Feature selection and molecular classification of cancer phenotypes: a comparative study
Classification of high dimensional gene expression data is key to the development of effective di-agnostic and prognostic tools. Feature selection involves finding the best subset with the highest power in predicting class labels. We here conducted a comparative study focused on different combinations of feature selectors (Chi-Squared, mRMR, Relief-F, Genetic Algorithms) and classi-fication learning algorithms (Random Forests, PLS-DA, SVM, Regularized Logistic/Multinomial Regression, kNN) to identify those with the best predictive capacity. The performance of each combination is evaluated through an empirical study on three benchmark cancer-related micro-array datasets. Our results first suggest that the quality of the data relevant to the target classes is key for the successful classification of cancer phenotypes. We also proved that, for a given classi-fication learning algorithm and dataset, all filters have a similar performance. Interestingly, fil-ters achieve comparable or even better results with respect to the GA-based wrappers, while also being easier to implement and faster. Taken together, our findings suggest that simple, well-established feature selectors in combination with optimized classifiers guarantee good per-formances, with no need for complicated and computationally demanding methodologie
MU-MIMO Wi-Fi beamforming feedback matrices database for radio fingerprinting
This database collects the .pcap files acquired by monitoring a private IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi network operating in multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) mode. The Wi-Fi network consists of one access point (AP) (beamformer) and two stations (STAs) (beamformees). The AP was implemented through a Gateworks GW6200 single board computer (SBC) equipped with a Compex WLE1216v5-23 IEEE 802.11ac module.
Two Netgear Nighthawk X4S AC2600 routers, with 1 or 2 out of 4 antennas enabled, acted as STAs (beamformees). At the AP, 3 antennas were used to sound the channel for downlink (DL) MU-MIMO transmission mode and the STAs were served with 1 or 2 spatial streams each. For the data transmission between the AP and the STAs, we used channel 42, i.e., with carrier frequency of 5.21 GHz and 80 MHz bandwidth. The number of OFDM sub-channels sounded is 234 as the mechanism does not consider the 14 control sub-channels and the 8 pilot ones. The AP uses the quantization parameters 9 and 7 for phi and psi feedback angles, respectively. We generated UDP traffic in the DL direction to induce the AP to trigger the channel sounding mechanism, and collected the angles (phi, psi) that were sent back by the beamformees using the Wireshark network analyzed toolkit running on an off-the-shelf laptop equipped with an IEEE~802.11ac Wi-Fi card. This allows retrieving the beamforming feedback matrices associated with each sounding operation.
Two datasets - namely D1 and D2 - were collected. As for the former, the STAs were deployed at different positions to generate different beam patterns and different SNR regimes. The number of enabled antennas is 2 for each beamformer and each of them is served with 2 spatial streams.
Dataset D2 was collected while the AP was manually moved in the environment. Here, the number of enabled antennas and spatial streams is 1 for the first beamformee and 2 for the second. The datasets were collected in two different indoor environments. For more information about the setup, please, refer to the related publication.

Voice parameters in children with cochlear implants: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ABSTRACT:
Introduction: An intact auditory system is essential for the development and maintenance of voice quality and speech prosody. On the contrary hearing loss affects the adjustments and appropriate use of organs involved in speech and voice production. Spectro-acoustic voice parameters have been valuated in CI users, and the authors of previous systematic reviews on the topic concluded that preliminary Fundamental Frequency seemed the most reliable parameter to evaluate voice alterations in adult CI users. The main aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to clarify the vocal parameters and prosodic alterations of speech in pediatric CI users.
Materials and methods: The protocol of the systematic review was registered on the PROSPERO database International prospective register of systematic reviews. We conducted a search of the English literature published in the period between January 1st 2005 and April 1st 2022 on the Pubmed and Scopus databases. A meta-analysis was conducted to compare the values of voice acoustic parameters in CI users and nonhearing-impaired controls. The analysis was conducted using the standardized mean difference as the outcome measure. A random-effects model was fitted to the data.
Results: A total of 1334 articles were initially evaluated using title and abstract screening. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 20 articles were considered suitable for this review. The age of the cases ranged between 25 to 132 months at examination. The most studied parameters were F0, Jitter, Shimmer and Harmoni Noise Ratio (HNR); other parameters were seldom reported. A total of 11 studies were included in the meta-analysis of F0, with the majority of estimates being positive (75%); the estimated average standardized mean difference based on the random-effects model was 0.3033 (95% CI: 0.0605 to 0.5462; p = 0.0144). For Jitter (0.2229; 95% CI: -0.1862 to 0.7986; p = 0.2229) and shimmer (0.2540; 95% CI: -0.1404 to 0.6485; p = 0.2068) there was a trend toward positive values without reaching statistical significance.
Discussion and conclusions: This meta-analysis confirmed that higher F0 values have been observed in the pediatric population of CI users compared to age-matched normal hearing
volunteers, whereas the parameters of voice noise were not significantly different between cases and controls. Prosodic aspects of language need further investigations. In longitudinal contexts, prolonged auditory experience with CI has brought voice parameters closer to the norm. Following the available evidence, we stress the utility of inclusion of vocal acoustic analysis in the clinical evaluation and follow-up of CI patients to optimize the rehabilitation process of pediatric patients with hearing loss

Dataset for paper "Dogs’ ability to follow the trajectory of temporarily invisible moving objects: ability to track and expect are shaped by experience"
Visually tracking a moving object, even if it becomes temporarily invisible, is an important skill for animals living in complex environments. However, this ability has not been widely explored in dogs. To address this gap of knowledge and understand how experience contributes to such ability, we conducted two experiments using a violation of expectation paradigm. Dogs were shown an animation of a ball moving horizontally across a screen, passing behind an occluder, and reappearing with a timing that was faster, slower or congruent with its initial speed. In the first experiment, dogs (N=15) were exposed to the incongruent conditions without prior experience, while in the second experiment dogs (N=37) were preliminarily exposed to the congruent stimulus. Dogs of the first experiment did not exhibit a surprise effect in response to the incongruent conditions, suggesting they had not formed an expectation about the timing of reappearance. However, their latency to orient towards the reappearing ball depended on the condition, suggesting they were able, to some extent, to visually keep track of the stimulus’ trajectory. Dogs of the second experiment were surprised when the ball stayed behind the occluder longer than expected, but showed no difference in latency to orient across conditions. This suggests they had overcome the visual-tracking mechanism and had formed an expectation about the timing of reappearance. In conclusion, dogs seem to use a low-level mechanism to keep visual track of a temporarily disappearing moving object, but experience is required to make expectation about its trajectory
When a child comes out: factors influencing the experience of a potentially stressful event in Italian parents.
Parents of LGBTQIA+ individuals often report experiencing confusion, stress, grief, and loss after their children come out. The current study explores whether this experience could resemble that of people who have recently lost someone close. This research, then, aims to compare the integration of stressful life events and social meaning-making processes in individuals whose children came out and those dealing with bereavement. Furthermore, it also aims to determine possible correlations between how parents cope with their children coming out and their socio-demographic characteristics and psychological variables. The sample includes 194 parents who experienced their children who completed an online questionnaire. Results show no significant differences between the present sample and the bereaved ones, especially considering parents who experienced their children coming out recently. There also seems to be a significant correlation between lower scores and several socio-demographic and psychological variables, such as advanced age, the gender identity of their child, high levels of alexithymic traits, and more traditional gender role beliefs. These findings show the resemblance between the two experiences and the influencing factors; therefore, they could inform how parents can be assisted in coming to terms with this event
