No full textEn la historia del arte, el retrato ha permitido al público asomarse a la identidad de un modelo presentado en múltiples medios por manos de dotados artistas. La historia ha restringido identidades específicas a ser presentadas de una manera particular, con consecuencias para las minorías. Lentamente, han sido manejadas hasta integrar sus narrativas a los derechos alcanzados por la cultura dominante, la visibilidad y la inclusión. El capítulo explora la dialéctica de poder establecida por la digitalización del retrato queer como producto de las industrias creativas. Sostengo que sus identidades han sido empoderadas por los medios digitales debido a su alcance e intimidad y así los retratos sirven a una multitud de propósitos positivos para la comunidad lgbt+, mientras coexisten con la crítica debido a la naturaleza lucrativa de las plataformas digitales

No full textThis study focuses on the norms and values communicated about the use of cannabis in contemporary American TV shows. Traditionally, the eye of the camera has rendered illicit drug use as a private activity by. This dimension of voyeurism (seeing something from an outside perspective which one is not supposed to see) communicates its own normative messages of what is and is not appropriate. However, a key assumption of this project is that presentations of cannabis use in television shows are moving away from this traditional conception, bringing use out of the shadows and into the forefront. Broad City (2014-2019), which features creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, and High Maintenance (2012-2020), by Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, demonstrate a new wave of visualization for cannabis usage that addresses the ambiguity of posmodernism and highlight human relationships regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, and age without bestowing any negative stereotypes. We conclude that these shows demonstrate change both in the depiction of cannabis on television and in setting the standard about how human beings ought to treat each other.Este estudio se centra en las normas y valores comunicados sobre el uso de la cannabis en los programas de televisión estadounidenses contemporáneos. Tradicionalmente, el ojo de la cámara ha representado el consumo de drogas ilícitas como una actividad privada. Esta dimensión del voyeurismo (ver desde una perspectiva externa lo que, se supone, uno no debe ver) comunica sus propios mensajes normativos de lo que es y no apropiado; sin embargo, un supuesto clave de este proyecto es que las presentaciones del consumo de cannabis en dichos programas se están alejando de esta concepción tradicional, sacándolo de las sombras y poniéndolo en primer plano. Broad City (2014-2019), que presenta a los creadores Ilana Glazer y Abbi Jacobson, y High Maintenance (2012-2020), de Ben Sinclair y Katja Blichfeld, representan una nueva ola de visualización de ese consumo desde la ambigüedad del posmodernismo y pone énfasis en las relaciones humanas independientemente del género, la orientación sexual, el origen étnico y la edad sin acudir a estereotipos negativos. The television show recounts a series of adventures and shenanigans between two best friends from Jewish American descent who experience the pains of adulthood in New York City, often laced with a strong dose of cannabis. High Maintenance (2012-2020) is an anthology series that follows The Guy (co-creator Ben Sinclair), a cannabis courier who bikes across New York City delivering his product to a wide range of eclectic clients. The Guy’s adventures focus on the lives of these characters with The Guy appearing only as a spectator who introduces us to their intimate moments. High Maintenance originally aired as a six-episode Vimeo series and was later picked up by hbo for a total of four seasons. The show is acclaimed for exploring what it means to be human. We argue that these shows demonstrate a new wave of visualization for cannabis usage that addresses the ambiguity of posmodernism and highlights human relationships regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, and age without bestowing any negative stereotypes (p. 126)

No full textSin duda los tres textos que a continuación presentamos y que, a su manera, dialogan entre sí de manera enriquecedora -y no tanto o no sólo porque se complementan en más de una ocasión, sino porque también divergen en algunos de sus planteamientos fundamentales- cumplen sobradamente con la misión encomendada de rememorar aspectos nodales de la relación entre México y Canadá, y siempre a partir de visiones particulares críticas e informadas, lo cual resulta en un dossier muy relevante. Aquí quisiéramos agregar que nuestra lectura se centró en el tema de la cultura, cómo se entiende y qué papel se le atribuye según cada trabajo, pues desde nuestra perspectiva éste fue quizá el hilo conductor más relevante entre los tres trabajos (p. 293)

No full textEste texto tiene como objetivo realizar una reflexión sobre los efectos más recientes del conflicto ruso-ucraniano en la región del Medio Oriente. Se parte de un marco interpretativo que ve al orden mundial emergente con múltiples centros de poder (policentrismo) donde algunos tienen más influencia que otros debido al poder económico, geopolítico o simbólico que proyectan. Este contexto internacional tiene una característica nodal que implica un vacío hegemónico, el cual ha desatado una serie de transformaciones en el sistema internacional y ha tenido como resultado múltiples ejemplos de conflicto, pero también otros de cooperación que se estudiarán a lo largo del capítulo.En este ensayo exploré los principales efectos económicos del conflicto ruso-ucraniano en el Medio Oriente, en un contexto caracterizado por un orden mundial policéntrico y con una crisis de hegemonía. Después de subrayar que los países más pobres han sido los más vulnerables a las altas tasas de inflación en combustibles y alimentos, es necesario decir que, paralelamente, las naciones petroleras del Golfo han canalizado a su favor estos mismos factores inflacionarios, particularmente el alto costo de los energéticos, lo que les ha permitido mantenerse como los principales importadores de armamento de los centros de poder mundial más influyentes en el sistema internacional, es decir, Estados Unidos, Europa occidental, Rusia y China.
Viendo este panorama, se debe decir que las crisis de violencia en la región han preocupado a todos los actores involucrados y que, desde marzo de 2023, se dio inicio a una nueva estrategia diplomática por parte de Rusia y China en el Medio Oriente que, entre otras cosas, busca equilibrar el eje diplomático que Estados Unidos lideró con Israel, Marruecos y Baréin a través de los llamados Acuerdos de Abraham. En este sentido, la presencia rusa en Siria desde 2015, así como su rol en la normalización de sus relaciones con Turquía y el mundo árabe, el papel desempeñado por Washington en los acuerdos de normalización entre Israel, los Emiratos Árabes Unidos y Baréin en septiembre de 2020 y el acuerdo estratégico firmado entre China e Irán en agosto de ese mismo año, que ha evolucionado en el reimpulso de relaciones diplomáticas entre Riad y Teherán, son evidencias de que estamos ante una redefinición geopolítica de la región que transita hacia un nuevo equilibrio de poderes y no tanto hacia una transición hegemónica de sustitución de un poder por otro

Wins Prize for Spanish-Language Novel, Joins the Ranks of Immigrant Women Writers / Ávalos, Aldredo; Once upon a Time... Texas before and after.This issue of Voices of Mexico is the culmination of a cooperative relationship that began in 2023 in the framework of the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States. Faced with the idea of border walls or pauses in relations with our neighbors, as members of the university community, we have taken on the task of building bridges of mutual knowledge based on the online cycle “Readings about the United States. Two Centuries of Diplomatic Relations.” The event culminated in the launch of cisan books at the Second Spanish-Language Book Fair, hosted by unam San Antonio in 2023.
In addition, the issue takes a critical look at how cinema has contributed to the collective memory of The Alamo and the way transnational communities give rise to identities of their own, expressed through poetry, prose, and art, which we also show some samples of in this issue
¿Una encrucijada? Repensando el genio culinario, las dinámicas de poder y el impacto de los movimientos sociales en los medios de comunicación gastronómicos y la cultura popular de Estados Unidos
Full text linkEl presente artículo busca ampliar nuestra comprensión de la relevancia política de los medios gastronómicos estadounidenses, así como de las cambiantes dinámicas de autoridad y poder en ese campo. Para ello, se identifica y describe una sensación de fatiga con el paradigma del chef-genio en el periodismo y la cultura popular estadounidenses, la cual se conecta con discusiones más amplias acerca de la sostenibilidad y la justicia en la industria restaurantera. Tras presentar un breve panorama de las condiciones que permitieron el ascenso de los chefs a un estatus eminente, el artículo expone cómo los movimientos sociales que promueven análisis sistémicos del abuso de poder (#MeToo y Black Lives Matter) informan el rechazo actual hacia el chef "tóxico". Las críticas hacia esta figura se concentran en cómo su atractivo cultural ha sido usado para justificar el abuso en el ámbito laboral en nombre de la perfección culinaria. Este argumento se sustenta mediante el comentario de un libro de no ficción sobre los restaurantes después de la pandemia, artículos de opinión, y una serie de televisión, The Bear, todos ellos publicados o emitidos entre 2020 y 2023.This article aims to enrich our understanding of the political significance of U.S. food media and the evolving dynamics of authority and power within this field. It does so by identifying and describing a sense of fatigue with the paradigm of the genius-chef in U.S. journalism and popular culture, which resonates with wider discussions on sustainability and justice in the restaurant industry. After a brief overview of the conditions that enabled the ascent of chefs to eminence, the article elaborates on how social movements that advocate for systemic analyses of abuse of power (#MeToo and Black Lives Matter) inform the current rejection of the "toxic" chef. Critiques of this figure center on how its cultural appeal has been used to rationalize workplace abuse in the name of culinary perfection. This argument is supported by a discussion of various sources that consider recent events and the wider arc of the "rise and fall" of culinary geniuses -opinion articles, a chapter from a non-fiction book on post-pandemic restaurants, and the television series The Bear, all published or aired between 2020 and 2023.The aim of this paper is to enrich our understanding of the political significance of U.S. food media, and the repositioning of authority and power within this field. Post-COVID reflections on food have been characterized by a renewed focus on justice and sustainability, and this analysis aspires to contribute to this ongoing conversation. In order to do this, this article pursues two complementary goals: to present a close analysis of a selection of journalistic texts, published in U.S. media outlets, that evidence a growing discomfort with the notion of a chef whose genius manifests as constant abuse in pursuit of perfection; and to discuss representations in popular culture that accompany this shift and also address the question of what a fair restaurant would look like. The focus is on recent transformations concerning chefs' cultural status and public image, since evaluating the economic consequences of the pandemic on their business endeavors would require different methods (p. 144)

On the one hand, death involves what is fleeting and loss, whereas technology makes possible continuation and permanence.1 In the analogue world, death is an essential part of human beings since it is a universal, biological fact in our cultural system. Sociocultural practices related to death and mourning can change because of historical events. Wars, natural disasters, pandemics, etc., have transformed to a greater or lesser extent the ways we say good-bye to the dead and deal with grief. In addition, technologies such as the printing press, video, photography, the Internet, and the different platforms have improved and diversified our capacity for commemorating them (p. 73)
