    Relationship between the use of ICT and the degree and type of diversification

    Advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) has given way to a new genre of opportunities for companies expanding their horizons to explore new markets and to diversify their business. In this sense, the present study analyzes the impact that the use of ICT has on the degree and type of diversification of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). From a sample of 95 companies in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, it is evident that diversified companies show a higher level of use of ICT and this resource positively affects the degree of international diversification and the degree of relationship of business

    Cyber Physical System Based Proactive Collaborative Maintenance

    The aim of the MANTIS project is to provide a proactive maintenance service platform architecture based on Cyber Physical Systems. The platform will allow estimating future performance, predicting and preventing imminent failures and scheduling proactive maintenance. Maintenance is an important element that creates added value in the business processes and it also creates new business models with a stronger service orientation. Physical systems and the environment they work in are continuously monitored by a range of intelligent sensors, resulting in massive amounts of data, which characterise the usage history, working condition, location, movement and other physical properties of the systems. These systems are part of a larger network of heterogeneous and collaborative systems (e.g. vehicle fleets) connected via robust communication mechanisms able to operate in challenging environments. MANTIS consists of distributed processing chains that efficiently transform raw data into knowledge, while minimising the need for bandwidth. Sophisticated distributed sensing and decision-making functions are performed at different levels collaboratively, ranging from local nodes to locally optimise performance, bandwidth and maintenance; to cloud-based platforms that integrate information from diverse systems and execute distributed processing and analytics algorithms for global decision-making

    Short Messages Spam Filtering Using Sentiment Analysis

    In the same way that short instant messages are more and more used, spam and non-legitimate campaigns through this type of communication systems are growing up. Those campaigns, besides being an illegal online activity, are a direct threat to the privacy of the users. Previous short messages spam filtering techniques focus on automatic text classification and do not take message polarity into account. Focusing on phone SMS messages, this work demonstrates that it is possible to improve spam filtering in short message services using sentiment analysis techniques. Using a publicly available labelled (spam/legitimate) SMS dataset, we calculate the polarity of each message and aggregate the polarity score to the original dataset, creating new datasets. We compare the results of the best classifiers and filters over the different datasets (with and without polarity) in order to demonstrate the influence of the polarity. Experiments show that polarity score improves the SMS spam classification, on the one hand, reaching to a 98.91% of accuracy. And on the other hand, obtaining a result of 0 false positives with 98.67% of accuracy

    Three stage maturity model in SME's towards Industry 4.0

    Purpose: To address the challenges regarding the concept of Industry 4.0 and the diversification methodology and based on the strategic guidance towards Industry 4.0, we propose a process model as a guiding framework for Industry 4.0 collaborative diversification vision, strategy and action building. In this paper we suggest a stage process model to guide and train companies to identify new opportunities for diversification within Industry 4.0. Systematically carrying out the stages will take a company to their individual specific vision and collaborative vision between different companies in the Industry 4.0 scenario. Design/methodology/approach: This new collaborative diversification methodology involves industry within the pilot program; from the diversification and capacity assessment analysis of the company`s profile, skills and technologies that dominates, to identify the diversification opportunity map and its business modeling within the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Findings: The application of maturity models to the Industry 4.0 may help organizations to integrate this methodology into their culture. Results show a real need for guided support in developing a company-specific Industry 4.0 vision and specific project planning. Originality/value: Industry 4.0 promotes a vision where recent developments in information technology are expected to enable entirely new forms of cooperative engineering and manufacturing. The vision of industry 4.0 describes a whole new approach to business operations, and especially the production industries. To address the challenges regarding the concept of Industry 4.0 and the diversification methodology discussed above, and based on the strategic guidance towards Industry 4.0 (Erol, Schumacher & Sihn, 2016), we propose a unique process model as a guiding framework for Industry 4.0 collaborative diversification vision, strategy and action building

    A modified genetic algorithm applied to the elevator dispatching problem

    Reduction of passenger waiting time in a multiple elevator system is an important goal in the lift industry. Genetic algorithms (GAs) have been applied to the dispatching problem in vertical transportation. In this paper, we present an approach based on a GA with several relevant adjustments to adapt this type of algorithm to this problem. The algorithm serves calls currently registered in the system to create a dispatch plan, under the assumption that just one passenger has made each call (i.e. without passenger forecasting). We develop and investigate various versions of the GA incorporating one or more adjustments in this research area. The algorithms were implemented and evaluated using ELEVATE, for two different building configurations, in terms of incoming, outgoing and interfloor profiles. To compare results, one-factor analysis of variance tests were applied to passenger waiting times. The performance of the basic GA was significantly improved upon by making these adjustments. These adjustments turn out to be essential for a successful implementation of a GA in the dispatching problem

    Supporting CRUD Model Operations from EOL to SQL

    Model-based software development promises improvements in terms of quality and cost by raising the abstraction level of the development from code to models, but also requires mature techniques and tools. Although Eclipse Modelling Framework (EMF) introduces a default persistence mechanism for models, namely XMI, its usage is often limited as model size increases. To overcome this limitation, during the last years alternative persistence mechanisms have been proposed in order to store models in RDBMS and NoSQL databases. Under this new paradigm, model operations can be performed at model-level and persistence-level, e.g., mapping EOL model operations into SQL statements. In this paper, we extend our framework (called MQT) to support CRUD (Create, Read, Update and Delete) operations from model- (EOL) to persistence-level (SQL), using a streaming execution of queries at run-time. Through comparable evaluation metrics, we evaluate the performance and memory footprint of the framework usi ng the GraBaTs scenario

    Detection and Visualization of Android Malware Behavior

    Malware analysts still need to manually inspect malware samples that are considered suspicious by heuristic rules. They dissect software pieces and look for malware evidence in the code. The increasing number of malicious applications targeting Android devices raises the demand for analyzing them to find where the malcode is triggered when user interacts with them. In this paper a framework to monitor and visualize Android applications’ anomalous function calls is described. Our approach includes platformindependent application instrumentation, introducing hooks in order to trace restricted API functions used at runtime of the application. These function calls are collected at a central server where the application behavior filtering and a visualization take place. This can help Android malware analysts in visually inspecting what the application under study does, easily identifying such malicious functions

    Adaptive coatings based on polyaniline for direct 2D observation of diffusion processes in microfluidic systems

    Microfluidic devices are poised to dramatically influence the future of the process industry. Therefore the understanding and proper evaluation of the flow and mixing behaviour at microscale becomes a very important issue. In this study, the diffusion behaviour of two reacting solutions of HCl and NaOH were directly observed in a glass/polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic device using adaptive coatings based on the conductive polymer polyaniline that are covalently attached to the microchannel walls. The two liquid streams were combined at the junction of a Y-shaped microchannel, and allowed to diffuse into each other and react. The results showed excellent correlation between optical observation of the diffusion process and the numerical results. A numerical model which is based on finite volume method (FVM) discretisation of steady Navier-Stokes (fluid flow) equations and mass transport equations without reactions was used to calculate the flow variables at discrete points in the finite volume mesh element. The high correlation between theory and practical data indicates the potential of such coatings to monitor diffusion processes and mixing behaviour inside microfluidic channels in a dye free environment

    El trabajo que tienes entre manos es la síntesis de las reflexiones que responsables y socios de diferentes cooperativas realizan sobre los retos y los dilemas que se le presentan al cooperativismo de Mondragón en este nuevo ciclo histórico. El punto de partida del análisis se encuentra en el convulso período coincidente con la quiebra de Fagor Electrodomésticos en octubre de 2013, acontecimiento que marca un antes y un después en la historia del cooperativismo de Mondragón. La envergadura del acontecimiento nos ha impulsado a plantear este análisis desde la necesidad, por una parte, de entender las claves que han operado en el fondo de esta crisis y desde la convicción, por otra parte, de que los aprendizajes de la experiencia de esta emblemática cooperativa serán imprescindibles para asentar las bases de un cooperativismo revitalizado que, a su vez, nos posibilitará enfrentar con una mayor conciencia y mejores garantías los desafíos económicos, sociales y humanos que se nos presentan en este nuevo ciclo histórico
