A new methodology for incorporating weathering products into analyses of prehistoric pictorial matter: A case study at the Rocher Du Château schematic rock art site

    No full text
International audienceComparisons of prehistoric pictorial matter and colouring matter can provide information about the chronology of rock art and the provenience of the materials used. However, characterizing pictorial matter is difficult because samples generally contain fragments of substrate and overlying weathering products, as well as pictorial matter. Studies of pictorial matter have long taken account of the substrate, but attempts to isolate weathering products are much more recent. The current article describes a methodology for doing this and its application to the Rocher du Château schematic rock art site. This site in Savoie, France, is one of only a few such sites whose archaeological layers contain colouring matter (possibly dated to 4,600 – 4,000 BC) that is potentially the same as the rock art pictorial matter and close to a potential source of colouring matter. Our aim was to ascertain whether the archaeological colouring matter was related to the rock art pictorial matter and to identify its source. Results showed that the phosphorus in the Rocher du Château’s paintings came from runoff water and that the whewellite, weddellite and calcite in the surface crusts are linked to the presence of mosses/lichens. In addition, the pigment minerals in the pictorial matter samples were of hydrothermal origin, as were the minerals in the colouring matter from the archaeological layers. Although, we were unable to determine whether the colouring matter is identical to the pictorial matter used to make the paintings, our results highlight the need to consider weathering products when analyzing pictorial matter

This work is part of the SLAM-B project which aims to design and evaluate the bioeconomy trajectories of territories towards carbon neutrality. This report summarises the work carried out to set up a geographical information system enabling the creation of datasets necessary for the STICS crop model's simulation at European level with fine resolution.

This dissertation examines the mental health of French firefighters, a profession characterized by high levels of stress and an elevated risk of burnout. The study had a dual objective: first, to provide reliable data on the prevalence of burnout; and second, to assess the effectiveness of a non-pharmacological intervention. Our national survey conducted among 3,038 firefighters revealed that 11.4% were at moderate risk and 7.8% at very high risk, thereby underscoring a clear need for preventive strategies. Then, an experimental study was implemented in a sample of forty firefighters exhibiting moderate to high levels of burnout. Participants were assigned either to a control group or to a multifunctional physical activity group that received a seven-week training program consisting of two 60-minute sessions per week. Assessments—particularly those using the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT)—demonstrated a significant reduction in burnout scores among participants in the physical activity group. This benefit was maintained one month after the end of our intervention. No significant changes were observed in the control group. However, the program did not produce notable effects on self-esteem, psychological distress, or coping strategies. In conclusion, this study confirms that burnout is a significant issue among French firefighters and that physical activity constitutes an effective and promising preventive strategy. Further research in larger samples is required to validate these findings and to encourage the integration of such interventions into occupational health policies within fire and rescue services.

    No full text

Analysis of a non-LTE hypersonic spectrum of methane between 5880 and 6220 cm−1

    No full text
International audienceThe SMAUG device is used to thermally populate the vibrational states of the methane molecule and depopulate its rotational states through its supersonic expansion in argon. The methane molecule is probed during expansion by cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS) between 5880 and 6220 cm−1. The laser beam passes through both the isentropic core of the flow, characterized by a very low rotational temperature of 40.4 ± 0.8 K, and the hotter boundary layers surrounding it, which are characterized by an average rotational temperature of 364.3 ± 7.7 K. Analysis of the spectrum reveals that the vibrational population does not follow a Boltzmann distribution. A special procedure is developed to assign an effective vibrational temperature to each vibrational state, ranging from 532.4 ± 32.2 to 1112.0 ± 81.7 K for molecules in the isentropic core, and from 811.6 ± 43.1 to 851.8 ± 45.6 K for those in the shear layer. Only the first vibrational states of each methane polyad remain significantly populated leading to detectable transitions. A total of 2347 transitions from the cold gas of the isentropic core and from the warmer gas of the boundary layers are assigned from a new ab initio effective model and 749 are confirmed by lower state combination differences (LSCD). Among these transitions, 694 originates from cold bands and 1653 from hot bands starting from vibrational states ν4, ν2 (dyad), 2ν4 (pentad) and 3ν4 (octad)

Soil smoldering in temperate forests: a neglected contributor to fire carbon emissions revealed by atmospheric mixing ratios

    No full text
International audienceAbstract. Fire is regarded as an essential climate variable, emitting greenhouse gases in the combustion process. Current global assessments of fire emissions traditionally rely on coarse remotely sensed burned-area data, along with biome-specific combustion completeness and emission factors (EFs). However, large uncertainties persist regarding burned areas, biomass affected, and emission factors. Recent increases in resolution have improved previous estimates of burned areas and aboveground biomass while increasing the information content used to derive emission factors, complemented by airborne sensors deployed in the tropics. To date, temperate forests, characterized by a lower fire incidence and stricter aerial surveillance restrictions near wildfires, have received less attention. In this study, we leveraged the distinctive fire season of 2022, which impacted western European temperate forests, to investigate fire emissions monitored by the atmospheric tower network. We examined the role of soil smoldering combustion responsible for higher carbon emissions, locally reported by firefighters but not accounted for in temperate fire emission budgets. We assessed the CO/CO2 ratio released by major fires in the Mediterranean, Atlantic pine, and Atlantic temperate forests of France. Our findings revealed low modified combustion efficiency (MCE) for the two Atlantic temperate regions, supporting the assumption of heavy smoldering combustion. This type of combustion was associated with specific fire characteristics, such as long-lasting thermal fire signals, and affected ecosystems encompassing needle leaf species, peatlands, and superficial lignite deposits in the soils. Thanks to high-resolution data (approximately 10 m) on burned areas, tree biomass, peatlands, and soil organic matter (SOM), we proposed a revised combustion emission framework consistent with the observed MCEs. Our estimates revealed that 6.15 Mt CO2 (±2.65) was emitted, with belowground stock accounting for 51.75 % (±16.05). Additionally, we calculated a total emission of 1.14 Mt CO (±0.61), with 84.85 % (±3.75) originating from belowground combustion. As a result, the carbon emissions from the 2022 fires in France amounted to 7.95 MtCO2-eq (±3.62). These values exceed by 2-fold the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) estimates for the country, reaching 4.18 MtCO2-eq (CO and CO2). Fires represent 1.97 % (±0.89) of the country's annual carbon footprint, corresponding to a reduction of 30 % in the forest carbon sink this year. Consequently, we conclude that current European fire emission estimates should be revised to account for soil combustion in temperate forests. We also recommend the use of atmospheric mixing ratios as an effective monitoring system of prolonged soil fires that have the potential to re-ignite in the following weeks

A scattering operator for some nonlinear elliptic equations

    No full text
International audienceWe consider non linear elliptic equations of the form Δu=f(u,u)\Delta u = f(u,\nabla u) for suitable analytic nonlinearity ff, in the vinicity of infinity in Rd\mathbb{R}^d, that is on the complement of a compact set.We show that there is a \emph{one-to-one correspondence} between the non linear solution uu defined there, and the linear solution uLu_L to the Laplace equation, such that, in an adequate space, uuL0u - u_L\to 0 as x+|x|\to +\infty. This is a kind of scattering operator. Our results apply in particular for the energy critical and supercritical pure power elliptic equation and for the 2d (energy critical) harmonic maps and the HH-system. Similar results are derived for solution defined on the neighborhood of a point in Rd\mathbb{R}^d. The proofs are based on a conformal change of variables, and studied as an evolution equation (with the radial direction playing the role of time) in spaces with analytic regularity on spheres (the directions orthogonal to the radial direction)
