    ShareTrait : towards interoperable and reusable individual trait-based data in ectotherms

    More and more data on species traits are being collected and made openly available. Despite these efforts, effective syntheses of trait data to comprehend how species respond to and affect their environment are hampered by inadequate standards for publishing the data and the associated metadata, which limits the interoperability and reuse of data across studies. We have developed ShareTrait (https://sharetrait.org/), a novel initiative that consolidates individual-level trait data and associated metadata in an interoperable and reusable format, enabling standardised and integrated use. As a proof-of-concept, we initially focus on three core traits of ectotherms: metabolic rate, development time and fecundity. These traits, measurable in almost all animals, are fundamental to an organism’s overall fitness. ShareTrait enables researchers to share their (meta)data with the research community. To date, researchers from diverse fields have contributed 28,692 individual-level data records to ShareTrait. These records originated from 45 datasets and are just the tip of the iceberg of existing data, highlighting the potential of ShareTrait to be a valuable community resource for meta-analyses and comparative approaches. Future directions of ShareTrait will focus on accumulating more records, expanding to cover more traits, including those measurable at the population level, and partnering with journals in relevant fields (ecology, physiology, evolution) to make sharing standardised trait data part of the standard publication process. We envision ShareTrait, along with its digital infrastructure and comprehensive metadata, to be a catalyst for collating trait data across species. ShareTrait can streamline research efforts, minimise duplication and empower researchers to explore patterns and broader ecological, evolutionary and physiological questions among taxa (e.g. via meta-analyses and comparative approaches). This way, ShareTrait will unlock new frontiers in trait-based approaches, enhancing our understanding of species–environment relationships

    Bottom-up and top-down effects combine to drive predator-prey interactions in a forest biodiversity experiment

    The bottom-up effect of producers and the top-down effect of predators are well-known factors shaping community assembly and ecosystem functioning through trophic interactions. Communities differing in their functional composition may induce ecological effects with varying directions and intensities, but previous studies in highly diverse ecosystems have struggled with reliably quantifying these interactions at the community level. We used spider gut-content metabarcoding in a subtropical tree diversity experiment to examine the impact of multiple diversity components of both trees and spiders on prey diversity and the network structure of predator–prey interactions. Our findings reveal that prey richness and spider-prey network structure are simultaneously driven by the bottom-up effects of tree communities and the top-down effects of the spider communities. When categorized by hunting modes, the drivers of prey richness and network structure differed between spider guilds. Large phylogenetic and functional differences within web-building spider communities promoted coexistence, leading to increases in the utilized prey richness, generality, niche overlap and prey vulnerability. For hunting spiders, the effects of vertical tree structure complexity indicated restricted mobility but facilitated coexistence through increased shelter availability, and a concomitant reduction of prey richness and dietary breadth. Our study underscores the significance of integrating multiple diversity components and considering functional trait composition across trophic levels when analysing the ecological effects of generalist predators. Our findings enable a better understanding of how predator–prey interaction patterns may be altered under current environmental changes that result in biodiversity loss

    Elevated soluble HLA-G levels associate with dengue severity in Vietnamese patients

    The pathogenesis of dengue remains complex and incompletely understood. One proposed mechanism involves the virus evading host immune responses through the upregulation and/or secretion of immune-inhibitory molecules. This study investigates the association between plasma levels of soluble human leukocyte antigen G (sHLA-G), a known immunoregulatory molecule, and dengue severity in hospitalized patients. A total of 238 dengue patients and 118 healthy controls were enrolled. Dengue infection was confirmed by real-time RT-PCR, and patients were clinically categorized as having dengue fever without warning signs (DF), dengue with warning signs (DWS), or severe dengue (SD), according to WHO guidelines. Laboratory parameters were assessed upon hospital admission, and plasma sHLA-G levels were measured using ELISA. sHLA-G levels were significantly elevated in dengue patients compared to healthy controls (median [range]: 42.7 [7.10–1300] U/mL vs. 11.1 [4.7–620] U/mL; p  <  0.001). After adjusting for age, sex and disease severity, a significant association was observed between sHLA-G levels and days of illness (β = 0.1, p = 0.03). Patients requiring close medical monitoring (DWS/SD) showed higher sHLA-G levels (51.0 [7.17–525] U/mL) than those having dengue fever without warning signs (38.0 [7.10–1300] U/mL); p = 0.011. While ALT and AST were positively correlated with sHLA-G levels in all patients, total lymphocyte counts were inversely correlated with sHLA-G in severe cases (r = −0.78, p = 0.002). Elevated sHLA-G levels are associated with dengue severity and may serve as a useful marker for identifying high-risk cases and for guiding clinical monitoring

    Metastatic breast cancer (BC) spread underscores the need for novel prognostic biomarkers. This study investigated CCR4-NOT Transcription Complex Subunit 7 (CNOT7) and leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor-1 (LAIR-1) in BC progression and natural killer (NK) cell resistance. In the current study, 90 female BC patients (46 non-metastatic, 44 metastatic) were analyzed. CNOT7 and LAIR-1 protein levels were measured in serum via ELISA and CNOT7 expression in tissue by immunohistochemistry (IHC). In silico tools explored related pathways. Computational analyses, including in silico bioinformatics and molecular docking, explored gene functions, interactions, and ligand binding to CNOT7 and LAIR-1. CNOT7 serum levels were significantly elevated in metastatic patients (mean 4.710) versus non-metastatic patients (mean 3.229, p < 0.0001). Conversely, LAIR-1 serum levels were significantly lower in metastatic (mean 56.779) versus non-metastatic patients (mean 67.544, p < 0.0001). High CNOT7 was found in 50% (45/90) of cases, correlating with higher tumor grade, hormone receptor negativity, and increased lymph node involvement. Elevated CNOT7 and lower LAIR-1 levels were associated with worse overall survival. Pathway analysis linked CNOT7 to the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Computational findings elucidated CNOT7′s cellular roles, gene/protein interaction networks for LAIR-1/CNOT7, and distinct ligand binding profiles. High CNOT7 levels are associated with advanced BC stages and poor clinical outcomes, which suggests its utility as a prognostic biomarker. The inverse relationship between CNOT7 and LAIR-1 provides mechanistic insights into BC progression and immune evasion, further supported by in silico investigations

    Ziel der Dissertation war es, einen geeigneten Niedertemperatur-SCR-Katalysator für die Biomasseverbrennung zu finden, welcher kostengünstig und umweltfreundlich hergestellt, angewendet und entsorgt werden kann. Mit dem ausgewählten Katalysatorsystem MnOX auf einem SiO2-Träger wurden pulverförmige Katalysatoren hergestellt, wobei folgender Parameter bei der Synthese variiert wurden: Mangan-Vorläufer, SiO2-Träger, Mangan-Beladung, Kalzinierungstemperatur. Die hergestellten Katalysatoren wurden mit folgenden Standardmethoden charakterisiert: ICP-OES,Physisorption, Chemisorption , XRD, TGA. Umsatzmessungen fanden in einem Laborreaktor im Niedertemperaturbereich bis 250°C statt. Um den aktivsten Katalysator zu ermitteln, wurden Temperatur-Umsatzkurven bestimmt. Neben der NOX-Umwandlung wurde auch die Bildung von Lachgas berücksichtigt und die N2-Selektivität der verschiedenen Katalysatoren verglichen
