ commitment (t=4.356, p=0.00), emotional intelligence (t=3.012, p=0.003), personal attributes (t=4.654, p=0.00) and leadership styles (t=4.654, p=0.00) on performance of PCEA Nakuru East Presbytery.
