Civic Identity of Ethnic Minorities in Lithuania and its Manifestation in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

    No full text
Due to the ongoing processes of economic, cultural and social integration, most countries are finding it increasingly difficult to preserve their uniqueness. Consequences of globalisation had prompted many countries to make an effort in conserving their national and foster their civic identities. More and more attention is being given to issues regarding the preservation of national identity and ethnicity, and the nurturing of national self-awareness. All of these issues are especially relevant in small and multicultural states, which are finding it exceedingly difficult to find appropriate models and methods of fostering their statehood, while also taking into account the needs of their ethnic minorities, cultivating a civic society, and protecting the singularity of cultural and ethnic minorities. This is especially relevant to Lithuania, as the rate of emigration remains high, with the place of émigrés being slowly replaced by representatives of other ethnic groups and cultures. Regardless of the various measures applied during attempts at the liberalisation of policies regarding ethnic minorities, non-integrated representatives of such minority groups can become a factor of not only national, but also of international instability

    No full text
Recent processes of globalization have determined the rise of migration all over the world: migration flows, their trends and scope have changed. Multiculturalism and migration is one of the most contentious political issues of our time. By considering migration from a National security perspective, the paper reviews the Great Britain’s policy approach, together with the approaches adopted by the Europe Union as well. According to numerous statistical data, many European countries face the ever-growing extent of international migration, including irregular migration. These spreading in-flows of immigrants have a strong impact on the social and political climate of host countries, which are often challenged by the growing number of immigrants and, thus, should review their immigration politics to match them to contemporary processes of globalization. It is important to investigate the contemporary trends in world migration and to discuss current changes in the social situation and immigration politics in Great Britain. The aim of the research is to survey and to determine the prevailing immigration in-flows and tendencies to the Great Britain, as the one of the most prominent immigration destinations in Europe, focusing on the multicultural impact of these flows on the influence on the national security. The paper concludes that while migration is certainly a security concern, the Great Britain has come a long way in a short period in developing and implementing initiatives to secure the borders to exclude those who would seek to do harm to the country. While the position on identifying, and removing those who should not be in the country is improving, more work is needed in this domain. The research results demonstrate that increased in-flows of immigration to the Great Britain hasn’t degrade a crime domain itself and worsen the national security situation of the country
