Effects of deployment stress on families of military personnel: a case study of Kenya troops in Somalia
Determination of errors that compromise the quality of clinical chemistry laboratory service delivery at Kenyatta National Hospital
The study established the level of pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical errors found in
the analysis of Clinical Chemistry Laboratory specimen at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya.
This study adopted a descriptive survey design as the main approach and targeted 346 sampled
specimens and request forms received. All the laboratory request forms, specimens/samples and
dispatch of results were scrutinized and errors documented as per the different variables in the
different phases, over a period of three months in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. The study
aimed at establishing the levels of laboratory errors in all the phases. Results of the study showed
that Preanalytical errors were most common with a frequency of 148(42.8%), statistically
significant (P < 0.0001),followed by analytical errors 114 (32.9%), statistically significant
difference (Chi-square, 155.5; df, 1; P < 0.0001), and post analytical errors 84 (24.3%), There
was a statistically significant difference (Chi-square, 198.4; df, 1; P < 0.0001) . Preanalytical
errors found included request forms lacking address, tests not done in clinical chemistry
laboratory, specimen drawn in wrong tube and specimen without request forms , while analytical
errors found include reagent out of stock , inadequate sample during test runs , haemolyzed
samples and double registration of specimen, and lastly is the post analytical errors found the
following uncollected results, critical values not communicated results lost and unreviewed
results. Clinical Laboratory error reduction, prevention and high quality laboratory service
delivery requires team work, involving collaboration, coordination and effective communication
among all health care workers. The study concludes that the development and adherence to
standard operating procedures will minimize this errors, forecasting of reagents and critical
results to be communicated immediately to the respective clinics or ward Team leaders for
prompt action, the study also recommends that there is need for routine, schedule Clinical
laboratory audits and implementation of Laboratory information system towards quality
laboratory service delivery

Immunotherapeutic treatment of HIV-1: review of safety and efficacy
Background: For over two decades, the treatment of HIV-1 patients has relied on antiretroviral (ART). These drugs have had a great deal of achievement in not only controlling the viral load but also partly reconstituting the immune system in HIV-1 infected persons. However, the misfortune is that ART is a lifelong treatment because it cannot achieve complete eradication of HIV-1 virus, yet with its side effects like many other drugs. Scientists have hence introduced immunotherapy in an effort toward complete eradication of HIV-1 in HIV/AIDS patients.
Objective: The aim of this paper was to determine the effectiveness and safety of the various immunotherapy formats used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection.
Method: We reviewed a number of peer-reviewed published articles to determine the effectiveness and safety of the different immunotherapy formats tested in randomized clinical trials and animal model experiments.
Results: Majority of immunotherapy regimens used in combination with ART to treat HIV-1 positive human or animals were found to be effective in boosting the cell-mediated immune responses in HIV-1 infection but achieved insignificant results in controlling the viral load in these experiments. Most of the immunotherapy formats were also well tolerated recording minimal to no adverse effects on HIV-1 patients.
Conclusion: Most immunotherapy agents are relatively effective and safe when used in combination with ART in modulating immune response to HIV-1. These immunotherapy agents do not significantly reduce the viral load and hence cannot eliminate HIV-1

An investigation on causes of low transition of girls from primary to secondary school in Kaasala location, Ikutha sub-county
Studies in Kenya and elsewhere have shown that generally there is low transition rate of
girls from primary to secondary schools especially in arid and semi arid areas.Kasaala location
lies in the arid and semi arid class according to government geographical data available. studies
have also shown that areas with few economic activities, low or no rainfall are more affected
by this trend of low transition rate of girls from primary to secondary school . Most residents
of Kasaala location are poor owing to lack of enough rain.Many are times when crops
have failed to produce due to inadequate necessary water for growth of plants. The purpose of
the study was to investigate causes of low transition rate of girls from primary to secondary
school. The specific objectives of the study was to find out the role of parental attitude,
parental level of education, cultural beliefs and the distance from home to the nearest school on
low transition of girls from primary to secondary school. The cost of secondary education and
teacher characteristics also contribute to the low transition rate of girls form primary to
secondary school. The study adopted the ex post facto research design that assisted the
researcher to show how the above factors explain the low transition rate of girls from primary
to secondary school. The target population of this study included the standard seven and eight
pupils and their head teachers, secondary school students and their principals in Kassala
location. Through purposive sampling technique at least 20% of public primary and
secondary schools were selected . The students and pupils for study were selected by
random sampling .The head teachers and principals were purposively sampled . The main
instrument of data collection was a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as frequency
distribution , percentages, means and standard deviations was calculated and data presented in
form of tables, graphs and charts. The data was analyzed using computer programming. The
descriptive and inferential statistics was used to analyze the data disaggregated by gender. The
data which was collected was recorded in tables. The tables contained columns for category
of questions which showed the respondents answers . The tables
