Our Symbiotic Life
No full textWe will explore four plausible futures and experiment on a speculative approach to investigate "wicked problems" [14]. Grounded in the field of design fiction, this work combines insights from the climate impact research community, technology meta trends, and plant science, all of which work as a basis for the exploration of relationships between humans, plants, and technology. Based on scenarios from the climate impact research community, we prototyped four plausible worlds and visualized exemplary scenes in the daily life of the plausible citizens. The “PARTHENOS Training Webinar Series”
No full textResearch infrastructures have an ever greater presence in both the Humanities and Cultural Heritage Studies. Scholars and information professionals working in the fields of research libraries, archives, and information play a crucial role as users and providers in cultivating the kind of world-class research that today increasingly relies on the use of these digital research infrastructures. Therefore, their continuous professional development is essential for them to be able to reap the benefits available from the ever-changing field of eHumanities and eHeritage research infrastructures, a mission that is at the heart of the Training team of the Horizon 2020 funded project PARTHENOS (“Pooling Activities, Resources and Tools for Heritage e-Research, Optimization and Synergies”).
This paper describes the “PARTHENOS eHumanities and eHeritage Webinar Series”. These five live and interactive seminars delivered via the internet represent an introductory training programme that focuses on the professional development and capacity building needs and requirements of (digital) humanities and cultural heritage scholars, as well as of information specialists who work for digital humanities and digital heritage infrastructures. Using the PARTHENOS Webinar Series as a case study of the development and delivery of research infrastructure-focussed professional development, the paper outlines the intellectual, educational, and practical context in which the PARTHENOS Webinar Series was conceived, the syllabus used for the initial run of the series, and the analysis of the data collection exercises conducted after the first five webinars, especially the feedback collected from both the trainees and the trainers (online survey and open questions study), and it discusses possibilities for improvement. In the conclusion, the paper places the insights from the PARTHENOS webinars in the context of the potential of webinars for research infrastructure training. It argues that in order to reap their full potential for research infrastructures as training instrument as well as instruments to gain insights in user requirements, new developments, and for community building, further theoretical grounding, professionalization, and on-going analysis of their effectiveness is needed

A primary challenge is not only recommending or retrieving the most relevant items and content, but defining them ad hoc. Other relevant issues include personalizing and adapting the information and the way it is displayed to the user’s current situation and interests. Ubiquitous computing provides new means for capturing user feedback on items and offers information. This year we are particularly interested in contributions investigating how context can influence decision making in contexts such as health, finance, food, education etc. and how systems can exploit context to assert positive behavioral change

No full textIm Land Brandenburg gibt es eine Initiative zur Verbesserung der Beteiligung kleinerer Einrichtungen des kulturellen Erbes an der digitalen Präsentation. Diese gründet sich auf vier Säulen. Die erste ist der kulturspartenübergreifende »Arbeitskreis Brandenburg. digital«, der sich strategischer und konzeptioneller Grundlagenarbeit annimmt. Fachverbände bilden die zweite Säule und entwickeln kooperative Projekte. Größere Institutionen bilden zur Umsetzung der Projekte mit ihrer Kompetenz und Infrastruktur die dritte Säule. Als vierte Säule unterstützt die »Koordinierungsstelle Brandenburg-digital« die Kooperationspartner in Fragen der Planung und Umsetzung der Projekte. Mit Fördermitteln des Ministeriums für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur des Landes Brandenburg werden die Umsetzungen der Projekte und der Betrieb der Koordinierungsstelle ermöglicht
Decontamination and “deconsolidation” of historical wood preservatives and wood consolidants in cultural heritage
No full textIn the past, wood artifacts were treated with a variety of wood preservatives formulated on the basis of inorganic and organic biocides. Most of these biocides have a high human toxic potential and pollute the environment. Some of them even cause damage to the objects they were meant to preserve. This poses a considerable challenge to the handling, exhibition, storage and restoration of such wooden works of art. In addition, biocide-containing structural wood members in historic buildings pollute the indoor-air, and represent a permanent health risk. Wood artifacts previously damaged by organisms and subsequently preserved and consolidated with mixtures of vegetable oils and natural resins now show characteristics of renewed deterioration. An important condition for the re-treatment of such objects is the exact detection of the substances originally utilized for their conservation. Non-destructive and in situ-measurements have priority among the listed analytical methods. The various decontamination procedures currently used are classified in regard to their mode of operation. Preferred methods include mechanical cleaning, thermo desorption, washing with water and detoxicants, and leaching as well as extraction with liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide. The masking with various sealers to prevent biocide evaporation into the indoor-air is limited to application to structural wood members. Leaching of degraded natural consolidants in wood artifacts is currently undertaken in a testing plant

No full textThis paper presents the Digital Hourglass, an alarm clock that focuses on the amount of sleep, rather than wake-up times. It follows a simple approach, lighting one LED for each hour of sleep, and physically resembles the interaction with a conventional hourglass: Tilting the hourglass moves 'time' between its chambers, placing it in an upright position activates it, turning it by 180° snoozes it and placing it horizontally on a surface turns it off

Get PDFUnter dem Dach der Fachhochschule Potsdam sind sehr unterschiedliche wissenschaftliche Disziplinen beheimatet. Einige davon haben auf den ersten Blick scheinbar wenig miteinander zu tun. Nicht nur Gegenstände und Methoden der Lehre und Forschung unterscheiden sich erheblich, sondern auch die Wissenschaftskulturen und Mentalitäten. Dass aber gerade darin auch ein besonders spannendes Potenzial für interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit liegt, soll am Beispiel eines Projektes, in dem die Fachbereiche Informationswissenschaften und Bauingenieurwesen über mehrere Jahre zusammenarbeiteten, aufgezeigt werden. Forschungsobjekt war der umfangreiche und wertvolle historische Bildbestand des ehemaligen Bauunternehmens Philipp Holzmann AG. Beide Fachdisziplinen widmeten sich diesem Gegenstand aus ganz unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln und befruchteten sich gerade dadurch in ihrer Arbeit

No full textDieser Beitrag stellt am Beispiel der ›Universität‹ exemplarisch dar, welche institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen die Digital Humanities brauchen, um Innovationspotenziale freizusetzen und eine tragende Rolle bezüglich der digitalen Transformation der Geisteswissenschaften einzunehmen. Im Mittelpunkt der Ausführungen steht die Betrachtung der Digital Humanities als community-induziertes Phänomen und die sich daraus ergebende wichtige Rolle von Induktion (d. h. von Wegbereiter*innen und Vermittler*innen und Inkubation (d. h. institutionellen Denk- und Begegnungsräumen. Hiervon ausgehend wird ausgelotet, inwieweit diese Betrachtungsweise für andere institutionelle Kontexte fruchtbar gemacht werden kann
