Understanding the emotions of visitors to Chernobyl.
"Few studies have focused on the case of Chernobyl as a dark tourism site.The conceptualization of dark tourism still needs to be broadened and is nowadaysshifting towards a focus on the experience rather than the sites. This chapter investi-gates the emotions elicited by the Chernobyl tourist experience by studying Chernobylvisitors’ internet publications (blogs). Data were collected from popular travel blogsites, which include online posts about Chernobyl and its visitors’ emotions. Five emo-tions were deduced from the blogs, including surprise/amazement, awe, fear/appre-hension, interest/anticipation, and disgust. Additionally, this chapter also shows thatboth tangible and intangible attributes of the experience could trigger these emotions.The study offers implications for enhancing tourists’ experience at Chernobyl whichcould be adopted for other dark destinations
Conceptualizing meaningful experiences.
Despite increased interest in experience and experience design in hospitality, tourism, and leisure, the field remains emergent. For experience design to mature in research and practice, clear consensus conceptualization of key constructs, like memorable, meaningful, and transformative experiences, is needed. While existing research identifies emotions as the key to memorable experiences, more conceptual work is needed to understand the unique impact and process behind meaningful experiences. This paper proposes an expanded conceptualization of the impact and process associated with meaningful experiences. We suggest that as individuals reflect on existing experiential (i.e., autobiographical) memories, they can extract insight from those memories. If any of the extracted insights connect with core sources of meaning, then the individuals perceive their experience as meaningful. Suggestions for potential strategies to design for meaningful experiences are also shared.</p
Enhancing the experience? Exploring the impact of augmented reality on staged performances.
Extended Reality technologies, such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (AR), have been increasingly used in the domains of leisure and events. The rapid integration of these technologies raises questions on their use for enhancing staged performances. In this study, employing a between-participants experimental design, we measured the impact of AR on the experience of watching a live dance performance at a staged performance venue, and its recorded version viewed in a home-like environment. Two professional dancers choreographed and performed a 9-minute contemporary dance piece, which was subsequently augmented with computer-generated AR content. We measured participants’ emotions using physiological (skin conductance) signals, and self-reports assessing overall evaluation and willingness to recommend the performance. Results indicate that the live performance was experienced more positively than the at-home experience, regardless of AR. Physiological data showed a subtle yet positive impact of AR on participants’ emotional engagement during the live performances, but not in the at-home setting. Surprisingly, self-report data revealed that watching the performance without AR was evaluated more positively than watching it with AR. This study suggests that AR has the potential to positively impact staged performance experiences, but only when its content is coherently integrated with the performance.</p
