TRUE GRASP: Actors visualize and explore hidden limitations of an apparent win-win land management strategy in a MAB reserve

    Get PDF
"Win-win solutions might be short-lived. Government permission for smallholder farmers to extract and sell resin from a pine savanna biosphere-reserve in Mexico has settled a long dispute among different stakeholders in the short-term; however, forest production and conservation beyond 20 years are compromised due to low pine recruitment caused by competition with exotic grasses. Grass control practiced by farmers through grazing and fire has previously been discouraged by conservation authorities, which inadvertently limits long-term pine conservation and use. We describe the participatory design, rationale and simulation attributes of an educational, interactive, agent-based model that explores suites of management options and their economic and ecological outputs. We present and analyze the outcomes of four simulation workshops, where farmers and external-actors better grasped the complex ecological interactions involved in conserving and using pines in grazed pine savanna with exotic grasses, and discussed these findings with a long-term vision and tradeoff analysis approach.

"The study of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSD) in Mexico is scarce; therefore, their localization and causes are highly overlooked. The present paper examines the characterization of the DSGSD of Jungapeo and Las Pilas in eastern Michoacan state, currently active and endangering their inhabitants. An integrated study, including detailed lithology, morpho-structural inventories, analysis of land use, and pluviometric regime, was performed and complemented with differential global positioning system monitoring networks. Both landslides developed over highly weathered volcano-sedimentary rocks. On the one hand, the Jungapeo landslide has an estimated volume of 990,455 m3 with steady decreasing velocity rates from 41 to 15 cm/month in the first monitoring period to 13–3 cm/month in the last one. On the other hand, the Las Pilas landslide estimated volume is about 1,082,467 m3 with a stable velocity rate of 1.3 to 0.1 cm/month. Despite the multi-storeyed style of activity, two behaviors of instability were distinguished: slow deformation and secondary landslide stages. The conditioning factors for slow deformation in both DSGSD are the combination of weathered lithology with clay- and sand-rich content, and the shift toward intensive monoculture. The triggering factor is related to excess water produced by an inefficient flood-irrigation system that also generates an atypical acceleration behavior in both landslides during the dry season. The DSGSD activity thus predisposes the generation of tension cracks and secondary scarps from which the collateral landslides are triggered by atypical rainfall, such as that of 2010.

Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) permits to know spatial publication in a tissue of a variety of analytes as: proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nuclei acids and metabolites. Both techniques are relative recent and require a laborious process to perform one analysis. Nevertheless, the amount of information that can be obtained justifies the time required for it. Published protocols of sample preparation for these analyses have steps that can be improved in order to be easier or better performing. In this work we inquired these protocols and improve some steps. The main inconvenient with the IS-RT-PCR protocol is the difficulty of handling a histological cut on a glass slide. So in this work we investigated the performing of protocol in a leaf fragment that is preserved from epidermis to epidermis. We achieve a partial reaction in the leaf fragment. In MALDI-MSI the main improving points were keeping cut integrity while it is dried in an embedding media, and applying matrix solution in a homogenous manner. The best embedding media was 2% carboxymethylcellulose in 9.25% sucrose. For matrix application, we used an EPSON T50 inkjet printer, we found that black nozzle can dispatch drops of until 35 µm of diameter in a very precise manner. With this result we conclude that T50 printer is suitable and cheaper than commercial options. In the second chapter, we focused in characterizing calcium oxalate crystals of amaranth leaves."Instituto Potosino de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica A.C. The main motivation of this research work is to analyze and interpret the interaction of light with nanoparticle systems of different geometries by means of calculations using the Discrete Dipole Approximation, which allows us to obtain extinction, absorption and dispersion spectra for such systems; where the resonance of the surface plasmon (SPR), is observed. This SPR relates the size of the nanostructure and the wavelength that is applied, and we include in the calculation, the experimental condition such as all the calculated systems are immersed in water and irradiated under wavelength rang from 300 nm to 1100 nm. The systems were classified as isotropic and anysotropic systems. In the first instance we started by studying nanoparticles with spherical core-shell geometry conformed with different proportions of Au and SiO2, thus obtaining configurations of 5, 10, 20, 35 and 40 nm in diameter, three configurations with a shift of up to 200 nm towards the near infrared area, taking the SPR as reference for monometallic Au nanoparticles (520 to 550 nm). Regarding the isotropic systems, configuration arrays of NPs were made with a finite number of monometallic NPs of 5 nm radius, with two, three (ordered linearly and in the form of an equilateral triangle) and 4 NPs. In these arrays, the variables xxi considered were the number of nanoparticles and the distance between them (0, 2, 4 and 6 nm), obtaining spectra with very marked trends. When the NPs remained at 0 nm distance, the resonance curve was wider and less defined, and as function of the distance among the NPs, there were significant changes in the response of extinction efficiency of the systems and this is intimately related to the area that the NPs array shows to the irradiation light, i.e., the more distant were the nanoparticles the extinction efficiency was higher. There was also decided to support these array systems in SiO2, fixing previously the thichness of the support. Thus, previously we made tests taking different dimensions of the thickness (1, 2 and 3 nm), and by doing this, we proved that by increasing the thickness of the support, the efficiency of extinction decreases, and this is due to the optical properties of the support, but it was also verified that the support does not change the shift response in any way, that is to say, the SPR of supported Au arrays continues in the position calculated as being unsupported. In a third stage of the project, we decided to build photonic crystal configurations with 1D, 2D and 3D arrays, in order to observe their optical response. In this part, we built 15 configurations, of which the highest infrared shift was 370 nm for a 2D photonic crystal, which is a array of Au monometallic bars and an extinction efficiency of 7.5 AU. The second pronounced shift in the infrared region, was a 3D photonic crystal, but unlike the previous one, in this case the configuration of nanorods shows a plane of NRs separated from each other, and a second plane of NRs in opposite array, alternating to those placed horizontally. In this array the redshift registered was of 250 nm. Finally, we also built configurations of photonic crystals formed by monometallic and core-shell nanoparticles of 5 nm in radius, having displacements of up to 440 nm towards the near infrared, if we compare this response with pure Au systems.

These elements tend to concentrate in clay minerals, which in turn form fine grain sedimentary rocks such as shales and siltstones. Radiometry is a geophysical prospecting technique that is based on the measurement of gamma rays arising from the decay of isotopes of potassium, uranium and thorium, mainly, and allows to estimate the concentrations of these elements in a rock, or in a certain area. By means of a gamma ray spectral analysis it is possible to establish relationships between the radioactivity of a rock and aspects of its formation and deposit environment. In this work a radiometric study was carried out in turbiditic deposits of the Upper Cretaceous, located in the municipalities of Mexquitic and Ahualulco, in San Luis Potosí. The purpose of the analysis was to find differences between radioelement concentrations in different sub-environments of the system and try to link these differences with the lithostratigraphic characteristics, as well as with the deposit environments. The average concentrations indicate a level of medium-high radioactivity for sedimentary rocks, according to the IAEA, especially the concentrations of U and Th. The results of the study allowed to establish ranges of concentrations of both total radioactivity (TC), potassium (k), uranium (u) and thorium (Th) for each sub environment of the turbiditic system and in this way observe the differences between them.

This dissertation work addresses the stability problem of linear fractional order systems. The stability of this class of systems is determined by the location of the roots of the associated characteristic pseudo-polynomial. Due to the complexity in the calculation of the pseudo-polynomial roots, it is desirable to have methods that help us to determine the stability of the systems without having to calculate pseudo-polynomials roots. The Mikhailov stability criterion for linear integer order systems is a powerful and graphical tool to determine the stability without having to calculate the roots of the associated characteristic polynomial. In this work the extension of the Mikhailov criterion is presented for the case of fractional linear systems of commensurate order. Additionally, the generalization of the classic Stodola criterion is presented, which provides necessary stability conditions for this class of systems."Esta tesis fue elaborada en la División de Matemáticas Aplicadas del Instituto Potosino de Investigaci´on Científica y Tecnológica, A.C., bajo la dirección del Dr. Daniel Alejandro Melchor Aguilar. The taxonomy and diversity of Coleoptera associated with decomposing cacti is little known in Mexico, despite being a country with high diversity and endemism of cacti. In this work, we study the diversity of Coleoptera associated with cacti from a crassicaule scrubland within the "Barranca de Metztitlan" biosphere reserve, in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. Using plots placed in October 2016 and 2017, 11 Coleoptera species were recorded with 285 individuals in two decomposing cacti species: Isolatocereus dumortieri (Scheidweiler) Backeberg (1942) and Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Mart. ex Pfeiff.) Console (1897). The abundance patterns and composition were different between the years evaluated, although the richness and diversity varied little between the years of study. Isolatocereus dumortieri was the cactus with the greatest abundance and richness of coleopterans. The biannual analysis of the diversity of coleopterans associated with Cactaceae shows that the distribution of these species fluctuates between the years of study in the same seasonal period.

"In this paper we present a chemical representation of a chaotic system with only one stable equilibrium point. The approach invokes cooperative catalysis and slow-fast reactions, primarily. The obtained chemical based chaotic dynamical system preserves the eigenvalues of the unique and stable equilibrium point along with the Lyapunov’s dimension and exponents of the original one.

Robust H∞ control of glycemia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus via continous insulin plus Metformin

    Get PDF
"Several studies have shown that an adequate therapy for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can delay or prevent complications derived from this condition. To achieve the control objectives an adequate therapy should be performed by using insulin alone or in combination with an oral hypoglycemic agent. However, the key point of glycemic control is to determine the amount of insulin to be delivered. In order to achieve the above different strategies have been proposed, one of them is the design of feedback control algorithms. In this article a robust feedback control algorithm of glycemia in T2DM was designed. The algorithm determines the continuous insulin infusion to be delivered to maintain normoglycemia considering a combined therapy with a dose of metformin. The problem approach was to find a controller that minimized in the sense of the H? norm: i) the difference between the glycemia of a T2DM patient and a healthy subject (tracking problem) and ii) the effect of disturbances due to glucose intake and noise from a glucose sensor.
