INFLUENCE OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE MANAGEMENT ON COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF TIER 1 COMMERCIAL BANKS IN NAKURU, KENYA
FULL TEXTTier one commercial banks in Kenya operate under an extremely competitive environment in which there is competition for market share, customer numbers, loan clients, deposits and profitability levels. One of the strategies that have been adopted for the purposes of building competitive advantages is the adoption of new technologies. However, the manner in which change management is undertaken is critical in the commercial banks gaining competitive advantages given the context that these technologies are often similar across the banks. This study therefore sought to examine the role of technological change management on the competitive advantage of tier one commercial banks. This study sought examine the influence of mobile banking applications, internet banking, electronic queue management system and deposit taking ATMs on competitive advantages of tier one commercial banks in Nakuru town. This study was guided by the Dynamic Capability Theory, the Technology Acceptance Theory and . This study used descriptive research design targeting seven Tier 1 banks operating in Nakuru town from which the accessible population was their management teams from operations, IT and customer care service department. The study used a census approach and purposively selected the respondents. The study used a pre-tested structured questionnaire to collect data for the study. Data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that mobile banking (β = 0.366, p ≤ 0.05), internet banking (β = 0.342, p ≤ 0.05), electronic queue management (β = 0.382, p ≤ 0.05) and deposit taking ATMs (β = 0.421, p ≤ 0.05) were all significant factors to the competitive advantage of Tier 1 banks in the study area. The study, therefore, recommends that; the commercial banks should need to invest in the development of universal mobile phone applications; the banks need to develop more internet applications that can be easily integrated on popular visitor platforms like whatsapp, Facebook and PayPal; there is need for system developers to further integrate the electronic queue management to the banking services, such as, mobile phone alerts. Finally, there is need for the banks to embark on an awareness campaign on the capability of the deposit taking ATMs
Exploring Strategies for Teaching Music and Aurals to the Hearing-Impaired Learners: The Case of Kakamega County, Kenya
Full textThis paper explores the strategies of teaching Music and aurals to the Hearing-Impaired
learners in Kakamega County, Kenya. It: establishes the challenges likely to be experienced
by learners with HI in handling Music; analyses pedagogical challenges likely to be faced by
potential music teachers of learners with HI in teaching Music and Strategies to be used in
teaching Music to this category of learners. A number of institutions dealing with learners
with HI were randomly sampled.Mumias Education Assessment Resource Centre (MEARC)
was used to provide information on the selection and placement procedure of learners with
disability. The study employed descriptive and experimental designs. Data was collected
using questionnaires, observation and interview schedules. Some learners were subjected to
selected teaching strategies (experimental group) whileotherswerenot (control group). Music
and aural tests were administered on these learners. Both purposive and random sampling
strategies were used to select target respondents. Collected data was subjected to content
analysis in which triangulation was employed to get views from different sources. Variables
were tested to make valid and reliable conclusions. The studyfound out that learners with HI
have a lot of potential in music and therefore can do music as a subject, their assessment
plays a big role in their learning ability, they can substitute their sense of hearing with their
sense of sight, feel and touch to learn Music and aurals; and, HI teachers are not trained in the
subject of Music. The study recommends that Learners with HI should be: provided with
adequate teaching and learning materials in Music, given an opportunity to study music as a
subject. Also, KISE should introduce Music as a subject as KICD and KNEC incorporates HI
concerns in their syllabi
The Nexus between Public Perception of the Elderly Person’s Self-Efficacy and the Uptake of Institutionalised Care for the Elderly in Nakuru County, Kenya
FULL TEXTThis study sought to determine the public perception of self-efficacy of the older people to take care of themselves. It was also intended to determine the factors influencing the uptake of formal care services in Kenya. The study engaged 400 respondents from Nakuru County, who were selected through purposive and stratified random sampling. Data was collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The results reveal that indeed the level of awareness of the existence of the formal care services in Kenya is very low and that majority of the interviewed respondents were reluctant to enrol their relatives to the formal care homes. The result further indicates that health and the psychosocial status of the older people influence the decision of the members of the community interviewed to enrol the older relatives in formal care homes. It emerged from the results that the majority of the people declined the use of the services despite agreeing that their older relatives faced challenges that would warrant their enrolment for the services. We, therefore, recommend that a marketing plan for the services to be designed with an inherent system societal perception re-engineering so that a positive attitude towards services be formed. Psychosocial therapy provision should also be a key service of the care services since it emerged that older people suffering neglect and abuse were the most likely to be enrolled where there’s the availability of services
Influence of Polythene Bag Alternatives on Compliance to Environmental Legislation on Polythene Bag Ban in Rongai Sub-County, Nakuru County, Kenya
FULL TEXTPolythene bags have been preferred for packaging purposes because they are
light in weight, cheap and resistant to degradation. Despite the benefits, poor
disposal of polythene causes degradation and pollution of soil, water, land
and air resources leading to health problems and climate change. Furthermore,
polythene kills the wild game, livestock and aquatic organisms. These
problems have led to the introduction of legislation banning polythene bags.
Reports of availability of these polythene bags and emergence of poor quality
alternatives present negative outcome of the environmental legislations.
Therefore, this research study was aimed at studying the influence of alternative
eco-friendly bags on compliance with the environmental legislation that
banned its use, with a view to improving its adoption in Rongai. The
descriptive research design was used in the study. A sample size of 259 respondents
was selected using proportionate stratified random sampling from a
target population of 18,377 households and 580 traders while purposively selected
6 key informants. Instruments used included Piloted questionnaires
(0.74 Cronbach’s alpha level) and focus group discussions. Data analysis was
done using SPSS version 20. Percentages were used in descriptive statistic
while Chi-square at 5% level of significance (∝ = 0.05) and correlation was
used in the inferential statistic. Findings indicated that 50% of respondents
used the outlawed propylene bags, the majority significantly agreed (p <
0.0001). It is suggested that there is need for promotion of eco-friendly bags
INFLUENCE OF CUSTOMER EMOTIONS ON CUSTOMER LOYALTY AMONG STAR-RATED HOTELS IN NORTH RIFT, KENYA
With business competition becoming more intense, the most important issues that
sellers face are on providing excellent quality products or services and keeping loyal customers
to ensure long-term profit to their organizations. As such, the development and sustainability of
customer loyalty is important in creating and maintaining competitive advantage. One way that
organizations can enhance customer loyalty is by cultivating positive emotional connection
through enhanced service experiences. The study sought to determine the relationship between
customer emotions and consumer loyalty among star-rated hotels in North Rift, Kenya. The
research adopted a descriptive survey research design. The target population for the study was
made of 1416 loyal customers from the fifteen (15) star-rated hotels in North Rift region of Kenya.
The sample size was 455 guests obtained using a stratified random sampling method. Data was
collected using a questionnaire. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was applied with R-value being
estimated to analyse and test hypotheses. The results of the study showed that customer emotions
played a significant role in achieving customer loyalty among star-rated hotels in the study area
(p < 0.05). Specifically, variables like felt comfortable, welcomed, contented, secure, important,
entertained, relaxed, elegant, cool, excited, sophisticated and respected among others were found
to enhance the loyalty of customers. On the other hand, negative emotions such as my request were
nullified, felt displeased, ignored, angry, anxious, discontent, worried, sad, and ashamed among
others were found to discourage customer loyalty. Therefore, the study recommends that hotels
should pursue positive customer emotions in order to enhance the loyalty of their customers

Optical Characterization Of Co:Zno Films Fabricated By Anodization For Photocatalytic Water Purification
Full textWhile the sixth sustainable development goal to be achieved by 2030 is clean
water and sanitation, there is still a global challenge in the supply of adequate clean water
due to population growth and urbanization. This necessitates coming up with more
affordable approaches of managing waste water. Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants
has proved to be one of the promising ways of purifying water. This study aimed at
preparing Cobalt doped ZnOfilms to be used in photocatalytic water purification. ZnO
films were fabricated by anodization and Cobalt incorporated. Heat treatment was done at
2500C. Optical characterization was done using a UV-VIS NIR spectrophotometer to
obtain reflectance data which aided in determining the optical properties of the films.
Data analysis showed a decrease in ZnO reflectance and optical band gap on
incorporation of Cobalt. This implied an increase in the absorption of the films which is a
fundamental property in photocatalytic water purification. Hence Cobalt doped ZnOfilms
have good photocatalytic properties and can be used for photocatalytic water purification
Machine Learning Sms Spam Detection Model
Full textMillions of shillings are lost by mobile phone users every year in Kenya due to SMs Spam,
a social engineering skill attempting to obtain sensitive information such as passwords,
Personal identification numbers and other details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity
in an electronic commerce. The design of efficient fraud detection algorithm and
techniques is key to reducing these losses. Fraud detection using machine learning is a new
approach of detecting fraud especially in Mobile commerce. The design of fraud detection
techniques in a mobile platform is challenging due to the non-stationary distribution of the
data. Most machine learning techniques especially in SMs Spam deal with one language. It
is in this background that the study will focus on a client side SMs Spam detection in
Kenya’s mobile using machine learning. Naive’s Bayes algorithm was used for this
purpose because it is highly scalable in text classification. The contributors of Corpus
include mobile service providers in Kenya and selected mobile phone users. Machine
learning and data mining experiments were conducted using WEKA .The results and
discussions are presented in form of descriptive statistics and detection metrics, the model
registered an overall classification accuracy of 96.1039%
