    The Public Life of Data

This research investigates how people engage with data visualizations when commenting on the social platform Reddit. There has been considerable research on collaborative sensemaking with visualizations and the personal relation of people with data. Yet, little is known about how public audiences without specific expertise and shared incentives openly express their thoughts, feelings, and insights in response to data visualizations. Motivated by the extensive social exchange around visualizations in online communities, this research examines characteristics and motivations of people’s reactions to posts featuring visualizations. Following a Grounded Theory approach, we study 475 reactions from the /r/dataisbeautiful community, identify ten distinguishable reaction types, and consider their contribution to the discourse. A follow-up survey with 168 Reddit users clarified their intentions to react. Our results help understand the role of personal perspectives on data and inform future interfaces that integrate audience reactions into visualizations to foster a public discourse about data

Friend or Foe: A Review and Synthesis of Computational Models of the Identity Labeling Problem

    No full text
We introduce the identity labeling problem – given an individual in a social situation, can we predict what identity(ies) they will be labeled with by someone else? This problem remains a theoretical gap and methodological challenge, evidenced by the fact that models of social-cognition often sidestep the issue by treating identities as already known. We build on insights from existing models to develop a new framework, entitled Latent Cognitive Social Spaces, that can incorporate multiple social cues including sentiment information, socio-demographic characteristics, and institutional associations to estimate the most culturally expected identity. We apply our model to data collected in two vignette experiments, finding that it predicts identity labeling choices of participants with a mean absolute error of 10.9%, a 100% improvement over previous models based on parallel constraint satisfaction and affect control theory

    Knowledge management

Purpose This paper aims to review for the first time existing research literature about the role of gender in creating, sharing and using knowledge in organizations and proposes a conceptual framework to guide future research directions. Design/methodology/approach Based on the systematic literature review method this study collects, synthesizes and analyses articles related to knowledge management (KM) and gender published in online databases by following a pre-defined review protocol. The paper analyses 41 papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Findings The role of gender in KM has been rarely addressed in KM journals and journals with specific emphasis on gender. The existing literature is fragmented, but existing research suggests that knowledge sharing might be influenced by gender. Based on the analysis and synthesis, a conceptual framework is proposed to guide further research on determining if gender matters in KM. Research limitations/implications Academic researchers should aim to include gender-related variables into their KM research to further explore if gender matters in KM. Practical implications The practical implication suggests that managers and knowledge managers should raise awareness about how stereotypes and gendered expectations about role behaviour affect how knowledge and experiences are created and shared within the organization. Social implications The authors believe that a better understanding of knowledge handling and gendered role expectations at the workplace could also have an impact beyond organizational boundaries. Originality/value The paper presents the first comprehensive systematic literature review of the article published on knowledge creation, sharing and usage and gender and provides a conceptual framework for future research

    Design trifft Informationswissenschaft

Teaching the Complexity of Urban Systems with Participatory Social Simulation

    No full text
We describe how we use social simulation as a core method in a new master’s program designed to teach future leaders of urban change to deal with the complexity inherent in current societal transformations. We start by depicting the challenges with regard to cross-disciplinary knowledge integration and overcoming value-based, rigid thinking styles that inevitably arise in the process of solving ecological, technological, or social problems in cities new and old. Next, we describe a course based on urban modeling and participatory approaches, designed to meet those challenges. We reflect on our first experience with this approach and discuss future developments and research needs

Mapping and Visualizing Deep-Learning Urban Beautification

    No full text
Information visualization has great potential to make sense of the increasing amount of data generated by complex machine-learning algorithms. We design a set of visualizations for a new deep-learning algorithm called FaceLift (goodcitylife.org/facelift). This algorithm is able to generate a beautified version of a given urban image (such as from Google Street View), and our visualizations compare pairs of original and beautified images. With those visualizations, we aim at helping practitioners understand what happened during the algorithmic beautification without requiring them to be machine-learning experts. We evaluate the effectiveness of our visualizations to do just that with a survey among practitioners. From the survey results, we derive general design guidelines on how information visualization makes complex machine-learning algorithms more understandable to a general audience

Patientencharakteristika in psychoanalytischen Ausbildungsambulanzen und Praxen

    No full text
It is often assumed that patients of psychoanalytic outpatient centers differ from those of private psychoanalytic practices: outpatients are assumed to be more severely burdened, more frequently impaired in personality organization, less educated and less socially integrated. In the practice study of the German Psychoanalytic Society (DPG-Practice-Study), basic documentation data of 5908 patients were collected in 11 psychoanalytic outpatient centers and in cooperating private psychoanalytic practices. In this article, these patients are described on the basis of sociodemographic and clinically relevant measures, and the two groups are compared. It is shown that the patients in both groups were strongly impaired and in need of treatment; however, there were no substantial differences between patients of psychoanalytic outpatient centers and those of private practices. Therefore, the described assumptions concerning patients of psychoanalytic outpatient centers cannot be confirmed
