Low Cost Photonic Sensor for in-Line Oil Quality Monitoring: Methodological Development Process towards Uncertainty Mitigation

    Get PDF
Lubricant and hydraulic fluid ageing impacts the performance of the machines, gears, transmissions or automatisms where they are being used. This manuscript describes the work accomplished for bringing an innovative measurement concept for analysing the physical- chemical properties of these fluids, to a real industrial product ready to be integrated into different industrial equipment. The steps taken to deal with uncertainties and evolving requirements while progressing in the sensor development are described, covering the stages of theoretical formulation of the problem, optical and fluidic simulations, sensor prototype development and tests. The sensor working principle is based on a combination of transmittance and diffuse reflectance photonic inspection of the fluid sample that is collected in a microcavity through a standard hydraulic fitting. Photonics, electronics, micro-mechanics, fluidics, data processing and analysis has been merged with a deep knowledge in the lubricant degradation process to develop a sensor solution that is able to measure the Oil Degradation Index, Oil Oxidation, Acid Number, Ruler and Membrane Patch Colorimetry data from an inservice lubricating oil sample. The photonic micro sensor presented here offers a powerful tool that operates directly immersed in the fluid, at an economic cost and compacted size for inline oil degradation monitoring

Barne-komunikazioa kooperatibetan: entzunak sentitzen dira langileak? Kasu-azterketa MONDRAGONen

    Get PDF
Barne-komunikazioa erabakigarria da arrakastadun erakundeetan; izan ere, eragiten du, besteak beste, langileen motibazioan, parte-hartzean eta produktibitatean. Halere, kontuan izan behar dugu barne-komunikazioaren praktika eraginkorrak eskatzen duela informatzeaz gain, entzutea. Hain zuzen ere, artikulu honen helburua da jakitea entzunak sentitzen ote diren kooperatibetako langileak. Era berean, eta ezberdintasunik dagoen jakite aldera, pertzepzio horiek guztiak ikertu dira kontuan izanik honako aldagai hauek: organoetako partaide izan ala ez, eskulan mota, lan-egoera eta egoitza. Horretarako, MONDRAGONeko kooperatiba bateko 224 langilek betetako galdetegiaz gain, zortzi elkarrizketa erdi egituratu egin dira. Jasotako datuek aditzera ematen dutenaren arabera, langileen pertzepzio orokorra da gutxi entzunak direla haien kezkak eta itxaropenak. Halere, entzuna sentitzeko pertzepzioan ematen dira ezberdintasun estatistiko esanguratsuak hainbat aldagaitan.Internal communication is crucial in successful organizations; indeed, it affects employee motivation, participation, and productivity, among other things. Nevertheless, we must bear in mind that the effective practice of internal communication requires not only informing employees, but also listening to them. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to determine whether employees in cooperatives feel heard. Furthermore, in order to determine whether differences exist, all of these perceptions were examined taking the following variables into consideration: council membership, type of manual labor, work status, and place of work. In addition to a questionnaire completed by 224 employees of a MONDRAGON cooperative a total of 8 semi-structured interviews were also carried out. According to our results, the general perception of the employees is that their concerns and expectations are little heard. However, with respect to the perception of feeling heard, statistically significant differences were found in several variables

Simple voltage balancing method to protect series-connected devices experimentally verified in a 5L-MPC converter

    Get PDF
This paper presents a solution for the voltage balance problem of the series-connected devices that can be applied to multilevel converters in which the series-connected devices need to block twice their switched voltage. The solution is based on two ideas, the control of the switching commands to achieve proper switching losses balance and the use of additional circuitry to achieve proper voltage balance during their blocking state. The proposed strategy is experimentally validated into a 5-level multipoint clamped full-scale converter. However, it can be used in any other converter topology in which the devices need to block twice their switched voltage

Understanding human response to tactile stimuli: A Machine Learning approach

    Get PDF
Whereas understanding human reaction to touch is of great interest in many medical applications, it is still a very unknown field. This research aims to clarify the nature of the relation between endogenous and exogenous attention by analysing electroencephalografic (EEG) data regarding human touch. To this end, data collected from twelve subjects under an experiment based on a variation of the Posner’s cue-target paradigm has been used. After pre-processing, several multi-class classification models based on state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms have been implemented and their accuracy in detecting different experimental conditions have been evaluated. A temporal analysis has also been performed to select the most representative time points. Results showed that although the physical stimuli was identical across conditions, different types of attentional scenarios were classified above chance. Further, the hemisphere contralateral and ipsilateral to the attended side contributed differently, across time, to the accuracy of classification

    Get PDF
In this work, we have applied Optical Digital Interferometry approach to thermogravitational micro-column technique. By the new analysis, we examine the entire height of the micro-column and determine the complete concentration profile inside. The measurements were carried out by two lasers with different wavelength λ = 633nm and λ = 470nm. The system was validated with binary subsystems of the THN-IBB-C12 ternary mixture at equal mass fractions. The results were compared with values of Benchmark Fontainebleau and they showed an excellent agreement

Surface machining condition and fatigue life on Inconel 718

    Get PDF
Life assessment of components working in aero-engines at elevated temperatures is critical. Machining has a serious effect on these nickel-based alloys, for example in turbine discs, affecting their life in service. Machining (turning, broaching…) modifies surface roughness, thickness of the affected substrate layer (including the effect of possible broken carbides) and residual stress distribution near the component surface. On top of that, it is possible to shot-peen or not the component, which again modifies its surface integrity. The aim of this work is to discern among the effect of the different parameter: roughness, damage and residual stresses on fatigue performance and optimum machining conditions
